England Bid for World Cup 2018

When I was on holiday, I watched a report on the Qatari bid on that al-jezeera news and I was impressed. For those who think the matches will be played in blistering heat, you're wrong. All stadia will be fitted with air con systems and be the most advanced stadiums in the world. I'm happy Qatar got the World Cup should be excellent.

Anyone complaining about the heat issue in Qatar: The stadia can be cooled down by air con thanks to solar energy (for instance).

You can bring it down to reasonable temperatures, e.g. 26 degrees Centigrade.

Who gives a fuck, we're better looking and less corrupt than any other country in the world

lol

I know this is a joke but I just want to force the point home to the divs among us.

Is there actually any major sport left that isn't massively bent? I mean, football, tennis, cricket, snooker etc., all more bent than Mr G Norton.

The fact Qatar was awarded the world cup speaks volumes about FIFA.

Other people could have said the same thing about FIFA if we had been awarded it though. Our leaders support state terrorism (you only have to read a couple of Mark Curtis books to know this) in a number of countries and get up to as much mischief as the leaders in Qatar.

So can you tell me one single reason why England (the birthplace and home of football, home to the worlds strongest, most watched and most profitable football league) wasn't deemed good enough to host this tournament? Not only that, why England couldn't get more votes than rank outsiders Netherlands/Belgium? Your really going to pin it on the laughably mythical"English snobbery"

I always thought Scotland was the birthplace of football :dunno:

When contrasted with other Arab states such as Saudi Arabia, for instance, Qatar has comparatively liberal laws, but is still not as liberal as some other Arab states of the Persian Gulf like UAE or Bahrain. Qatar is a civil law jurisdiction. However, Shari'a or Islamic law is applied to aspects of family law, inheritance and certain criminal acts. Women can legally drive in Qatar and there is a strong emphasis in equality and human rights brought by Qatar's National Human Rights Committee. Qatar also has the largest fines in the world in terms of traffic violation as per the recent change in 2010.

Teehee... Finally a World Cup by men for men in a men's country (there's about 3 guys per gal in Qatar).

Confirmed from the mouth of an actual voting FIFA delegate...

The "evil" British media was why we did so badly.

Love the fact that you lot are throwing stones whilst living in glass houses. Britain is, after all, the place where corruption is unheard of. Heinous crime, high teenage pregnancies and vile institutionalised racism is non-existent.

I didn't agree with Qatar either, but show some respect.

1. Qatar is a small rich peaceful country. A very nice place. Foreigners out-number the natives. Lots and lots of Europeans & Americans live there. Qatar is a fairly liberal country compared to its neighboroughs, but you are still expected to respect the culture and laws of their country.

2. Alcohol is served in places, mainly in restaurants, bars and nightclubs, and concerts, but its not drunk in public places. And Im sure come 2022 they will bend the laws [bloody part-time Muslims].to accommodate foreigners who cannot go a month without a drink and would disregard the Qatari laws & culture anyway.

3. Gulf Arabs love Westerns. They treat Westerns with far more respect and courtesy than they treat their own people. Believe me, Arabs are proud people and they are desperate to put on a good show - and if that means bending the laws for a month while drunk, ill-behaved, rude foreigners come to their country, then so be it.

4. The hot weather is a concern. But they have 12 years to come up with a solution.

What percentage of the attendances do you think will be female in this liberal country of yours?

I love how that Panorama programme is being blamed for England's bid failing because it highlighted corruption in Fifa, yet as soon as both Russia and Qatar were announced as hosts, everyone was shouting "FIX!" and claiming Fifa is so corrupt and there should be investigations and the like.

Brilliant! lol lol

And how many of the workers who build the grounds will be able to see games?

I have no issue with the Russian bid but I do think Qatar over Oz is a travesty.

suprised no-one has mentioned that in the next 10 years britain is already hosting the olympics, the rugby world cup, the cricket world cup and ( i think i'm right in saying) the commonwealth games.

Maybe we should have been fine with letting someone else host something rather than going for the WC as well.

Couldn't give a shit what else we were hosting!

This would have been ENGLAND's World Cup anyway, not Britain's. Slight difference.

the olympics are in london, the 2015 rugby wc in england (millenium stadium might be used), 2019 cricket wc in england, in fact the only one i mentioned not in england is the 2014 commonwealth games (glasgow).

What percentage of women attend Leicester City games?

There are enough mini-skirt wearing females in Qatar. The native Qatari women usually wear their hijab and Qatari Abaya but many of them dont adhere to their religious values anyway. There are plenty of beaches, chicks in bikinis, tank tops etc. There are no dress code but it is expected that people dress modestly, but if you dont nobody will say anything to you.

There are loads of Russian and Filipino hookers in Qatar.

There are many other things one can criticise about Qatar, like will such a tiny country be able to cope with the huge amount of foreigners coming, and what will they do with the stadiums afterwards etc - but women and booze is not a worry. I promise you. Qatar is already a fairly liberal country - it will be even more liberal in 12 years time.

People are moaning about the Panorama episode, but if anything, all yesterday's circus did was confirm the accuracy of their reporting.

Actually in the last 10 years or so I think the amount of women attending Leicester games has increased dramatically. And for me the main difference is that in Leicester if women don't attend it's because they probably don't like football or would rather be doing something else.

I must admit I am talking from the very small experience I have of Qatar - which has only ever been in transit at the airport. Being that I hate airports I spend the majority of my time in the smoking room in Doha - an area where Arab men go to smoke while their partners stand outside holding their things. I know woman are technically allowed in the smoking room because it often contains western woman, but there's more chance of seeing Messi sporting the Leicester crest than seeing an Arab woman in the smoking room at Doha. I'm sure it will be the same that women are technically allowed to go to the football matches when the World Cup comes to Qatar.

Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions or maybe the arab men are just in transit, much like me. I don't know - I wish I could believe your 'liberal country of the Middle East' proposal, but from what I know (and I'm happy to be educated otherwise) it just seems like more of the 'same old'

I've heard, and not too sure how true this is, that they were going to pick these stadiums up brick by brick and plonk them down in Africa after the World Cup? Now I'm not sure if thats true or what the point of that would be, but I guess they have the money to do this and considering they're also on about producing Air Conditioning within the grass and around the stadia this could well be true?

Edit: Having seen someone else express their only knowledge of Qatar, can I point out my first and real knowledge on Qatar is that they were the worst team in the first ever FIFA Computer Game.
