English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur have strengthened their academy ranks with the signing of talented Nigerian defender Maxwell Adedeji.

The news was first reported by Spurs youth team insider Lilywhite Rose, who revealed that the north London club had completed the signing of left-footed centre-back Maxwell Adedeji from Leicester City.

The 18-year-old has already made his unofficial debut for Spurs, playing the second half of the U21s' pre-season opener against National League South side Ebbsfleet United on Saturday afternoon.

He was among a quartet of Nigeria-eligible youngsters on Tottenham Hotspur's books who featured at Morrow Stadium in Ebbsfleet, alongside Miracle Adewole, Elisha Sowunmi and Damola Ajayi.

During his time at Leicester City, he represented the Foxes in the U18 Premier League, FA Youth Cup and Premier League Cup, scoring six goals and providing two assists in 42 appearances.

A product of The McAuley Catholic High School, Adedeji spent time in the academy systems of Southampton, Chelsea and Arsenal before joining Leicester City.

In addition to Nigeria, he is also eligible to represent England and Finland internationally. 

Adedeji has been capped three times by Finland at U17 level.

I think around the end of March he was told he either wasn't being kept or he said he didn't want to stay

 

Ended up finishing the season with trials at Stoke, Norwich, and West Brom

Moving from one state of the art training ground to another isn’t going to be motivation to “sort himself out” is it.

Russell Martin has revealed Leicester City academy's was a "big reason" why he took the job this summer.

The City boss has handed opportunities to a host of youngsters during the opening three friendlies of pre-season, with preparations so far going perfectly to plan. Saturday's 3-0 victory over Burton Albion followed wins over Northampton Town and Bristol Rovers.

Sammy Braybrooke, Will Alves, Bade Aluko and Louis Page have all impressed in the opening games and will be hoping to play key roles in League One. This summer has also provided breakthrough opportunities for the likes of Riley Carr, Lorenz Hutchinson, Kirsten Otchere, Tommy Neale and Nathan Opoku.


Chances have been made available to impress their new manager as work continues behind-the-scenes to strengthen the squad with new signings. Martin arrived at the King Power Stadium with a strong track record of promoting academy players, particularly during his time at Southampton.

At Leicester, that is something he wants to continue. The remainder of pre-season will provide further opportunities for the club's young players to make their mark and show Martin that they can play a part in his plans for the new season.

“When I took this job, one of the most exciting bits and maybe one of the things that the club was interested in me for, was to try to develop young players and give them an opportunity," Martin said.


"I love working with young men to try and develop them. They’re really exciting. I don’t want to put too much pressure on them. It’s really difficult when you’re in the Premier League or Championship for young guys to play, now they should be excited about an opportunity and to play in this way because they suit it.


"I said it on the first day to every member at the training ground that they’ve done a good job [in] providing the club with so many exciting talents and now they have to seize the opportunity.

"We’ll give everything that we’ve got to try and help them. Some of the performances that they’re putting in, amazing. There’s some bits where we have to teach them and the game will do that, they’ll only do that by minutes on the pitch.

"We need men to win football matches every week, to help young players, but with the young ones that we’ve got, it’s amazing."


Martin also revealed that he expects a number of the exciting talents part of the first-team to be involved in the Foxes' League One campaign. "I expect a lot of them to be involved heavily, yeah," he added.

"Honestly it’s a big reason why I came. It’s a really exciting time. Fans have really connected to the young players already, some of them have been here for a long time as well, not like signing at 16/17. It’s an exciting time for them.”

Both of them going to Man City makes me feel a bit sick tbh.

 

In a different timeline, they will have been a big part of our rise back up the divisions.

 

I thought it about Nyoni and Noubissie and I think the same about Monga and Motsi: I really do hope we keep tabs on them both and are ready to pounce if their situations look like they're not going to break through at Man City, just like we would any youngster at a huge club.

 

If we're at a level that matches their ambitions, maybe we'll see one of them back here at some stage.

I can understand why these young players go to Man City, Liverpool etc, but they will have a better chance of developing here and playing, than being one of so many.

Nyoni 6 appearances.

Noubissie 0 appearances, now in France.

Agree but Alves has made 6 first team appearances. Albeit mainly a few minutes each.

But both were interrupted by serious injuries and are only just fully recovered, hopefully so we'll never know what might have been especially as we've been shockingly bad over that period.
