What do you make of England’s performance in the World Cup?

Weird thing for me is I felt we had a better squad at the last world cup despite being knocked in the quarter finals. Coming 3rd a fantastic achievement, performances against Croatia Mexico and France really stood out for me. It was decent but there is certainly areas we could have been so much better, no taking Trent cam back to haunt us I feel especially with the problems we faced in the right back position with injuries or suspensions. Maybe giving too many minutes to Harry Kane perhaps. I feel like I should be happy with 3rd! but at the same time another missed opportunity again with a manager that once again bottled it at a big occasion. 8/10 for me.

It felt extremely same old England to me. Some highs. Some fun. A 0-0 draw in the group stage. But ultimately fell short against the first big name.

That first half against Argentina, and France… The croatia game… there’s been some real highlights there that have happened too often for me  for it to be a flash in the pan. I do think other team will now start taking us seriously as contenders for ANY competition we are in.

 

 

We defeated ourselves in The Argentina game. They didn’t win it, we threw it away.   So really it’s our frailties that’s holding us back, not our lack of ability. Iron out the mistakes and awful decision making and we WILL win either the next Euros OR the next World Cup. Maybe both. Bringing Bellingham and Anderson on a what saved the game against the French. Good decision.

I'm not convinced it's true as much as it was once upon a time with how much data there is out there now. You might be right but I'm not so sure.

Na they definitely give us shorter in tournaments, so much cash goes on England. I'm not disagreeing with with your point by the way re: beating favourites.

All I can say I'm so glad we have great female national football team who have won back to back euros, otherwise this generation would have never see their national side win a trophy. Meanwhile for the mens, maybe we are getting closer, I remember growing up watching England and always crashing out on penalties in tournaments in quarter finals with players that never played as a team who put club before country. Now the desire as changed, players want to be part of the England squad and do look like they enjoy the experience of international football.

Despite reaching the Final, I thought the Euros was very underwhelming in virtually every match. This had, in parts, better displays. Played well against Croatia and Mexico, limped through in others, awful 30 minutes followed a good hour against Argentina.

 

Not a failure but the pressure is on to beat the next level of team.

It was winnable and we screwed up. 
 

France will feel exactly the same. 

 

6.5/10 but we rode our luck and individual moments by Bellingham and Kane pulled us through.

 

A better goalkeeper and dare I saw better tactics against Argentina and we win the entire thing.

Yeah we were favourites and rightly so. Germany have been pretty terrible since winning the World Cup in 2014 and we were at home.

We've had a few losses as favourites but never wins as underdogs. I think Argentina in 2002 might've been the last game England won as a bookie underdog in a tournament. Including everything I can think of only two others - Spain away in the nations league, and bizarrely, last night against France.

Saw us in Boston and Miami, both phenomenal experiences that have me hungry for more.

 

On the pitch it was tough going at times. We should’ve been in the final

The ability is there, in my opinion Tuchel got it completely wrong on the night V Argentina. There were some mixed performances throughout but you get that at international tournaments.

Yes, he’s a very hot / cold keeper.

Reflex save from memory and he does have some good attributes to be fair. 

 

However, his weight distribution is sometimes poor as is his positioning and he tends to dive under the ball on occasion too.

The team lacked any cohesion or distinct style of play, once again operating as a 'moments team' that relies entirely on individual brilliance.

 

Overall, I'd say the performance was about par, we had an easy side of the draw and beat the lower-ranked teams we were expected to defeat.
