Matterface failing to understand what a minute is. 94:45 on the clock and he says "just as we're entering the 95th minute". Bloke doesn't understand how time works, you aren't born 1 year old.

Yeah, it isn't on the Fletch "bloke down the pub" level but there is a restless supporter vibe about him during England matches.

May not be woke, but really cannot stand the female commentators. Vicky Sparks has a very strange accent and Robyn Cowans shouts too much. Fletcher never shuts up, (doesn’t help that he’s a Forest fan), and Pearce seems to think he is above everyone else. One of the worst ever, was Alan Green on radio 5. Spent more time questioning throw ins he didn’t agree with than commentating on the match. For me, one of his most memorable comments came when City were away to Chelsea. They scored to make it 2. O in the 78th min. His comment, 2.0. Game over. Along comes Steve Guppy and scores 2 goals for a 2.2 draw. Sweet!

He was more like a moany negative pundit and he certainly didn't like David Beckham.

Not at the world cup but my favourite is Dave Farrar, one of the fringe TNT European commentators. Can be a bit excitable but I'm on board with genuine passion for the game, not forced stuff and shit phrases that a lot of modern commentators adhere to.

Adam Summerton also good and seems to be becoming more mainstream

I know it’s a sensitive topic, but the female commentators don’t work for me. I’m not sure exactly why, but I think it has something to do with their high pitched voices clashing with the crowd noises. They have a tendency to get slightly shrill when things get exciting, and it sounds wrong. Same with some of the higher pitched male commentators too. A deeper voice works better, and anchors the tonal range better.

 

However my dislike of female pundits is probably just sexism! 😎

There's a Kiwi female rugby commentator called Rikki Swannell who is brilliant and much better than British female football commentators, her voice is a octave or so lower so maybe that makes it easier on the ear alongside the crowd noise

Drury is constantly forcing it and sounds like he is always anticipating something special. I don't think he used to be like that.

The 5 Live lot are generally class. I like Bill Leslie, Darren Mann, Steve Bower, Simon Brotherton and Adam Summerton too.


Darren "and one thing I will say" Fletcher is the worst by a country mile. Matterface is proper crap but he at least tries to commentate on the game rather than pinning himself as some bastion of football knowledge like Fletcher, who also has the dubious honour of somehow managing to make Ally McCoist actually a bit annoying when he's paired up with him. He commentates like an annoying loud prat in a pub.
