I think even 6/10 appointments probably get us up here. It’s just Martin is a 3/10 appointment for us with where we find ourselves.

Cooper was an abysmal appointment, RVN was crap but he inherited a very shit situation, Cifuentes was mediocre. Maybe I’ve fallen for it again but not-Russel-Martin or-extreme-possession-for-the-sake-of-it should actually go a long way. This team is capable of getting promoted, it’s certainly much more talented than the rest of the division.

There are still much bigger, background issues but the way we’re set up, especially defensively is fixable - we don’t have a curse or a hoodoo we just need to make some semi-sensible decisions.

Keeping Martin jeopardises the sale, KP’s finances, the future of the club so they do actually have to sort something out.

I hope:

A) Everything pans out absolutely fine, we click and Martin takes us up (not happening)

B) We realise our mistake quickly and sack him and appoint a sensible manager - ideally Challinor but anybody with a decent track record that works well with a young squad

So right, problem is the club were too busy talking about a "project" discounting the difficulty in getting out of this division. Also ignoring the person in charge of the "project" had only had one good season in his career and a few ok ones and 2 really bad ones.

Is it being unfair to underestimate the task at hand...

Rebuilding an overhauled squad, integrating new players and young academy products with limited senior experience. Resetting standards, improving the culture and trying to lift the club after back to back relegation. Implementing his playing style (whether you like it or not) with the pressure of an expectant fan base and a non negotiable target of promotion. All of this knowing the majority of fans didn't want him and some are very firmly in the 'told you so' camp unwilling to overlook some of the factors that might excuse an imperfect start. Yes, it's horrible when the team make errors and goals are conceded because of the playing style but that team goal Saturday was absolutely terrific. It didn't happen by accident, and it shouldn't have been a one off either because 2.4xG tends to suggest otherwise.

This fanbase has PTSD because of the trauma the club has put us through over the past two seasons and positive results are required to provide healing. The frequent personnel changes tell us RM still isn't settled on his best team and he needs to find the right solution, quickly. The league table will look very different when he does.

Interesting looking at Opta stats, paints a very poor picture of Martin.

=24th for goals from subs (=3rd most subs made)

1st for errors leading to shots

10th for xG

22nd for xG per shot

21st for set piece xG

24th for fast breaks

1st for passes, 3rd for final third passes

24th for forward passes

5th for backward passes

1st for passes per sequence

23rd for attack speed

13th for shots against

15th for xG against

18th for shots conceded in the box

Without checking I'm sure these patterns would reoccur throughout Martin's spells at other clubs

These are pretty awful stats, similar to Cifuentes last year. I don't know how a manager/coach or whatever can look at these and conclude that their style of play is working, this isn't down to you players or whatever excuse he comes out with or blame game he plays, its down to being utter dogshit. He needs to get some humility and adapt his style as it is crap, the stats don't lie.

Look at the shower of shit this ownership has hired for our last 6 managers.

It might be time for fans to simply check out and stop caring until the ownership leaves.

Trying to detach all my emotion out from the club and enjoy football watching other teams as a neutral.

This is it, they aren't suddenly going to employ a good manager now. There is literally no point wasting energy on it, they will find a way to employ someone more shit even after Martin. They wont just wake up one day and go 'you know what we chose the wrong manager', KP and Jon Rudkin genuinely believe this is the best guy for the job. We probably need to reach wherever we are going with them at the helm, hopefully we get a new owner with a brain.

This is utterly horrifying. Be keen to see how things look if the performance vs Barnsley becomes the new norm or if we are that starved of any notion of attacking football and it wasn't actually that impressive compared to what other efficient teams are creating in games.

Its a bigger issue than the players/manager, nothing changes until they do. The manager and players (culture) are the sympton.

Agree, hence why I said club/regime.

Although Martin needs to go promptly.

Is 24th for forward passes as a % of total passes. Or have we actually made the lowest actual number forward passes in the league whilst making the most total passes in the league.

If its the latter, i dont think i would ever believe such a thing is possible.

Martin going will solve nothing, they will bring in someone equally shit, its a pointless exercise. I think probably given their previous track record they bring in someone even worse, they aren't going to suddenly choose a good manager, an even worse decision at this point probably fires us to league 2.

It's the proportion of our passes that are forward ones, not total overall. Also note that re: forward passes, you have teams all over the table in that top ranking anyhow, so it's not really an indication of anything.

PERCENTAGE OF FORWARD PASSES = 24th

TOTAL PASSES = 1st

PASSES IN THE FINAL THIRD = 3rd

Your right ✅️ I've started watching Cov and throwing my full support behind whoever they are playing. Much more relaxing and enjoyable 🤭

He needs more time, high turnover of players blah blah blah. The trust the process guys.

The stats last year were equally as horrific (especially surrounding our work rate), they never improved and we got relegated. Be interesting what our work rate based stats are looking like.

Not sure I’m reading & understanding those stats correctly, so perhaps a younger and sharper mind will correct me, but 1st for errors leading to shots seems a massive red flag, and 18th for shots conceded in the box suggests that our opponents are getting into dangerous areas pretty often. This is pretty consistent with what I think I’ve been seeing with my layman eye test.
Attacking wise, again the stats back up what I’ve been seeing. Lots of possession, passing, but slow attacks ending in poor shots. On the transition we are woeful. Often this where some of the best chances can be created as the opposition are disorganised, but we appear to shun these opportunities and instead fall back into a slow build up, allowing the defence to organise and reset themselves.

Hoping some journalist has the gumption to challenge Martin with these facts.

He's already pulling results out when you would think he's close to the chop. But every one of them without fail is a false down. Every one of them. If they had anything about them whatsoever they would realise how stupid this is.

But the likelihood of that is miniscule. After all they went for this appointment, with totally predictable results in the first place.

I really do think both parties of the club and the fans have an us vs them mentality. I'd imagine they knew this would annoy our fans after the songs about him a year ago. I really could imagine that they have an attitude that "we tried your way, now you'll follow ours" after last year ended up how it did.

That ground should have protests outside of it every single game without fail until they're gone. Make their exit from here hell. They hate us.

Indeed, re "our way" last season you mention (presumably the fans hounding out Cifuentes in January?). I wonder if we'd have stayed up (obv. still with the points deduction), had he stayed on until the end of the season? He was dogshit but we might have just squeaked it and Rowett was unable to turn it around of course. I really don't have a clue how this season will end, whether or not Martin will still be here at Christmas - but hopefully not like last season's end! - while we probably need to get promoted at the first attempt to avoid administration.

How can it be that giving the new manager a budget to bring in his own players can be a negative?  Players that have played at higher levels than this.   He also has a generation of academy graduates that would walk into any other team in this division.

Most managers would love to have this problem.
