The monarchy seems a non-issue too me

  • they are net positive for the UK economy
  • they are a not insignificant employer
  • they impact the lives of very few in a negative way as far as I can tell (now, not in the past)
  • all this grandeur and ceremony people seem to loathe is just tradition, it forms part of the tourist draw, despite being out of touch to many locals
  • as much as any hereditary stuff stinks, but doesn’t really hurt anyone (now, not in the past)
  • if you abolished the monarchy (there is a process) we would be even more America-lite

There are far better things to express idealistic ire over

I would quite like to see a Republic of England one day but English republicanism feels like a lot of politics in this country - boring, unimaginative and slightly puritan. There are republics like France or Italy that still do ceremony and tradition very well. A lot of republicanism here (not all, I accept) seems to be very little more than finding those ceremonial and traditional aspects of the monarchy weird or cringy, or wanting to spend the money instead on "our NHS". In that case I'd probably rather stick with a royal coronation than some kind of soulless London-2012 celebration of our 'modern, diverse' country, which I have no doubt a presidential inauguration in this country would be.

Imagine there will be 'space' for such a conversation when the commonwealth fades away, that being quite a close thing I think now that Charles is king

Its the polices job to allow people to peacefully protest not clamp down on it.

But they did allow people to protest.

There were a few "not my king" placards near Downing Street, and quite a few near Admiralty Arch.

I assume the police arrested the others, as they were planning some form of actual disruption.  And as the police had politely but firmly pointed out, the threshold of tolerance was going to be very low.

When you've got lots of VIPs and 1000's of people to keep safe from potential terrorists, you're not going to tolerate a bunch of idiots making a nuisance of themselves.

By and large, i thought it was an excellent day for democracy.   99.99% of the crowd turned up to show support, and 0.01% had their peaceful protest to say they disagreed with the whole event.   Good natured i think, and an acceptance of freedom of speech.

"An excellent day for democracy...and acceptance of freedom of speech"  in that the people who's view you support were permitted to do as they pleased, whilst those you disagree with, and who were protesting peacefully, were arrested?  Interesting slant on freedom and democracy there :S.

Yes but what about the idiots making a nuisance of themselves when there’s VIPs around!? 😂

Agree protesting should be allowed, and I do not know quite what went on - but when does disruption become too disruptive?  :dunno:

No it’s not, the police’s job is to try to prevent trouble in the first place.

That is the same thing in this circumstance. It isn't to arrest people who havent done anything wrong. I'm yet to see any evidence there was any trouble; the only trouble is forcing people to spend a night in the cells for no reason.

What does it make me if I’ve not watched a minute of this, but I also think scouse booing the national anthem is outrageous? I look forward to hearing about their collective productive day at work tomorrow.

Mostly just a miserable group seeking attention. Me, me, look at me.

Looking forward to the end of the Tory scum mantra when the opposition get elected. Will we hear Labour scum when they realise they are just the same with different faces?

English not scouse, he is your King, like it or not. Suck it up.

I really tried to watch this but gave up due the religiosity of the ceremony. As an atheist this really made me want to gag. I have always been undecided regarding the monarchy but the sooner the church vanishes the better. This coronation should have been a secular event thus appealing to all.

I think there should and is healthy debate about pro and anti monarchy views. I think protests and marches against the monarchy should take place but not at the coronation when the people attending wish to celebrate etc without confrontation. I suspect the anti lobby just wanted to spoil the spectacle

Suspect this is true at least in part, but at the same time, best time to protest and get it in the public eye. If there is enough public feeling it would come to a head, so democracy (or apathy disguised as it) can speak in voices we may not personally relate too.

If we were a republic, we would have to elect a president as a head of state (with no powers) to represent the U.K. on the international stage at many public events

you’d expect that to be a political figure of some description…… given the quality of politician we’ve seen over the years, i reckon we’re better off with Charles and then William !

president Blair? President Hague ?  President brown.?  President ashdown ?   Heaven forbid ….. president Johnson !

sometimes pragmatism works ……..

I think in Italy parliament chooses an elder statesman of politics, which seems quite sensible. Hague wouldn't be a bad choice to be honest. I suppose you could argue we have our own version of that where the monarch rules with the tacit approval of parliament.

Having said that, getting the UK parliament to decide on an ex politician to be head of state would probably be a car crash.
