On penalties, I think I'm right in saying this tournament is very much an outlier and generally penalty conversion rate isn't much, if any, lower in women's football than it is in men's. I guess there could be any number of reasons why - there is obviously a lot more attention and thus pressure on these games than there used to be and it might be a self-fulfilling thing across the tournament where once a few get missed a sort of collective panic sets in.

The thing I find interesting is I can't remember seeing any players watching the keeper and waiting for them to commit which almost seems the default technique now in the men's game for any regular takers. I'd be interested if anyone knows why that is because it seems like goalkeeping has evidently come on such a long way and maybe as a consequence penalty techniques have been left behind a bit.

Okay so hate probably was, I just mean in terms of this “quality” keep being brought up. It’s like well done ladies but it’s not as good as the men. I’m not aiming this at you by the way, because you’ve just asked a question. But I think we need to collectively accept the women’s game and the men’s game are each unique in their own rights. There should be no need to compare, but celebrate each equally.

Appreciate the reply

I wasn’t even directly comparing it the man’s game, as you mention there has been plenty of rank shoot outs over the years with them involved.

Just from a basic way of thinking with the women being smaller in filling the goal, I’m surprised more don’t go for the corner.

But yep a penalty scored in a shoot out is a good penalty, think we can all agree on that

What has happened to england and penalties, we never seem to lose now.

Can't quite believe we've won it, I guess our name really was on the trophy.

Not until the engraver does his work.

Buzzing for carter as well after what she has been through to play like that after coming back into the team today is amazing. I didn’t think it was a good idea after her last performance for her to start but she proved me and I am sure a lot of other people  wrong.

Massive credit to Jess Carter as well, thought she was very good after a horror tournament.

she played really well, especially knowing that any mistake would see her torn to shreds on social media

Agree. Very composed and looked to be in control. She looked like the senior centre half next to Williamson who I lose count at the amount of times she kicked the ball out of play.

Lauren Hemp was class again, always goes under the radar but I thought she was superb.

England's women make us proud.

England's men make us frustrated.

Just celebrate what the women have achieved!

Congrats to the ladies! Impressive win more for the character they've shown when going behind each time in the tournament, and having strong squad depth to call upon!

I think I'm right in saying we've won the last 4 penalty shootouts in major competitions.

Men 2024 euro's v Switzerland

Women 2023 world cup  v Nigeria

               2025 euro's v spain & sweden

Could add the womens victory in the Finalissima v Brazil too.

Have you ever taken a penalty after 120 minutes?

It’s not easy - and neither is saving them (that tended to be my role).

BUT - I think the other thing you need to be clear on is that you are comparing the women to the elite men’s game; whether your conscience of it or not.

If we then consider the two, the men’s game has developed and been professional over many more years, has had billions more spent on it and generates its players from a much wider base pool.

The women’s game is developing from a much smaller participation base and has only become professional inside the last 20 years or so - therefore, anyone expecting the same level of technical quality is showing a lack of serious objectivity.

If you therefore accept that on a technical level, the women’s game will be behind the men’s game on the most part - it shouldn’t be a surprise that there are more ‘technique fails’ in a penalty shootout after an extended period of physical exertion - given that’s the point technique is tested the most.
