Just got back from the game, was extremely animated at the end and had to be consoled by a lot of the players, clearly pissed off that he was brought on for 2 mins, I really hate what cooper is doing to this team.

He is destroying the morale of this team. To not play him for more than 2 bloody minutes is inexcusable

He should be starting games but today he should’ve been on as soon as we got it back to 1-1. I absolutely hate this manager

Not to mention he comes on for Mavididi, they both need to be our wingers, Ayew could be good for those teams where we need to do damage limitation, but for the likes of Everton, Fatawu and Mavididi need to start

No mention from Cooper that it could be Ayew who could drop out

I really do hate that it seemingly can only be one of Mavididi or Fatawu starting

Mavididi playing well should have no influence on whether Fatawu starts or not

https://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/steve-cooper-responds-abdul-fatawu-9624847#comments-wrapper

Last season’s regular wide-men have not started together so far this Premier League season, with Fatawu in the line-up for the first three games, and with Mavididi in the 11 for the four matches since. Cooper’s preference for a winger who can double up as an attacking midfielder has seen Facundo Buonanotte, Jordan Ayew, or Bobby De Cordova-Reid occupy the other wide spot.

While City supporters questioned Mavididi’sabsence in the opening weeks of the campaign, there are now calls for Fatawu to earn his place back, with fans keen for last season’s wide duo to play at the same time. Fatawu has been brought on in every game he’s been a substitute, but he has been used sparingly in recent weeks, coming in added time against Everton and Arsenal, and playing the final 10 minutes or so against Bournemouth.

For Cooper, Fatawu’s omission is a normal part of having a competitive squad. It’s not the case that the Ghanaian is doing anything wrong, more so that Mavididi has been in good form.

“That question could be for anybody who doesn’t start,” Cooper said last week, before City’s win over Bournemouth. “We have a squad. Everybody’s working hard. We have a team that will start and players that will finish.

“Three or four games ago, it was Stephy. Now it’s Abdul. It could be Kasey (McAteer). It’s a normal question to ask, I understand that. But the question should really be about Stephy and not Abdul. Next week will be somebody else.

“What I do know is that we have a group that are really working hard in training, fighting for the shirt. Some guys deserve more opportunities than they’ve been given but we’ve got the numbers that we’ve got.

“We’re trying to manage all that in a positive way. The guys are doing that, they’re putting the team first. We will continue with that regardless of anything else.

“Abdul’s a really good young player, really exciting, a good attitude, a nice kid, and he’s got a really bright future in front of him. Getting to the player he wants and will become, there will be spells like he had last year in the Championship where he did really well, and he’s also going to have spells where he needs to come through. It’s normal.”

I recall hearing from forest fans that he only plays one winger never 2

I may be burned at the stake for saying this but if he insists on Ayew playing put him upfront , why doesn't he try facundo in the CAM, Mav and Fatawu on the wings

Absolutely. Giving teams like that problems to navigate on the left, right and centre is potentially game changing. Instead, the opposition knew that if they could just stop the threat from the left, they were free to pour forward at will!

What exactly is a 'ground duel'

Opta: A duel is an 1v1 contest between two players of opposing sides in the match. For every Duel Won there is a corresponding Duel Lost depending on the outcome of the contest.

I would love to see these 33 duels he's won.

I don't think he's had 33 touches of the ball.

Fatawu has only played 277 minutes so he's winning a ground duel every 8 minutes. He's 9 behind Adama Traore having played less than half the minutes (556).

He's a special player and only our manager can't see it.

He's also behind Ayew who has only played 90 minutes more. Does that mean Ayew is almost special?

Tbf all of Ayew's ground fuels won are where he's fallen over and won a foul - assuming that counts as winning the duel.

In fairness, I don't think even his harshest critics on here deny that Ayew is a pretty good defensive winger.

The problem we have is that he's a dreadful attacking winger and that Mavididi and Fatawu are both significantly better than him in possession whilst also being very good defensive contributors themselves, making Ayew largely redundant even in games where we're the perceived underdog.

Looking into it, Ayew has been more efficient at take on this season 1.67 successful take ons p90 at a 53% success rate vs Fatawu's 2.26 at 26.9%.

It's the tackling where the discrepancy comes from. Fatawu is on 3.87 tackles won per 90, Ayew at 0.95. It's from a small sample size so it's definitely skewed but 3.87 tackles won is nuts. He's 17th in the entire league and he's played 3.1 nineties

Not far enough into the season for Fbref to do it annoyingly

That’s all well and good. But what’s the comparison on premier league experience. That’s the database our Steve uses. None of this progressive carries nonsense
