We can‘t field only 19- or 20-year olds.

The trick is in the mix.

Wish the guy well here.

We‘re a bit of an unknown now, with so many new players or younger players thrown into the limelight.

I‘m cautiously optimistic.

The reality is that we won't play the young players.

It will be the same as last year with Chaplin instead of Jordan James, Cullen instead of Ayew, Braybrooke instead of Winks, Alves instead of Fatawu, Aluko instead of Ricardo and Adebayo instead of Daka.

The rest of the squad will still be built up by Skipp, Okoli, Faes, Thomas, Choudhury, Nelson, Mavididi, BDCR, Coulibaly, Okoli.

Same old same old really, no room for Hutchinson, Evans, Otchere, Carr, Joseph, Neale, Gray to have a breakthrough season here. At a push Page might pick up his first season over 1000 minutes considering we haven't yet replaced Aaron Ramsey/Mukasa. If we sign one more midfielder or forward on top of Adebayo then expect Page to get 500 minutes over the season and sent back to the u21s again.

Quite a statement, that.

Just off the top of my head: Gullit, Rijkaard, Beckenbauerr, Philip Lahm, James Milner, David Alaba, Camavinga, Javier Zanetti, Kimmich, Fernando Llorente, Ashley Young, Emre Can, Geremi, Luiz Fernandez...

And the best of them all - Sir Jeffrey Schlupp.

You are compare a journey man championship player with some of the elite players in the world, wow......

Difference is, Cullen doesn‘t cost £20m in transfer fees.

If its a 1m that like 20m to us now.

We still have plenty if older players Thomas, Hamza, Skipp, Chaplin, Mavididi, MaCathy, Faes and BCDR.

Let hope he works out.

If "old" means "experienced" to you, then yes, we do have some more "older" players.

Thomas is 25, Choudhoury 28, Skipp 25, Mavididi 27, Faes 28.

That is not old, but most footballers' best years ahead.

Plus, Faes and Mavididi should be shipped sooner than later. They've either burnt their bridges or shown they don't care about the club.

And Faes and Mavididi are definitely overpaid/on massive wages, wages we can't afford in the third tier.

BDCR might be worth a punt in League One (provided he stays fit).

McCarthy's age is less relevant to me, as he is a goalkeeper.

I don't get this doom and gloom and/or logic.

The season hasn't really started yet and people are already expecting the worst.

Have a little faith. It's a 46-game season, ten games into it should give us a better picture.

Chaplin is 29, Cullen 27, Adebayo 28. Braybrooke is 22, Alves 21, Aluko not even 20 yet FFS.

As for the other players from last season (btw, you mentioned Okoli twice), I do expect some more to leave (permanently and/or on loan).

Plenty of room for youngsters in this squad to prosper. And they don't come with the (same) high (and false) expectations of seasons past.

What part of the logic is incorrect.

We simply do not have room in the 18 man match day squad to play academy players.

                 Cullen

Mavididi Chaplin Alves

           Skipp Braybrooke

Thomas Nelson Okoli Aluko

               McCarthy

Bench:

Stolarczyk

Choudhury

Faes

Mcfarlane

BDCR

Adebayo

I don't consider the likes of Alves and Braybrooke as academy talent really as their involvement in the first team is long overdue and they are both clearly our best players.

No room on the bench for the likes of Evans, Hutchinson, Otchere, Carr, Joseph in a season when we are in league one is actually shocking. Our squad is beyond bloated.

People were worried we were going to have to play the academy this season as well.

I just think for the likely amount it’ll cost (around £2m?) Davis Keillor-Dunn is just such a better profile and so much more prolific at this level.

I do understand that RM will see Cullen as someone he can trust and knows fully what to expect from him, it’s just not very aspiring is it.

Evening Foxes. A Swansea perspective.

Firstly, Russy absolutely adores Cullen. Worships the ground he walks on. We had Morgan Whittaker at the club at the same time at one point and Martin unfailingly selected LC. One way or another, you're probably going to see a lot of him whilst Martin is in charge.

The bad? (And bear in mind that this is based on watching him in The Championship) He's got no pace. Can't beat a man. His physical presence is basically zero. He can go whole periods, whole games, whole months whilst being almost totally anonymous on the pitch. I'd compare it to playing with ten men, but at least with ten men you know you're a man down and can prepare for it. Harder when you're supposed to have eleven.

But, and it's a big but...

I can't deny that the lad has a knack for scoring important goals. Even during the anonymous periods that I mentioned above you could never rule out him appearing out of nowhere on the end of a move, to smack home a rebound, or boot one in from further out that put us in front or nicked a draw. It's one of the main reasons why a lot of our supporters never lost faith in him despite the mountain of evidence to the contrary, and why I can honestly say that I wouldn't be surprised if he gets you 15+ goals this season in L1. I wouldn't expect it to happen, but it might.

This sounds very Bob Reid. Meh.

I understand your concerns but I think you’re missing the bigger picture. We could be on track to play 60 competitive fixtures this year and some of the players you’ve mentioned missing out of the 18 man squad are the next choice in their positions.

A lot depends on Martin of course but I can still see those players getting a lot of game time over the course of the season, especially considering for a few it’ll be their first real season of first team football.

Just scrolling through this thread and others, it's amazing how many times you see "if Adebayo stays fit" he'll be a good signing. lol

While we're at it, why don't we offer 2 to 3 year contracts to Darren Eadie, Lee Morris, Jack Wilshere and Darren Anderton.

So Otchere and Hutchinson will still be the best strikers at the club after we sign Cullen and an injury prone Adebayo :P

Why do they both have to be starting regularly?

Because of our current situation, it would be foolish to purchase players for this sort of outlay if the are not starting. Make no mistake, teams in this league don’t usually pay these sort of wages.

Scenes when he's signed as a no. 10 to play in the hole behind Ballard

Joking, it's kind of a bit of a 'shrug the shoulders' signing if he really is being brought in to play up top. But I'm past losing sleep over our club's inability to even consider a recognised striker fit for the division we find ourselves in.

Besides, our benchmark is truly appalling - our recognised strikers got 11 goals between them last season. Eleven. If he's going to be the main man I'll be happy with double figures and him not slowing our attack to a crawl like Ayew did.

Everyone that’s crying about his age and resale value etc etc.

We already have good youth prospects, we don’t need more youth prospects. That will actually block our youth players from progressing. We need good senior pros with the right attitude around the squad to set a good example to said youth players and help with their development.

If what RM is saying it true and he believes that the players he has signed are a good example for the dressing room then I don’t see what the issue is.

You don’t want players blocking our youth teams path to the first team but you want us to sign some of the best youth talents in the world, and you also believe that we can get these superstar youth players at a cut price but don’t want us to sell our superstar youth players at a cut price.

It’s not about his age or profile! It’s about the fact he players in the same position we already have Chaplin, BDR, Alves and Page who can play there.

It is the last position we need when we have gaping holes such as striker and right winger.

I don’t have a problem signing a 27 year old to contribute now. I have a problem us doing what we have for years and creating an imbalanced squad which results in square pegs in round holes to accommodate them!

Yes but this is the squad NOW. There's a whole month of transfer window left. I'd be shocked if 4 or 5 them haven't left by then. Nelson will go he has one year left and someone will pay 5 to 10m for him. Skipp, Mavididi and Faes will likely go too. We also play in this vertu trophy shit and first round of FA Cup. The way Martin speaks I believe the likes of Carr, Neale and Hutchinson and Ogchere will  get plenty of game time. And Isee Page as a starter with Braybrooke most of the season to be honest.

27, should be coming into his prime, been predominantly playing at championship level, a Welsh international player, played under Russel before, might not be a goal scoring machine but coming from what Swansea fans themselves have been saying he clearly has an eye for a goal when it counts which is something we have massively missed, low wages

I don’t know what people aren’t liking?

Looks to me like the lad needs a change and to move on from Swansea so perhaps dropping down a league to a Club like ours under a style and system like Russel ball is exactly what he needs?

didn’t do great at Lincoln at this level 4 years ago but he’s 4 years more experienced now and has had better season since then at a higher level so I’m not going to judge him at this level based on his time at Lincoln

it’s not an exciting name but what are folks expecting?

i think he could do a job for us, hopefully

he also might not be the only forward we sign

I am on the same page as you on this one, I think this will be a very solid signing, it’s not the spectacular or exciting name the fans were perhaps hoping for but given he has played for Russell before and that he has had a pretty solid career in the championship then I think he is a decent addition, he brings experience to what is a pretty young squad and given we are highly likely to lose most if not all of the likes of Faes, Souttar, Skipp, Mavididi and hopefully Reid before the window closes then it’s a profile we will need.

That’s probably where he’s going to play though isn’t he?

Thats where he played last time he was under Russels management so I’d assume that’s going to be the case now

Doesn't mean he is a striker though. Ayew played there last season and it was our one major weakness all season.

As I said last night, Cullen did play up front under Martin in a front two. So the records say he has played a good amount of games up front but a chunk of that is in a front two and we don't have the profile of player yet to play alongside him.

Even if we do I then wonder how you set us up with Chaplin there as well.

Nope. Not comparing at all. That would be mad. I was just naming utility players that were a bit good.
