Jon the Hat Posted 4 July 2023 Posted 4 July 2023 We should be matching their offer and wages. Lets see if Burnley are really paying more than us... Will he really want to play for Burnley? Prem yes, but I would be quite a drop in training facilities, probably even from Bolton.

It is odd that despite good performances they are replacing him within one year of joining, looks like their #2 is also leaving. They have also signed the Orient keeper this summer already.
RowlattsFox Posted 4 July 2023 Posted 4 July 2023 English football is madness. Yet equally it could still be a bargain if they sell him on to the big boys in a could of years. Not seen if Man City have a buy back clause.

Sounds like Man City have everything as part of the deal….. Burnley in advanced talks with Man City over £19m deal for goalkeeper Trafford Burnley are in advanced talks with Manchester Cityover a deal for goalkeeper James Trafford, who is currently on England U21 duty. It is understood the deal could be worth up to £19m, with an initial payment of £15m plus £4m in add-ons. The deal also includes a 20 per cent profit sell-on clause, a buy-back clause and a matching offer clause. The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at League One side Bolton.

This is probably the situation with the Southampton purchases last summer (although little was leaked about the terms of those deals) 1

What's a "matching offer clause"? Not heard of that before.

That's that then. £19m seems a lot for an unproven keeper. 1

Matching clause would be if someone offers say 20m and Burnley were to accept it Man City will have the option to match that bid. Guess if Burnley were to be relegated but Trafford has a great season that clause could come into play. 1

I wasn’t sure to be fair but can see @goose2010 has clarified! I just read the piece I had quoted and it really read as Man City having covered all their bases.

It shows why we weren’t really in with a chance on a permanent deal. For what it’s worth, I think the player himself is a bit silly this season to sign a permanent deal anywhere. Having played in League 1 and only being 20 which is practically a toddler in GK terms, surely being first choice at a Championship club pushing at the top would have been better for his development.
Muzzy_no7 Posted 4 July 2023 Posted 4 July 2023 With Burnley going after Trafford, would Muric then be available?

Finnegan Posted 4 July 2023 Posted 4 July 2023 So it turns out Man City like their long serving title winning club captain more than the coach that was there for a bit. Booo. Can Burnley just hurry up and finish raiding Man City u23s then so we can go take the leftovers.

The buy hack clauses are usually 2-3 times the fee they sold them for in case they are proper mustard. That said, there are still some bargains to be had from their academy but its getting them when their contracts are running down and they want to leave. Alex Robertson for example looks ideal and his contract is up. Bobb and Borges likely to cost £8-12m each, so more than likely loans if we go for them. Although sell Barnes for £40m and both of those would be exciting punts. Given the FFP troubles they're in, how much money they've seen Chelsea make from academy players and the sting of losing the likes of Sancho for free it can hardly be surprising. Anyone thinking we were going to raid Man City for 500k a pop like Pearson and Walsh did to United for our last Championship title push was probably being drastically naive. 1

Zorrovolpe Posted 4 July 2023 Posted 4 July 2023 Not sure that Trafford - at this early stage of his career - is what we would have needed. Recently he was at Accrington on loan; he certainly had presence and attitude in spades, and thought he should have been automatic first choice. But he lost his place because of inconsistency and the loan was not renewed. A bit of a risk for a Premier League / upper Championship side to be starting him, I would say.
