A rather darkly fascinating look at how misinformation is causing issues in yet another place.

I’m increasingly of the opinion that the only way to stop this is the regulation of the internet. I don’t know exactly what that looks like but it’s having a malign influence on society.

Maybe one for the Unpopular Opinions thread.

I've actually put something like this in that thread before now. It goes against every feeling I have regarding humans and freedom of expression, but given the damage it's already caused and the potential for damage in the future, I honestly feel there may come a point where the choice is between that and serious social unrest, perhaps total collapse.

But you know the thing that really causes the paranoia wheels to turn? The idea that this unrest through this method is being formented for this exact purpose; create enough disruption, make it truly look like the only choice is the one above, and even smart and aware people might want to exchange their freedom for security.

This might be one of the most gargantuan psyops ever launched. I truly, truly hope that I'm wrong about that thought and such regulation would be necessary, rather than just playing into the hands of the powerful, though.

Hahah

Side note, I have much love for Americans who are good people and love us like brothers/cousins.  I know you are one of them (as are the others who post on here from the states).

Always welcome here in Canada as long as it's a visit and you go back home lol

Imagine what it would bel like though if it was regulated by Trump and his ilk. Once regulated who can guarantee it's safe management?

White House national security adviser Mike Waltz says Ukraine needs to "tone down" its criticism of the US and sign a minerals deal being pushed by President Trump

White House National Security Adviser Michael Waltz says Ukraine needs to rein in its criticism of the US, as Washington tries to secure a peace deal to end the war.

"It's unacceptable, they [Ukraine] need to tone it down and take a hard look and sign that deal," he tells Fox News. The deal he is referring to is a push by Donald Trump for access to rare minerals in Ukraine in return for aid, or even as compensation for the support the US has already provided.

"We presented the Ukrainians really an incredible, and a historic opportunity," the adviser says, adding that it would be "sustainable" and "the best" security guarantee they could hope for.

Zelensky has publicly rejected an American bid to gain access to – and profit from - Ukrainian minerals, saying: "I can't sell our state."

But he says that the two countries can reconcile its differences.

Seems pretty reasonable to me. Would be a shame if the minerals fell into the hands of other interested parties.

UK and Norway reinforce joint defence against Russiapublished at 13:49

We've just seen a joint statement between the UK and Norway, where both nations have expressed their "ironclad" and "unwavering" support for Ukraine and pledged to enhance their own defence.

The countries say they are committing to enhancing their "critical undersea infrastructure" as "Russia's aggression across Europe" continues "growing".

They also say they will increase intelligence co-operation and enhance co-operation in the High North and North Atlantic - as sea is where the UK and Norway share "the closest bonds".

"We recognise that Russia is willing to use all means at its disposal to undermine European cohesion and support to Ukraine," the statement reads.

For context, the UK and Norway describe themselves as "the closest of Allies", with a "deep history", having a "common outlook", and "commitment to democracy".

Both countries will use the coming months to work towards a new defence agreement, hoping to sign it by the summer.

I think there’s much to be said for throwing our lot in with Scandinavia. I see them as more reliable than a lot of continental Europe.

A sovereign European nation having its land forcibly taken by a dictatorship then betrayed by the most powerful country in the world to have their natural resources plundered by the two seems pretty unreasonable to me.

When was the World ever fair?! That's why I am an art history lover, and not a history buff.

Never.

But thankfully people with empathy have worked hard to make it at least a bit fairer.

And, hopefully, will continue to do so in spite of the social Darwinists trying to set the clock back.

"There is no justice. There is just us."

(And, lest anyone think this purely moral stance, a fairer world is a longer lasting one from a practical standpoint, too.)

Absolutely. If we resign ourselves to thinking that fairness and justice is unnattainable, then we might as well pack up and accept the worst of human nature.

Where it's been said before that progress is neither automatic nor inevitible, it seems quite relevant when you consider the recent actions of the US administration. Whilst I can appreciate some subjectivity, it's pretty maddening to consider capitulating to the whims of this fantasising bullshit artist.

Should also be considered that unchecked aggression has led to some pretty dark chapters in history.

Donald Trump Hospitalized After Collapsing Gullet Incident Involving Vladimir Putin

MAR-A-LAGO, FL — US President Donald Trump was rushed to the hospital Thursday evening after what medical professionals are calling an “extreme and unprecedented gullet collapse,” reportedly sustained during a private meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Sources close to the scene claim the incident occurred in Trump’s opulent Mar-a-Lago estate, where the president had invited Putin for what was officially described as a “strategy session on global leadership.” Eyewitnesses, however, say that Trump was seen engaging in a frenzied display of what one aide called “aggressive throat diplomacy.”

“We knew he had a strong affinity for Putin, but none of us expected it to reach this level of esophageal peril,” said one staffer, speaking under the condition of anonymity. “One second, he was ranting about NATO and election fraud, the next—boom—he’s on the floor clutching his throat like a fish gasping for air.”

Doctors at Palm Beach General confirmed that Trump suffered from a “catastrophic structural failure of the pharynx,” a condition rarely seen outside of competitive hot dog eating. Specialists were reportedly baffled by the sheer magnitude of the injury, with one surgeon remarking, “I’ve never seen anything like it, and I worked the Nathan’s contest for ten years.”

The Kremlin has denied involvement, stating in an official release that “President Putin only engages in mutual diplomatic endeavors based on trust, respect, and the appropriate level of submission.”

Trump’s campaign has attempted to downplay the incident, initially blaming a “deep state medical conspiracy” before pivoting to claims that the president was simply “so strong and patriotic” that his body temporarily gave out from the sheer force of his dedication to international relations.

Meanwhile, as news of the hospitalization spread, Trump’s most ardent supporters took to Truth Social, hailing him as a “warrior who sacrificed his throat for America.” Some QAnon adherents even suggested that the collapse was a sign of his intense commitment to the presidency, claiming, “The esophagus had to fall so the Republic could rise.”

At press time, Trump was reportedly stable, though still unable to speak, a development that many across the political spectrum have tentatively labeled “an unexpected national blessing.”

I can understand why people might think that the problem is "not their fight" or "too big" for them or whatever, but I would also ask those who think that way not to get in the way of people willing, able and trying to make the world and future a better place.

And yes, the idea of unchecked aggression and "Might Makes Right" that people like Trump embody has led to some dark chapters in history and, if not addressed, will in all likelihood lead to some darker ones in the future. Possibly to a degree never seen or even envisioned before.

Every time I see some news online it just trumps mental cabinet members talking nonsense about either getting Canada to be apart of them , blaming Ukraine for Russia’s attacking  them . Lying about Zelenskyy not going to speak to them though there is pictures of him there or some other shite. They are all a bunch of horrible lying c**** and it’s only 30 days in

All things considered, I’m still surprised that they didn’t allow Gaetz through. There are some morals in there somewhere even if they’re shrivelled up and stuffed in a cardboard box under the stairs.

As they move further and further beyond the pale, I'm inclined to think that whatever stopped Gaetz from being confirmed was either something that would have made him a massive liability to the leadership (enough that it would threaten the whole thing), or something truly, incredibly dreadful, or both.

I can't honestly see the moral compass of these people extending beyond that.

I note they’re openly talking about Trump running for a third term at this CPAC conference.

Bannon and Trump both floating it… be in no doubt, changing the constitution and removing the two term limit is definitely on the agenda.

Meanwhile Elon’s having a quiet day, calling astronauts retarded…

and weilding a chainsaw at CPAC - a perfectly normal thing to do!

There were also some interesting tweets from Grimes pleading for Elon to get in touch about a medical matter for one of his children - that have since disappeared!
