Neither him nor Soumare are defensive midfielders. So what does Winks offer?  He can pass.  Soumare can carry.  Neither are much of a threat at the business end of the pitch so take your pick on which one misses out.  But for who?  Cos Wilf is the only DM we've got and he's not played as a proper DM since we last went down.

The only way you help Winks is to give him a partner that does the dirty work.  Someone physical who puts in tackles, breaks up play, intercepts and wins duels.  But then why would you pair that player with Winks?

Unbelievable to think he's played in a Champions League final. Weak, not creative, not athletic, doesn't score or assist, can't tackle.

£8mil pounds for a player who cant cut it at PL level by the way. He's also considered as one of our good transfers in recent years...

I quite rightly pointed out last week it would be Winks who would likely be dropped when Ndidi returned or at the very least the one to rotate first. Never been a huge fan of Winks, he's too weak. Has the odd dominant performance but at this level and in this ailing side he's nondescript.

He receives and passes, moves, then receives and passes, and he's good at that, and knowing what's around him, but I think you need more than that in the PL as a midfielder. You need strength, to be able to tackle and win your duels, to dribble with the ball, to score some goals. You don't need all those qualities, but at least 1 or 2 of those on top of what he already does

Tbf £8m is good value for what he did last year and if we keep him next.

8m is nothing these days. Half a Maddison. Fifth of a Tielemans. Less than Cannon.

Not really, £8mil should be able to get you PL quality. 

 

For comparison Leeds signed Ao Tanaka for €4mil who has the same quality as Winks on the ball whilst also not being shit defensively.

Winks is not half the player that Maddison is or was for us. There are also plenty of midfielders that can both hold onto the ball and win the ball back that you can get for less than £8mil.

 

Buying a player for £8mil who is only good in possession and offers very little at this level is definitely an overpay.

Infuriating player. Can be a tidy passer of the ball and can make the team tick when he wants to, but that's been few and far between recently. He was hiding on the pitch today, as he has done many games this season. Not up for the fight whatsoever 😡

Hi. Spurs fan here. I watch the Leicester games and have to say Winks just jigs around and watches every game without much involvement.  A complte waste of a team pick, like at Spurs. Just as well start with 10 men.

Hes a fraud of a player. At least Skipp will try every game, a much better player than Winks.

again.. we knew what we were buying with winks.. decent for the championship where he could run games with very little pressure from the opposition..

off the ball we knew he was weak and offers no screen to the defence..

 

As we knew he would, He gets found out now in the PL..

 Tidy on the ball but isn’t good defensively, has no engine, can’t tackle. No defence splitting no balls etc etc

Winks and Skipp are Spurs rejects from the worst Spurs side in 30 years. We paid decent money for the privilege of having them with us.

He's always been pathetic playing against Everton. A while back I saw a highlights of him at Spurs playing a game against Everton. He was getting knocked of the ball every time he had it, his tackles were just laughable and his passes were all back passes because he didn't know what to do.

Winks worked well last year moving the ball from defence to midfield in a system that he had the ball and needed to keep it ticking around.

Hamza with one of them would at least have made some tackles, might not have lasted 90+ mins though

I agree, thats why I removed Winks and Soumare and had Skipp in there.
