Supermarkets were selling England flags etc. Nobody was buying them.

No little flags on cars either.

Because it's a different demographic what follow it.

I saw a metro article saying if the game mattered the pubs would have been full and everyone would have been half cut by lunch time. Well it's just a difference audience what's why and it's all the better for it. It's a new culture and different from the culture whereby mens football stems from.

Reports the German games in Switzerland weren't particularly fun as the German ultra groups have started to lurk around while they had nothing else to go to.

Define "enough"? Pretty sure it's increasingly becoming more and more profitable, hence the massive influx of interest, advertising, attendances, exposure, etc? Nothing happens in football if it isn't making the rich men at the top money and they're lapping it up at the moment.

Not sure who needs to hear this still but women's football doesn't need those blokes in the pub.

Conversely, there are plenty of women and girls that have never attended a men's football match in their lives but have tuned in to watch the Lionesses or the WSL. They don't have to be appealing to exactly the same audience.

I mean it can't have escaped the attention of anyone who has watched even 30 seconds of womens football that the crowds are made up of a much different demographic. Shit, just close your eyes and listen to the cheer - or scream - when a goal is scored.

Finners get it. I don't think I have two more contrasting atmospheres in the same stadium as England women and watching Leicester City play there.

Another thing that was positive throughout the tournament is the players not surrounding the ref or waving the imaginary yellow card.

And no frequent spitting, either.

I love the honesty in the women's game but was surprised with how the traditional Italian tactics surfaced during the second half of the semi-final. Perhaps because they have a male coach, don't know, or it's in their DNA.

I hope the woman's game isn't ultimately ruined like the mens when the money starts pouring in.

every time I watch England I'm amazed by how much they kick and stamp on the opposition. "In their DNA" I guess...

Sounds like something has upset you. I'm hoping that you are able to celebrate the Lionesses amazing performances and the pride that it's brought.

Proper ENGLAND!!!!

Listen I'm made up that the English have finally found a way to express their national pride in a PC way, we were all getting worried about you there for a while.

Who's 'we'? The English have always had a deep national pride. Unfortunately there are some which attempt to deny it and struggle to accept.

She sort of got overshadowed because of the result but what a player Aitana Bonmati is.

Some of those little intrinsic moves and passes were near impossible to defend. Best female player of all time for me and someone skill wise young female players can emulate

When I watch her play, I can't imagine that she's not better than all of our current midfielders at Notts lol

She’s very classy isn’t she. Some of the runs she makes are fantastic.

I would be very surprised if more cynicism does not appear. Signs are there as you said with Italy and even Spain

It kind of already is ruined. Certainly at club level anyway, with the same clubs dominating financially and hoarding all the talent.

I don't want to derail the thread but from the outside I don't think the English resemble a people with deep national pride, not any more. They like to compare themselves favourably to other countries, but that's not the same as national pride.

I don't know where the outside is that you're looking in from but perhaps in that place some may struggle to understand England or find it difficult to accept the English having as much pride as any other country. I don't know.

I live here but I spent much of my adult life in other countries. Maybe I'm just mixing in the wrong circles but I think national pride is seen in a much more negative way here than in other countries. Which is why I think people have gone crazy for the Lionesses because it gives them a vehicle for a lot of emotions they usually feel the need to suppress.

I think there's some truth in that (suppression) but English pride is still there as much as anywhere else if you scratch the surface. It doesnt take much to bring it out.

I prefer they cant kick as hard which shouldnt be an issue really when youre up against a smaller goalkeeper in a full size goal.

All top level female players will have been playing since they were little girls so perhaps there is this stubborn belief the girls will always lack power so concentrate on coaching technique??

Power is not essential to score a penalty.

But what is key in penalty taking is being able to strike the ball where you want it to go.

So in the case of the missed penalties we’ve been seeing - by and large these will be strikes that didn’t fully go where the taker intended (too close to the keeper or missed the target altogether) and that’s what I mean by a ‘technique fail.’

comes in handy if the penalty is a poorly placed one and you're up against a female goalkeeper:brendan:

Difference between England women and men going into a major tournament

Women: Give 110% and nothing less, go into a tournament to win it! Will play injured if must, playing for my country is their dream, proud English women and play for the shirt.

Men: Turn up give 70% and wanting to avoid injury so can be available for club side for pre season, if we get knocked out early means got time to head to Dubai for a week or two....

When listen to ex players interviews years later, the common theme for a player instead of talking about a certain moment in there career it'll be all about the night get drunk in a pre-season tour.

Both teams have been in the last four Euro finals.

I think sporting success is a major way for people to express pride.  Look at the turn out for the 2012 Olympics. Generally the British and the English in particular do not feel the need on a daily basis to bang on about national pride. Call it laid back or a natural lack of showing off. Football and all the major sports mean large crowds of like minded people gather together in a way the normally reserved public don't usually do. Before the 2012 games there was a lot of moaning before (very UK Trait that) that it would be crap and goodness knows what the opening ceremony would be and probably rubbish when in fact it was marvellous.
