Covered literally everywhere down the left wing for Middlesbrough last season as he picked up 11 assists Would be interesting because he'd basically be doing the defensive winger job, which we currently seem to have outsourced to the right. But then this puts us in an interesting spot with our LBs... We can't play all of Giles, VK, Doyle, Thomas regularly on that left side, or can we? Edited 19 July 2023 by MadsEmil
lcfcsnow Posted 19 July 2023 Posted 19 July 2023 48 apps 0 goals last season. We've got to target wingers with some kind of goal threat considering we've lost Tielemans, Maddison and Barnes

StanSP Posted 19 July 2023 Posted 19 July 2023 So will we play him as a LB or LWB or LW? Good that he seems to have some versatility.

My initial thought is that he'd play the role Castagne had v Northampton on the right - which in turn means we'd put someone more attacking on that side instead
Gerard Posted 19 July 2023 Posted 19 July 2023 According to whoscored he played 32 games at left back and 13 games as defensive midfielder left last season. Seems a strange signing considering we have Thomas, JJ, Kristiansen and maybe even Castagne who can play there next season. Any reason why we're targeting him for a position that he doesn't appear to be a massive upgrade on what we have and a position we're well stocked in.
Ric Flair Posted 19 July 2023 Posted 19 July 2023 If we are going to play wing backs then players of his profile are exactly what we need. Is he also able to play as a winger, no idea it would appear he hasn't done in the past but perhaps Maresca thinks he has the flexibility to convert him to a winger. I do wonder what becomes of Kristiansen though, just get the feeling he's not that well regarded. 1

We seem to leave no stone unturned in making sure our signings aren't in positions it seems we are obviously weak in.
moore_94 Posted 19 July 2023 Posted 19 July 2023 Wouldn't surprise me if Enzo thought he could player further forward as more of an actual winger going off what he was like with Middlesbrough last season 2

Either this signing would mean a change in system to what we're expecting or Giles won't compete with those others for a place, he'll literally be playing on the left wing. I don't have a problem with that as long as we sign a left footed right winger who will be more of a goal threat. I actually think it's quite beneficial to have two wingers of the same footedness, don't think having a slight asymmetrical approach is all that terrible, having one wide player more comfortable setting them up and another finishing them isn't an issue. Especially given we're likely to have Vardy and Daka down the middle. Not everyone can be looking to score, there's got to be creators. So the team is starting to take shape isn't it. Something like: 5
Popular Post Ric Flair Posted 19 July 2023 Popular Post Posted 19 July 2023 He's played about 30 times at left or right wing and pretty good end product creatively. £5m seems very tempting. And worst case scenario is we know he is a lethal wingback if we have to revert to that system. I'm coming round to this. 8

Actually that's interesting then. Because maybe if Ricardo isn't fit we flip the shape, Giles DOES play at left back and he's the one that pushes in to the midfield to partner Winks. Because, lets be honest, VK and JJ aren't really quite "centre midfielder" material. 5

Could be wanting him to play a similar role to Ricky on the right hand side and come in and join the play in the middle.

Bale started as a left back. 1

Watching that video of him, he's relentless. I've no issue with us playing wing backs if we have proper wingback and he's one of them. Imagine 3-4-3 with him at LWB and then a winger ahead of him. Nah he wasn't actually defensive mid It is just WhoScored's weird way of saying he was left wing back 1
