Kasper Schmeichel announces retirement after serious injury as emotional statement issued
 

Leicester City legend Kasper Schmeichel has been forced to retire from professional football after suffering a serious shoulder injury, the goalkeeper has confirmed.
 

Schmeichel, currently at Celtic, sustained the injury for Denmark against Portugal over a year ago and was forced to play on after Brian Riemer used all of his substitutions.
 

The injury was then aggravated in Celtic's Europa League defeat to VFB Stuttgart in February and faced a year-long lay off following required surgery. Now, he has revealed that he has been forced to end his career due to the problem.
 

"When my contract with Celtic expires in June, I will stop my active football career," he told Danish site TV2. "It is a decision that has been made for me.

 

"I have consulted various surgeons and experts in relation to my shoulder, and they have told me that I should not expect to return to playing top football. I have given myself a lot of thought, but I believe that now is the right time.

 

Schmeichel boasts an incredible career, with Leicester City the mainstay throughout. He joined the club from Leeds United in 2011 under Sven-Göran Eriksson before going on to make 479 appearances.

 

Throughout his time at the King Power Stadium, he won the Premier League title in 2016, FA Cup, Championship title and Community Shield. He left the club in 2022 for OGC Nice before spending one season in Belgium with RSC Anderlecht and two years at Celtic.

 

The Danish Football Association has paid tribute after 120 appearances for the national team. They announced: "Kasper Schmeichel retires. From debut in Skopje to World Cup debut against Peru, great saves against some of the world's best nations, a European Championship semi-final at Wembley and much more.

 

"13 years. 120 caps for the Men's National Team. Thanks for unforgettable moments, Kasper."

Fantastic character. He upheld the highest standards whilst he was here, standards hat have evidently eroded since he left. 
 

Had his limitations, but he was a fantastic keeper, had the same presence as his father. That save in the FA cup final is the best I’ve ever seen.
 

Get him back as a coach I say.

I would be surprised if he is there yet mentally. Not even sure he has the coaching licenses done. I'm sure we'll see him back at the club in some capacity in the future, but I'm hesitant to get him back when we are rudderless.

 

But on him retiring, what an unbelievable career he's had. He had enormous gloves to fill and constantly had to shrug off comparisons to his old man, but I felt pretty early on in his career that he was something else. His desire to win was maybe even bigger than his dad's and I'm convinced his aura was a big part of our fairy tale journey together. 

The impact of losing him to Nice was as black and white as things get. We've never looked remotely the same since.

 

For Denmark, we've been spoiled with solid/great goalkeepers ever since I was born. He had to bide his time to get a chance, but once he got the nod, he never looked back and 120 caps (top 5 of all time) is seriously impressive. He performed on the big stage more often than not and Denmark owe him a huge thank you for his part in reaching four major tournaments, which is never a given. His enduring legacy will be the way he put himself forward, protecting his teammates after the Eriksen episode, and wearing his heart on the sleeve in every game - notably against Portugal, where he got the injury that's led to his premature retirement, and finally against Scotland where his painful scream in agony is quite a vivid picture.

But let's be honest here, he also has a massive ego, so whether he can work under whoever comes in would be a huge question mark.

Unfortunately, all careers come to an end but this was obviously not the way Kasper wanted to end his illustrious playing days.

 

A great servant to Leicester City and an equal to Gordon Banks. Thanks for the memories.

He almost certainly had too much power & influence when he was at the club but boy do we need someone like him now.

The club in its current state would never have him back.

 

Rudkin pushed him out and that eventually lead to the first relegation.

 

Schmeichel would bring accountability to the football club, and we all know the board wouldn’t like that.

A wonderful goalkeeper and a great man.  Rushed out to try and save Vichai n co when the helicopter crashed.  Plenty of great performances which I will always remember.  save from Mount and Chelsea in the fa cup final was exceptional.  May he have a happy retirement.

His turnaround here was like the Vardy of goalkeeping. Had so many ridiculous comments about him because of his Dad. All the same competition winner comments. "If I was called Banks or Shilton maybe id get a game".

 

Our best ever goalkeeper for what he achieved here. Simple as that.

Always wanted us to sign him and couldn't believe it when we did.

 

He stayed loyal to us and led by example. Of course he had his flaws but from what people have said, players and people around the club, he seemed like the most professional player you could ever hope to have. Never got involved in any rubbish other players did and was always vocal on the pitch.

 

When he left it really was the beginning of the end!

In what way and why was it too much? I struggle to see how such a vital cog in the club's most successful era ever could have 'too much power & influence'..

Everything went downhill. People refer to Vardy leaving, and what happened this season, but Schmeichel leaving was always the one for me. If he stayed we wouldn't have gone down. 

 

Absolute legend and actually a shame he didn't quite reach 500 games as seeing two players reach that would have been incredible.
