Probably one of the greatest fights ever. What a night this was. Arguably the greatest British fighter ever is Ricky

hmm..

Calzaghe?

Completely agree with that shout but arguably just following alone I'd say Ricky just edges it. You won't ever see the type of following Ricky got ever again I don't think.

Calzaghe no doubt a legend in his own right, but come on Hatton fought the absolute world class fighters at their finest. I love Calzaghe he did what he did and again a world class fighter.. but I agree Hatton edges it for me.

Also going back to it boxing was at it's best around Hatton & Calzaghe time, whereas personally now boxing just isn't great anymore. There's no British boxer with a huge following now unless you count Fury but you never know if he's retired or not, one hour he is the next hour he's not. Hatton & Calzaghe were genuinely the last two British boxers with a huge following.

Said it in the death thread but I've lived near where he grew up and he's visited most of the gym's nearby. Never met him myself but know a few people who have. Always had time for people and gave back. Absolute hero and worked so hard to battle his own issues.

This has hit me hard for some reason.

There's something about sportspeople taking their own life which is just so sad and I felt similar when Gary Speed and Graham Thorpe died.

Just got a good vibe from him, always seemed respectful.. and just went in with the best at their best.. a champion, a true legend. No excuses just got on with it

Apologies if this is insensitive but I’ve only just seen the news, is it presumed to be related to his mental health?

Im devastated, we talk about working class heroes and those who stand up for those for those who don’t have a voice, especially in the current climate where it’s so toxic. The Hitman WAS the ultimate hero to lads of a certain time period. We all loved and felt his wins, and picked him up after his losses aware of stuff that was bigger than boxing. Most of all he was brave, he lived his struggles and he pushed regardless. RIP champ.

Both Hatton and Calzaghe certainly modern day greats. Going back to past eras when boxers fought more before getting a sniff of a world title fight the likes of Ted Kid Lewis and Jack Kid Berg deserve to be remembered

It just really goes to show, if it was indeed the 's'-word that was the cause of death, that literally even the toughest of people on the outside in life/work can suffer with the complexities of mental health battles.

Agreed. He's the boxer I grew up on and the one who truly got me into watching boxing. I think the reason why seeing sportspeople taking their own lives is sad is because there's a certain image of sportspeople being rich and happy. When the obvious unfortunate reality a lot sports athletes struggle once they hit retirement and then sometimes it leads to tragic outcomes.

Didn't even know, terrible news. RIP.

His son who is a boxer as well must be devastated.

His lad retired earlier this year not long after hiring Ricky as his trainer. Wonder if his lad found the pressure too much? Always wondered why Ricky never became a trainer himself. I know he did promoting for a while.

Saw him outside York Hall about a decade ago. nodded at him and he stared right through me so i didn't bother him but it was jarring considering his usual jovial personality. shocked me a bit.

He did do a bit of training , his brother Matthew who was a very good boxer himself trained Campbell and also trains his own son Jack

He was in the Fury camp for a while wasn't he?

Sad doesn't really sum up how I feel about this.

Hatton and Naz were the most exciting fighters to come out of this country bar none.

To be fair we had an abundance of quality boxers in that era like Benn, Eubank, Watson, Calzaghe, Hatton, Naz etc
