Rumours that Leicester is to play host to BBC Radio 2 Live this year have been confirmed. The licence for a two-day festival in the city’s Victoria Park was approved last week and the hosts of the event revealed.

BBC Radio 2 Live was set to be held in Leeds last year, but the event was cancelled following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Prior to Covid, it was held yearly in Hyde Park, featuring artists such as Elton John, Blondie, Take That, Kylie Minogue, Pet Shop Boys and Rod Stewart.

The Leicester event is set to take place on Saturday, September 16 and Sunday, September 17 with some 34,500 general tickets and 2,000 enhanced tickets to be made available. City mayor Sir Peter Soulsby said he was really looking forward to the festival.

“I’m obviously very pleased that we’re going to have this major event in Victoria Park,” he told LeicestershireLive. “This is a major boost to the area, to the businesses in the area and to economy of the city more generally.

“We’ve had big events in the park in the past. We had Kasabian there and we celebrated, although it’s painful to remember it now, the football club’s Premier League victory. The park does work for those big events.”

“I’m genuinely really looking forward to it,” he added. “These sorts of events are always a good boost to the city, it brings people together in enjoyment and celebration. What better thing to celebrate than music?”

The event will have two stages, with around eight artists a day on the main stage, performing a range of music including mainstream pop, country, folk, jazz, soul, rock 'n' roll, gospel and blues. The second stage would feature DJs playing a range of popular music. There would also be a funfair, bars selling alcohol and food stands.

Some concerns had been raised by residents in relation to noise, anti-social behaviour, parking and general disruption. Sir Peter said Leicester City Council will be working closely with the Festival Republic, who put forward the licensing application, to make sure disruption is kept to a minimum. The organisers have also agreed to a number of conditions to that end.

“We’re going to have to take steps to make sure people fully enjoy it and also that any disruption will be kept to a minimum. We want to make sure obviously that the event goes well, but also the set up and the break down.

“People are bound to be concerned about the disruption and it’s important that we do our very best to work with the organisers to minimise that and to maximise people’s opportunity to enjoy what will be a really great occasion.”

When asked who he wants to see play the festival, he simply said he was probably not of the right generation to judge who should fill the programme. The BBC has been contacted by LeicestershireLive for comment.

Get the zimmers out!!!

In fairness I am sure there is something decent amongst that list, TFF was my 2nd ever gig at De Mont in 82 & saw Chic in Birmingham 4 or 5 years ago.

Live music, just good to be there.

Can't wait to watch everyone get ripped off with the ticket prices and spend all day standing around in the pissing rain drinking £8 cans of red stripe.

That was my opinion of festivals until i went to one, I loved it, but got lucky got great views and great weather too.

Used to love going to festivals as a young man but I can't get past the obscene prices for just about everything on offer. If there isn't a fence you can climb over to get in and someone wearing a tie dye shirt selling drugs i'm not interested.

I take it you have a tie dye shirt?

I remember going to One Big Sunday in 2001 on Vicky Park.

It was free. Just turned up with a bag of beers and what not.

Got very silly and saw Kylie, Coldplay, Faithless and a load more.

Remember it being a really fun day out and there being no trouble.

Everyone booing Victoria Beckham was a highlight.
