Thought he was decent to be fair - those accurate passes out from the back are something only Vestergaard does well in our defence.

I think against more dynamic forwards he’ll struggle.  Would be ok in a three where he has plenty of cover

Against more dynamic forwards all our defence will struggle. Credit where its due, those passes are quality.

100% he’s our best passer

But he showed today that he’s defensively limited in a two

Any more so than we've seen from anyone else in our backline? Faes and Okoli as a partnership have shipped loads too.

Made 1 howler in the first half where they missed a good chance at the back stick, but much better with him in the side. Actually played a few passes that broke lines and in the main defended pretty well. Certainly an upgrade on the other centre halves we have.

Three at the back gotta be realistic for some games

Sit Vesty in front of Fae and Okoli?

Given the frailty we seem to be constantly having at fullback, it's got to be a possibility.  The trouble is, in a fight for survival, where do you test it?

Gotta be a low block game and play on the break

Vesty is actually an 'attacking' selection..since he starts our moves.

On a other note, did anyone see where he was on pitch for the winner? Love it!

Defence looks more controlled especially on the ball with him playing. Ipswich didn't really threaten us with counters which is obviously his downfall.

Should start next game though I think

We just look more composed and dangerous building from the back with Vesty out there. Maybe not the best option when we'll have 30% of the ball but against our rivals in the bottom half, a must-start for me.

At Old Trafford is potentially the best place to try it, we’re not expecting to get anything, but if it comes off they are weak enough that we could steal a point or maybe more.

The winner?

Did I miss something?

I agree and also taking into account that bar International duty, he hasn't played at all and needed to get back into the swing of the Premiership.

Thought the same when watching back, brave decision that paid off!

Felt more comfortable with him at the back, should keep his place

On the ball sure, but I can't say I felt comfortable when the ball was coming towards our area

I know we've seen in the past his 'running at full pelt' is giraffe in treacle stuff, but 3 or 4 times yesterday he just stood stock still and left an Ipswich player to retrieve a ball in yards of space, when from the original pass it had looked like he could have fairly easily challenged for the ball.

Perhaps it's this is his equivalent of a keeper punching instead of catching, whereby he doesn't risk a 'go and miss' but prefers to cede possession but be 'set' to defend. And perhaps like punching instead of catching it will take me some time to get used to it, cos yesterday it freaked me out.

There’s no question we look way better in possession with Vesty on the pitch. He also gives us another option on set pieces, which we’re going to need to keep being efficient on in order to succeed.

I still think the best move with him is using him selectively. Against teams where we figure to have a decent amount of the ball, he starts. Against the top six or eight clubs use him as a bench option if we’re (inevitably) trailing late. The notion of using him in a three or as a CDM against those sides is an interesting one but it’d be a big gamble, and there’s no evidence Cooper is inclined to set us up that way.

I'm not against it per sé, when you have solid defenders who back their own ability you can allow it.

Morgan and Huth's league-winning partnership was exactly that - though it helped that they had Simmo rarely venturing forwards, to provide a third body where needed.

Vesty is not on that level, but there's definitely method in the madness - set yourself up, win the ball back and use your passing range to start our own attack. Give him a run in the team and I can see our overall play improving if he's allowed to play the quarterback role (i cringed typing that last bit - with apologies to @foxile5).
