Jimmy Posted 11 October 2008 Posted 11 October 2008 Like Fryatt then I have been critical of Fryatt to, though not for that on here, more his wastefulness in front of goal, I have screamed at him for not looking up during games
foxaholic Posted 12 October 2008 Posted 12 October 2008 Still think we should offer him a new contract. Possiblly but anyone anything like should score in this league Hayles has scored 3 in 2 appearances and one as sub for cheltenham which makes Howard look poor
Salieri Posted 12 October 2008 Posted 12 October 2008 Is Fryatt still gonna get stick on here if he finishes the season with 20+ goals? Which, lets face it, looks pretty likely. He may miss a few chances here and there but dont all strikers? At least he's getting himself in the right positions to be on the end of these chances. He's still very young and far from being the finished article. I would agree that he may not have progressed at the rate as most would have hoped or expected, but strikers rely on service and confidence and id say he had very little of either last season. He seems to be a hard working striker who looks to make things happen rather than wait for chances on a plate. He also seems to be a fairly skilful player, he's not the quickest, but for me, he just needs to work hard on his finishing if he wants to become a genuinely good striker. I don't agree that this is his level and if we were to gain promotion on the back of him scoring 20+ goals and he maintains his fitness levels then i think he could prove a lot of his doubters wrong next season. I'd be gutted if we lost him this season because whilst we are in this division, we would struggle to replace him with much better. I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but give the lad a chance i say
Alexikokopops Posted 12 October 2008 Posted 12 October 2008 I'm sorry but that is absolute BOLLOCKS!!! 1) I saw Colchester away on the TV - he was basically playing centre mid - look at the 11 we picked that day 2) I was at QPR. Fryatt played on the wing. End of. 3) He was definitely on the wing away at Southampton in the cup 4) At least 4 of those sub games he was on for less than 5 minutes There are other mistakes in that detail. I'm not saying he was brilliant last week - he wasn't. But get your facts right. You seem to have missed my point. My point was that he had enough opportunity (21 games) up front before he was played on the wing and used as a sub, so we can ignore your fourth point. Also, even if I got the positions he played in those three games wrong he still had enough of an opportunity playing up front. Anyway, I also went to the QPR match, where he definitely started up front with Hayles. This may've changed when Howard came on, I can't remember though. I also watched the Colchester away game, where I thought he started up front in a 4-3-3 formation (which we persevered with a lot around the Megson/Burrows/Taggart times due to our lack of wingers and injured central midfielders, hence a lot of games for Chambers in central midfield). You may be right about Southampton away in the cup though. So in conclusion, even if you were right with those first three points (I dispute the first two) then it's still not absolute bollocks (as you delightfully put it) because he still had a decent opportunity up front before he was regularly being bought on as a sub and played on the wing.
Tilley Posted 9 November 2008 Posted 9 November 2008 Foxes boss Nigel Pearson is praying Matty Fryatt signs a new deal after the hotshot netted his 14th goal this season.Fryatt's contract expires in the summer and his agent's talks with owner Milan Mandaric have not got far. Derby are one club monitoring the situation and, having put in another fine display, Pearson was full of praise for his hotshot. He said. "Goalscorers are very important so Matty's an important player for us - he will be for the remainder of the season and hopfully beyond that."
Matt Posted 9 November 2008 Posted 9 November 2008 I ain't really been in this thread alot, so not sure whats been said but if I was Fryatt with everyone on my back (Or so it seems) with everyone slagging me off i'd certainly be thinking "Why the fook should I stay" and be looking for a move. Then where will our goals come from?
Daggers Posted 9 November 2008 Posted 9 November 2008 if I was Fryatt with everyone on my back (Or so it seems) with everyone slagging me off i'd certainly be thinking "Why the fook should I stay" Funny how he only seems to hit a vein of form when he needs a contract renewal or a new club. Exactly how prolific does anyone think he'll be if we extend his contract and return to the Championship? I'm betting he'd be lucky to make double figures and would once again suffer a crisis of confidence and weight.

I'd be more inclined to say he seems to have hit a vein of form playing against pub teams.
Corky Posted 9 November 2008 Posted 9 November 2008 I'd be inclined to see if he can score goals at the level above under Pearson. If he doesn't, then get rid.

I don't believe any striker fails to score goals on purpose but you're right about The Championship. He'd score more than last season because, presumably, he'd get a better supply but his limitations have seemed show up at that level... his lack of real pace, lack of great strength, lack of aerial power, lack of a shot from distance. He looks a bench option to me in The Championship but not many will believe that view while he's scoring so prolifically. And I'd doubt he'd want to be a bench option anyway. Not that he couldn't prove me wrong and change my mind. I expected him to score goals this season but he's got more than I imagined at this stage.
somebum Posted 9 November 2008 Posted 9 November 2008 Fryatt misses a lot of chances but at the end of the day he is hot on top of his form and we'd be idiots to get rid of our top scorer...let him finish top of the goal charts and that will bump his price up; get rid then if we gain promotion cuz he cant hit a barn door in Championship

Anish Posted 9 November 2008 Posted 9 November 2008 Who else could we get for free (if Fryatt left for nowt) to replace him in the summer? Proven goalscorers are hard to come by, even if they are only League 1 standard. It's not like Howard and DJ have proven themselves for us in the Championship - Howard can barely score in League 1 let alone a higher level. The fact is, whatever Fryatt's limitations, without his goals we would be in trouble. Until we can find somebody else who could score on a consistent basis at this level, we should try to keep him.
Daggers Posted 9 November 2008 Posted 9 November 2008 I don't believe any striker fails to score goals on purpose Yep, but he is one of those players who needs an extra level of motivation to achieve a normal game...that, and as Fez says, a substandard level of opposition. He may have poked in a goal against Villa but his limitations have been all too obvious to us for seasons. I can see the argument for signing up our top scorer for an extended contract but it really makes little sense if we aim to get promoted and then target the top of the Championship. I just hope that we don't end up obligating ourselves to a fat contract which will render him unsellable when the truth hits home next season.

Until we can find somebody else who could score on a consistent basis at this level, we should try to keep him. Surely the whole point is that we won't be at this level next season? Surely we don't expect to get a replacement for free?
Webbo Posted 9 November 2008 Posted 9 November 2008 I don't think that his contract coming up is relevant to his current form.If he was in the middle of a lengthy contract you could say he was angling for a transfer.

I'd be more inclined to say he seems to have hit a vein of form playing against pub teams. At the end of the day, bottom line is he's the only one with a decent number of goals next to his name. We need to be assured we're signing a genuine replacement before letting him go anywhere, so why anyone would want to see him go in January is beyond me. We can't keep holding onto the belief that Stevie Howard or DJ Campbell might score goals at this level.
Daggers Posted 9 November 2008 Posted 9 November 2008 why anyone would want to see him go in January is beyond me. Who wants to see him go in January?
Matt Posted 9 November 2008 Posted 9 November 2008 How old is he? Would we get compo? He's 22. Don't you only get compo if they have been at the club since young and through the ranks, and have been trained up by the club? This would be Walsall would it not? Infact, come to think about it Fryatt was linked with a move in the past (Can't remember who to, How much was rumored, e.t.c, but sure he has been) and there was an article on a Walsall site saying they would be entitled to some payment due to clauses in the deal when we bought him.
