Massive red flag on Marti starting him. 
 

Winning the ball back and then just leaving it to someone else says it all, honking regardless of the level.

He is genuinely that bad it’s hard to describe, just lazily running the ball out for a corner early in the game sums him up.

Be nice to see Page play against Huddersfield in the role.  See how he does.

There’s a huge amount of recorded evidence out there from last season. 
are the analysts scared to call this out in fear of exposing yet another disasterclass signing from the recruitment team?

Has King got no voice to say this guy is no use to us?

To be fair that was against a Fiorentina XI mainly made up of ressies and kids who are a week or two behind in pre season.

True.  Just saying it was evident that he would start with something resembling that side.  The only changes were Mads for Jakub and Hamza for JJ.

That incident yesterday really summed up his lack of mental toughness or game intelligence. He got forced back in possession by the press - all the way to the goal line. Now it's no exaggeration to say that I myself (aged 66) could have won us a goal kick from there. Smack the ball  against the opponent's shins, jump out of the way of the rebound and off we go. Another option - to whack the ball out and concede a throw in. Instead he just watches, seemingly hypnotised, as the ball trickles out off his foot for a corner. He really is useless..

He’s never really been deployed how he should be here. 
 

His best form for Lille came when Benjamin Andre was the deeper midfielder being the aggressive ball winner. Soumare didn’t have as much defensive responsibility in that system, and was allowed to progress the ball through his dribbling or short passing. 
 

We saw under Rodgers he’s not a 6 and in Cifuentes system he seems to be the player he wants there. I’d rather have Winks in that role, problem is then a duo of Soumare and Winks has very, very little defensive quality.

Isn't this how Ruud was playing him when it was Soumare and Ndidi in the Pivot?

Soumare spends his time on the shoulder of his opponent when we are in possession (never really making the effort to receive the ball, other than to wall-pass it back to the CB’s) and then he’s 5yds behind his opponent when we’re out of possession! Their goal yesterday epitomised his lack of commitment.

 

Winks has to start & a Winks & Skipp pairing would be better IMO. Replace Skipp with Ricardo when fully fit.

You’ve inadvertently summed up our signings since Fofana.

 

We make zero sense with our signings, take Fofana as an example, a young, extremely athletic CB, pairing him with Evans made complete sense.

 

We sell him and replace him with a downgrade of Cags.

 

Last season, we have to sell KDH as we’re run by two cast from The Muppets, what does he leave behind? 
 

An athletic box to box CM, who started making a niche for himself with late runs into the box and scoring quite a few goals.

 

What do we replace him with? Skipp, a CM with no endearing qualities and definitely not the ability to get you goals from deep.

 

How can our recruitment not only be so bad, but so short sighted.

Are we still using his one half decent season in France to justify his performances in the year 2025?

 

I thought this breed or person had died out.

Marti gets a pass from me for starting (and persisting with) Soumare on Sunday. He is far from the first manager to be gaslit into believing he's a competent footballer. And he's barely had a fortnight of actual pre-season to see him in games, thanks to our board's inaction.

 

If the lazy lump is still here and playing week-in week-out by the end of September while Choudhury is sat on the bench, that's when I'll get angry.
