I think most of Northern Europe is at the very least on a par, Canada, New Zealand... We clearly don't stand head and shoulders above anyone else. Canada, Oz, NZ, all of Scandinavia, Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Chile... That's off the top of my head in terms of places that could claim to be more tolerant and accepting than the UK. This also does highlight that being a "larger nation" (often) goes hand in hand with abusing that power, whether at home, abroad, or both. Just now, Jon the Hat said: Hmm. Germany which gave 20% of the vote to AfD? France with La Pen? Are you sure? We'll have to see what share of the vote Reform get next time round to be sure of comparisons there, I think. They're polling at over 20% themselves.
Jon the Hat Posted 28 May 2025 Posted 28 May 2025 Yeah I think it is easy to say from afar, but all those countries have their issues, and many have been a lot more resistant to migration that the UK has. Australia for a start is definitely not more open minded than the UK. Not even close.

However, going back to the original point, I think Farage was speaking in general terms, unless I'm mistaken about the context. That's a rather different matter, IMO.

Reasonably clear example of tech being patently unready to anticipate all the situations a human can and is needed to. Wonder if it's cost them more money in terms of implementing the tech and through losses from shoplifting etc than it's saved them in terms of staff reduction. Edited 28 May 2025 by leicsmac

I thought all self checkouts worked on weight - if you put something in the packing area that hasn’t been scanned then the machine won’t allow you to continue?

I feel that the Australian treatment of native Australians disqualifies them from such a list. 3

What nation do you think beats us here? There were attempted pogroms of asylum seekers last summer in England. 2

It won’t. I work in retail and people will come in, fill baskets and walk out the entrance/exit/fire escape. When the prices keep increasing in daily life and people’s pockets keep emptying it’s little surprise the market for stolen items continues to grow with the police not bothered about it. 1

I think overall the bolded is the main thing that needs to be emphasised to Farage and those who pay too much heed to him. 1

Don't forget, the shareholders and creditors are not the same people. 1

The creditors will have to take a bath in that case the govt would not buy any commitment on the debt. But in a transparent administration other buyers may emerge who are prepared to pay more for the assets. Also, govt have to be careful because if they overtly screw over shareholders then it becomes harder to sell any national assets in the future. 1

Popular Post leicsmac Posted 28 May 2025 Popular Post Posted 28 May 2025 https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ckg41g1140po Prosecutors in the UK have confirmed for the first time they have authorised 21 charges against Andrew and Tristan Tate, including rape, actual bodily harm and human trafficking. The Crown Prosecution Service said that it had authorised the charges against the brothers before an extradition warrant was issued in 2024 to bring them back from Romania. The two British-Americans are under investigation in Romania, facing a number of charges, which they deny - and the CPS said "the domestic criminal matters in Romania must be settled first." The CPS's charging decision came after it received a file of evidence from Bedfordshire Police about allegations made in the UK. The CPS said Andrew Tate, a 38-year-old influencer and former kickboxer, faces 10 charges connected to three alleged victims, including rape, actual bodily harm, human trafficking and controlling prostitution for gain. Tristan Tate, 36, faces 11 charges connected to one alleged victim, including rape, actual bodily harm and human trafficking. Hopefully, at some point, these two will see the inside of a jail cell. For a long time. 8

People simply don't put stuff they're stealing in the bagging area. They either hide it on their person or just walk straight out as @Durnerz has said. Physical security manning on the door is pretty useless too. Our local Morrison's has put barriers at the exit from the self checkouts that only open "once payment has been made". How does it know? I had hoped that the rapid disclosure from the police about the ethnicity age and sex of the driver would prevent scenes that followed the attack on the dance class. It seems it has,. But still, thick people with little intellect or intelligence or any nod towards the facts, swarm through social media like a plague of bloodsucking cockroaches.

Trump lashed out at the reporter. “Don’t ever say what you said. That’s a nasty question,” Trump said. “To me, that’s the nastiest question.”
