brookfox Posted 3 January 2008 Posted 3 January 2008 This rumour seems to have been aroun for ages... Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill is preparing to offer former club Leicester £1m for 20-year-old defender Richard Stearman. (Star)
brookfox Posted 3 January 2008 Author Posted 3 January 2008 He's not that stupid. Fair point, I wouldn't want to live in Birmingham either!
Darkzzz_ Posted 3 January 2008 Posted 3 January 2008 ha ha... best transfer rumour i have heard in a while!! but a million is well worth it though isnt it??
Fat Ron Posted 3 January 2008 Posted 3 January 2008 If its true ( a big if!!!) I'd take it. Ready made replacement in James Chambers and to get £1m for a player who hasnt really shone this season would be great.
Rocky Dennis Posted 3 January 2008 Posted 3 January 2008 Personally I think Stearman is fookin rubbish! £100 k would be a good price IMO!
Mort Posted 3 January 2008 Posted 3 January 2008 Sell Sell Sell... He's shown in the past that he could be a decent player but for one reason or another he's never been able to demonsrate that consistently (same with Fryatt), and when he's been poor he's been very very poor... so cash-in if there's a shred of truth about it (good for teh club, good for the player - its win win! ). To be honest he'd probably do well from being managed by MON, he's a master at getting the best out of apparently average players.
SamL Posted 3 January 2008 Posted 3 January 2008 It would be a good portion of the Fulop fund. We have Chambers/N'Gotty/Kenton to play there so we have the cover and maybe buy a new right back. I don't think MON is that stupid. Stearman isn't worth £1 million.
Mort Posted 3 January 2008 Posted 3 January 2008 Take it.1 Million more towards the Fulop fund. Gives me an idea... how about a wip-round on Saturday (sure we could come up with a few bob).
Phlashman Posted 3 January 2008 Posted 3 January 2008 I agree with everyone, get as much as we need to get our Fulop back.
davieG Posted 3 January 2008 Posted 3 January 2008 So am I the only one who thinks we should keep him, Stearman takes a lot of criticism but is a solid member of our squad. I don't think we should be losing players like him which will weaken the 'first team' squad there are plenty of other players who need to be moved on without getting rid of Stearman. Money of this value shouldn't be a problem with MM if it is then he's in for a shock if he wants to get us into the Premier League. I find it ironic that you all seem so glad to get rid of a player that has recently been called upto the U21s and is wanted by no less than MON at Aston Villa who happen to be sitting seventh in the Premier League, perhaps I'm not so wrong after all.

I think your right, sort of, he's put in some shody performances this season I have to say but he's not been all bad, and you know the minute he leaves his form will resemble that of Cafu in his mid twentys and we will all look stupid for wanting rid for "100k." Having said that a million pounds is worth thinking about.

I think it's the Football Manager approach. If you need a GK, LB, LM and AMC and someone offers you £1m for a RB that you don't particularly like then you sell him off and use the funds elsewhere. Real football isn't quite the same as that so we will probably keep him and carry on playing Chambers out of position and Henderson and Mattock in the first team, which is obviously all working brilliantly.
Ric Flair Posted 3 January 2008 Posted 3 January 2008 I rate Stearman. He's been guff compared to the standard he set in the 2005/06 season, but he's got more ability than any of our other right backs IMO. He also scores goals. I think Holloway is the sort of manager who can get Stearman to push on. But if Ollie does think that Stearman hasn't got what it takes to improve and fulfill his potential and the rumours of Villa wanting him are true then it might be a good bit of business. My gut instincts would be to keep him though.
Master Fox Posted 3 January 2008 Posted 3 January 2008 Give MON the credit he deserves here. There is absolutely no way he’d take a player of Stearman’s awful standard and ability into a top 6 premiership squad. This rumour is beyond a joke.
Master Fox Posted 3 January 2008 Posted 3 January 2008 If it's true. Oh well.If it's untrue. Oh well. DB11, oh well...
MC Prussian Posted 3 January 2008 Posted 3 January 2008 If it's true. Oh well.If it's untrue. Oh well. "Ched", anyone?
DB11 Posted 3 January 2008 Posted 3 January 2008 DB11, oh well... Well what? At least finish your sentence
Babylon Posted 3 January 2008 Posted 3 January 2008 Keep him unless it's £2m upfront!!! If Curtis Davis is worth £10m, then that's the minimum we should get!!!

I like Stearman and takes a lot of unfair criticism imo. He played well over Christmas and seems to be finding a bit of form. He had a very good game against Wolves in which nothing went past him all afternoon and that was off the back of his awful performance against Hull. They only got the into the game when they brought Keogh on and attacked our left flank. He then had two more good games against Ipswich and Charlton too. Neither of our full backs have had any protection in front of them all season because of our lack of midfielders yet we still have one of the best defenses in the league. Stearman has been a big part of that and he looks set to bag at least five goals this season from defense. Thats a good return. If we sell Stearman I don't know were else we are going to find a 20yo right back who has already played 100 games in the division who is rated by the England U21 camp and scores goals.
davieG Posted 3 January 2008 Posted 3 January 2008 I think your right, sort of, he's put in some shody performances this season I have to say but he's not been all bad, and you know the minute he leaves his form will resemble that of Cafu in his mid twentys and we will all look stupid for wanting rid for "100k."Having said that a million pounds is worth thinking about. Well who hasn't put in some shoddy performances, Stearman has had to suffer more managers with different approaches to how football should be played than most players come across in a 15 year career so I think he deserves some slack I think it's the Football Manager approach. If you need a GK, LB, LM and AMC and someone offers you £1m for a RB that you don't particularly like then you sell him off and use the funds elsewhere.Real football isn't quite the same as that so we will probably keep him and carry on playing Chambers out of position and Henderson and Mattock in the first team, which is obviously all working brilliantly. I've no objection in principle to selling players to change the squad around but contrary to what people think I don't think we have an abundance of attacking RBs, Stearman & Chambers are the only candidates for me. I actually feel if MM is serious about getting promoted then we need both of them. I can't see any point in selling a key player, and I believe he is given a stable situation and the right guidance and weakening the squad in order to strengthen another position. There are so many players that need to be moved on but Stearman isn't one of them, not for a £1mill and not at this time. If IH is planning to bring in 4,5 or 6 players the last thing we need is further changes to the team.
