Shame for him. He had quite an extensive spell out during the loan at Oxford as well. Probably one who is just destined to not stay injury free for long.

Shouldn’t trigger a new contract though.

From a team perspective, I’m not convinced he’d have been a starter anyway if Faes, Souttar and Okoli stayed around. Probably doesn’t make much of a difference to be fair. It is more the financial side if we could have got a few mill in a sale this summer.

Guy's career is potentially down toilet, & people on here are talking about contracts & budgets....

Have a day off.

He wanted to leave …. he’s an asset and we are going to be paying for his recovery.

Ultimately, football is a business.

He absolutely would have been a starter. Only gut to captain is twice in pre-season as well (happy to be corrected on that). If he stayed, he was going to be first choice and then it was whether we went for Okoli or Souttar alongside him. Think Faes is behind the others in Martin's eyes

I'm sure Jon Rudkin will agree.

Anyway, if his recovery doesn't go well the contractual situation won't matter.

Agreed, although I still see a situation where they are all gone by the close of the window

Give him a long deal, but lower than we were originally offering. This will be controversial but he was clearly looking out the door this summer, and we should show we are here for him, but commitment and appreciation is a two way street.

gutted for the lad on the injury, a huge fan of him as a player and hope he’s mentally handling it as best he can.

I mean I thought he’d have left before the season started anyway to be honest. But The likes of Faes always worm their way back in so would have been surprised if Nelson had still been here (and not injured) for him to have been in ahead of Faes.

Either way, I never from when the season ended even considered Nelson in my thinking for this season but that was mainly due to just expecting him to go. So given I hadn’t given him any thought in terms of the team for this season, I just don’t see this as the loss others clearly do.

The loss, as I say, is financial and the fact we will not now be able to move him on and also now have to go into the market for a centre back without it being a direct one in to replace one out. But then carrying long terms injuries in your squad is obviously a hazard of the game but a financially draining one when it happens.

Terrible news, hope he makes a speedy recovery. Both my dad and I couldn't understand at the time why he made the tackle with his right leg instead of wrapping his left leg around the winger. It left him too open to sustaining this type of injury with the lateral movement that went through his knee.

Well, I thought it didn't look that bad at first.

What a shame, and what a loss for this season.

Speedy recovery, Ben!

Luckily, he's only 22. Should heal up just fine.

This means we'll have to bring another centre-back in, as two might leave (let it be Faes and Okoli :fc:).

And Nelson will have to stay beyond next season.

I'm a bit more sympathetic as we're in a crap position on him now. I'm not convinced he will sign for a reduced contract because he will probably get other offers.

But then again the management of him was pretty dreadful before this. It's a really quite miserable situation. I fail to see how his last 12 months could've gone any worse.

This was transfer money in the bank as far as JR was concerned

One of the other young lads with serious value will now have to go now instead

Gutted for Ben

We wasted 330million+ from the Maguire, Fofana, Chilwell, Mahrez, Maddison & Barnes sales, let alone the other transfer fees we received in the past decade.

Clearly transfer money in the bank means f all when JR is in charge.
