Rot started when

Does anyone have a genuine opinion when the rot started. I'm not asking for years back because I genuinely thought we would go back up this season but its now looking like it's the opposite. 

What changed the players mindset, when did the rot start to creep in and why are our players so weak mentally and physically

It set about a change in attitude, the likes of Soumare were here, Choudhury etc. All Willy pullers the lot of em

Perhaps controversially, because we did some amazing things afterwards, but I always felt it was when we lost to Aston Villa in the League Cup semi final.

For me, Rodgers bollocking the team at half time even though we were winning. Can’t remember who we were playing though.

Pains me to say it, but when we started playing When you're smiling before kick-off.

 

Actually, I noticed something was very wrong when West Ham beat us 4-1 at the London Stadium the season we finished 8th. Hammers fans behaved like they had thrashed one on the top 6, and we behaved like potential relegation candidates all season. We had just lost Fofana to injury and there was a huge frailty in the team. So i think it started in the preseason after the FA Cup win.

Forest in the cup. 
But I still go back to when Villa got rid of Gerrard and got Emery in. 
At that time I think Villa were either 1 point ahead or behind us. 
We should have done the same as Villa and got rid of Rodgers. 
Not saying we’d have got Emery in but there were a few gettable managers who are now managing in the premiership. 
Slot or Glasner are both at the time imo we could have got.

I have a feeling it was West Brom and I think we were 3-0 up.  It was the weirdest thing and I agree, there was a shift in mentality after that.

The culture at the club changed under Rodgers and we've never recovered from it. Maresca managed to overcome it as hes a top class manager but even he had his struggles at times with some of the players. Massively overpaying on wages hasn't helped attempt to improve the culture either.

Although we had the FA Cup to show for it short term and European football, I'd say the rot properly started when we gave Rodgers the long contract when Arsenal were reported to be sniffing.

 

Giving him the control was the beginning of the end as his transfers were mostly terrible, Rudkin's luck had started to run out and Top had started to undo his Dad's work.

FA Cup win was amazing but it papered over serious cracks. 
 

Brenda should’ve been replaced properly with a Glasner, Rose or even Slot at the time.

Losing to Hull for me the season opener after we had won the premier league.  We were truly woeful that day.  Never forget leaving the stadium, to a team that had just been promoted and their bloody fans singing premier league champions your'e having a laugh!

When we let Schmeichel go. Not only losing an incredible goalkeeper we also lost our last genuine remaining leader who had very high standards.

Our 15/16 style of play should have been our identity.
 

Yes we needed to change some

things slightly like Atletico and Simeone have done over the years, but the core principles of that style should have been drilled into the ethos of the club.

Mine was legia away losing 1-0, remember being fuming after and the knock on effect was dropping into conference league with extra fixtures.

Rodgers should have gone after not making it out that group with Napoli and I just think we lost it from there. 
Wish I still cared as much to get fuming after games now but the passion has gone sadly

Losing Kasper and having Danny Ward as No.1 then letting Rodgers try and get sacked as we got relegated

Problem with that is it showed a soft mentality but then some of those dossers still managed to show enough grit to win the FA Cup.

As far as this season was concerned, last summer. Not sacking Van Nistelrooy, taking far too long to appoint Marti, and failling to rebuild the squad. A sensible managerial appointment, 3 or 4 championship ready signings and a few more departures and we would be nowhere near relegation. We approached this season with callous indifference and arrogance and look where it got us.

The moment we started grossly rewarding mediocrity, and what I mean by that is giving ludicrous contracts to the likes of Hamza Choudhury and building a squad not capable of warranting those wages. And when those sums didn’t match on field performances the good ones started running down contracts… 

 

And also the moment Rudkin et al were given more responsibility with little to no accountability. I should imagine Vichai’s death was the key point there.

 

All created a culture where incompetence reigned.

I think when Rodgers came out publicly and said the squad wasnt good enough in the summer of 22/23 that felt like a big moment.

 

The squad seemed to lose confidence and it has all snowballed since then. We did seem to recover under Maresca but it was clear nobody really believed in Steve Cooper and the negative energy and loss of confidence has been instilled in these players.

 

We needed change but PSR strangled us into not being able to sign players so that negative energy has remained. Its no coincidence that JJ is one of our best players but we needed more signings like him.
