He reported back to training last week.

But he's not in Austria,.right?

At the most, he'd have done his tests and five days fitness work before flying out to camp.

If he's training with the u/16s (about his weight and strength level) atm, that's a very heartening sign

can someone explain the two gaems in one day malarkey

half of the squad (I assume the first XI and a few of the better bench players) will play Köln and the fringe players will play against Karpaty

I think Evans needs replacing with Aluko on that list. Evans is clearly talented but I don’t think he’s ready yet.

Aluko is a defender. I was talking about midfielders and wingers who will get chances across 4 attacking positions.

Aluko should also get chances but we currently have 5 full backs and 6 CBs not including him. Jayden Joseph also looks capable.

From the friendly the other day I'd say we looked fitter than we have done in previous pre seasons. There were a couple of occasions we lost the ball and the whole team immediately triggered into a really strong recovery run. Do get though that we changed the full XI so there isn't an excuse to not be fresh but it's a decent sign.

Punished myself by watching some of the Lens friendly back from last summer and we looked like we'd spent 4 weeks at the buffet.

I don't read too much into friendly performances generally but the Lens performance was so drastically bad that you couldn't ignore it. A week before the new season and we served that up - I was about 90% sure we'd go down after watching that. About as dreadful a 90 minutes as I've seen from a supposedly professional outfit.

Not from what I’ve seen. As far as I’m aware they fly back Friday night/Saturday morning so highly doubt he will attend.

Yup, we need a GK coach!

Harsh, keepers really didn’t have much chance from where they were shooting from (and which is the point of the drill, so the players have prior muscle memory in those positions to combat the added pressure they’ll be under in a real match).

What Faes on the wing whipping in crosses?

Jake Evans loves that finish across the keeper quite high towards top corner doesn’t he.

Reminds me of Barnes honing a craft over a year or two of the side foot low finish. Seemed to practice and practice it for ages and eventually became lethal at it.

If you can be bothered to browse the match thread for the Lens friendly, it's there for all to see. The general consensus was that we were utterly abject, devoid of any kind of identity or plan, unfit and unmotivated. It was the performance of a team whose relationship with a new manager had already broken down beyond repair. The loss of Maresca and the decision to replace him with Cooper meant our season was over before it had begun. We were never going to recover from that.

I had fears for Lens the fact they only managed to win 3-0. As it turned out they didn't have a great season.

We've done it many many times, particularly under pearson.

None of the four goalkeepers on display there were Mads. Wonder if the West Ham move is progressing?

Anyone else gathering their squad?

I've never bought two different squads playing two games on the same day as it doesn't help new players gel with the rest of the squad, but I guess that doesn't apply to us.

Translation - "we have not sold anywhere near enough tickets to make it viable so we are asking people with tickets to bring as many people as possible. See that bloke across the street? Yeah, bring him!"

I’m not sure the new players bit applies to us either lol

It’s a good point. I think it might make sense at the start of preseason, I.e to get everyone minutes. A couple of weeks to the first competitive game, I agree you’d want to see the squad together and gelling.
