I consider myself more Irish than I do English, more of my direct family are Irish, and only a portion half. Since then I’ve certainly become more distant from my English heritage and closer to my Irish. 
 

But after all the piss taking over the last few weeks, I did actually enjoy watching the Mexico game, and thought England were undeniable very good….. and despite my recent distain for England, (which is probably stronger in the egg chasing sport, and towards the monarchy) I actually felt quite pleased England won, because their performance warranted it….

Too many commentators recently on PL matches, “we’re into the last quarter” instead of saying there’s 25 minutes left. Also, for a number of years, players in a certain position have been described as “quarter backs”! Not sure when added time became “over time”.

I used to get hung up on this but it was how the English originally called it based Association Football likewise Rugby Football became Rugger.

 

Now  i think there's worse changes happening than calling it soccer which many countries other than the USA do some way more associated with England than the USA Australia, New Zealand, Canada plus a few Commonwealth Countries. It gets pretty confusing in those countries if you don't use there.

I also know where the the word soccer came from don't mean I have to agree with it.

Football won't supplant basketball, baseball or American football in the USA - it's too boring for their short attention spans - half-an-hour half-time because they need to be entertained. In their national games scoring is going on all the time - football is too nuanced for them.

A lot on here were posting that the final was a boring game so they missed out understanding what a demonstration of the beautiful game it was. To be clichéd, it was like a bullfight with the Spanish as matador and the Argies as the bull. It was only when Spain scored that they woke up and by then it was clear that their game plan (wait until Messi worked his magic) wasn't going to work. Spain were just too good. The niggling fouls and worse just weren't going to put the Spanish off their game.

For me, it was a great final. Trump, Infantino and good old American hyperbole were the low points. The whole FIFA circus needs a rethink.

It is because goals are such a premium that makes football special. Even the exception of a 6-4 when a goal goes in it is significant. Basketball for me is so boring as there are so many points scored.

It won't but its already surpassed Ice Hockey - and attracts big crowds than basketball (which is an absolute fortune to attend).

 

There's a market which isn't the type of person what watches those traditional sports and the second/third generation immigrant that is more and more apparent across the US. 

 

Average crowds on the last complete recorded data 

 

MLS is around 22k, NBA is 18k, NHL is 17-18k while MLB is 30k.

I'm sure I've read somewhere that soccer is now more popular than baseball in the US, though by what metric I can't remember.

The final wasn’t a typical game that we see in England although sadly it’s becoming so the higher up the league you go mainly due to the financial inequalities. 
 It’s also down to managerial approach. Argentina had enough skill to have played a more attacking game but chose not too. 
 I think I understand the beauty of the game and for me it’s 2 teams of similar ability trying to outplay each other, trying to score more goals than their opponents. Your analogy of a bullfight does some up this game but I don’t find bullfights entertaining at all.
