Used to come over on a coach from Rugby.

All we ever knew of Leicester were the gas towers and The South Leicester Working Mens Club, later The Halftime Orange.

The barmaids were all huge old women, how they steered around each other I do not know.

Place did an awesome Faggots, Chips & Peas, if you ever found a hair in it the length would determine if it had come off a barmaids head or chin.

And the beer was awful 🤣

There's only one, surely. The Victory next to the LRI. Always absolutely rammed before a match and you'd have to squeeze your way to the bar. Much more sedate post match and they had Sky TV, which was a bonus.

Then when it closed, moved on to the Swan and Rushes and then the Robert Peel which was also always rammed. It got to the point where the fire service told them to limit the amount of people they let in on match days, so we then got VIP cards to get in on a Saturday.

Not football related but Leicester's best pub - The Wellington. Had my first ever under age beer there and used to work around the corner on Charles Street, so drank in there most lunchtimes and always every Friday and Saturday night before moving onto The Avery.

I didn't go in until closer to it closing but I always enjoyed it in the Criterion.

Can't believe its been left to rot all these years. I hear it's owned by some guy in London who refuses to lower the lease price which apparently makes it unaffordable. Anyone ITK can say if that's right?

Swan & Rushes. (Pub, External, Key). Published on 13-04-2014

Given the numbers here who mention this place, there must have been some kind of Tardis effect. We'd often come in here once we'd parked up prior to the match, but it rarely felt over-full. Away fans would often be found in there too.

Two big rooms made it feel more spacious than it looks i think.

This was an elite level pub before it closed. The exact type of pub that other cities have multiple of but we now have non.

You'd have thought the Victory would have survived just from matchday for Tigers games. We really are a strange city for pubs.

I very much doubt they were making the faggots whilst standing astride of the mixing bowl, so no.

Remind me not to accept an invite to dinner from you.

It’s not strange why pubs close in Leicester. The demographic is massively changing more than any city this size in the UK(rightly or wrongly). Add in the national trend for people drinking less, the pubs in Leicester are doing well to stay open.

I have really enjoyed this thread. I wish I was born in the mid 80s rather than mid 90s.

I think the bar staff were always fast at serving and lots spaces in nooks, crannies and in the yard. I kind of miss all the pub yards that have covered over to make the pub bigger and suck the atmosphere out. But you did need to be a hardy soul to stand out there on most days.

Used to be alot different in the 80's.I lived at the bottom of Groby Road and a walk into town involved The Robin Hood,The Friar Tuck,Cricketers,Foresters,North Bridge Tavern,Earl of Cumberland.Sanvey Gate Tavern,Joiners and The Ship.........and that was before you got to The Long Stop near the Clock Tower!
