IF we were to sign Gilbert, I am guessing that this guy would be first choice with Gilbert backup? I would guess this prospect will give them difficulties in signing Gilbert as he'll be after first team football I'm sure.

I just think it gives us another style of play.

Gilbert will always support going forward and provide another alternative to wide play. Neilson is more of a tenacious defender that will (hopefully) prove hard to get by and bring some further experience and solidity to our back line.

I would feel inclined to play a Gilbert style player at home matches or where we go out on the offensive. Neilson would be used during games when we're underdogs and need to sit back more (defending a lead etc).

"If I can target someone like Steve Howard, then I'm sure it will give us different options in attack and, hopefully, create goal-scoring chances."

He's been given his brief already; Nige doesn't mess about.

I think it'll be a bad thing for the club in the long term if we get promoted next season.

We'd probably end up doing a Derby and come straight back down.

I'd rather have a consolidating year in the Champo next year.

MM will borrow money like crazy to ensure we stay up

His attitude and his enthusiasm is superb, seriously i'm more and more thinking of changing my pre-season prediction for us, its currently 10th.

We need more players with this attitude signing this summer, lets just hope he performs.

Standard boring shit really. We've heard it a thousand times before.

He's hardly gunna say yeah the manager said he wants to push for promotion but I told him fook it let's concentrate on going out on the lash and kick around in mid-table. I'm not going house-hunting, I'm just gunna live in a B&B til I see whether Leicester is as shit as everyone says it is. The Championship is pretty gash too, boring stadiums, long-ball football, I would stayed in Scotland but it was too bloody cold.

If he (a new signing) has faith in Pearson, and obviousley the remaining players do then I'm feeling rather confident.

The players have confidence in the manager, have confidence in themselves, show it on the pitch and we get promoted :chant:

He didnt have many of them but they never looked a threat due to the pure size of the ipswich back four, there all over 6ft and we struggled in the air abit against them. I think they may prove useful though

Well when Neilson can actually throw one without being penalised for a foul throw, maybe they'll be dangerous.

They will never be as good as Delap's, he whips them in at pace. Neilson's is more of a floater, which can turn into catching practice if no-one goes for them

I don't think they're any more useful than Oakley's on yesterday's evidence, particularly after Oakley set up the opener in midweek.

Agree although they could possibly improve with a longer run up.

We couldn't really see on the stream but they looked liked Oakley's however we all know that you can see it better if you're there so I am excited to seeing them live at Bramall Lane on Tuesday :)

The first one displayed the fact that they can be particularly long, but as has been said, they had a fairly sizeable back line and it rendered it less effective. I would think that they would lead to at least one or two goals this season though

this is true, he always seemed to be struggling to get a run up, especially when in the final third of the pitch...

one of them went past everyone and past the far side of the goal for a goal kick....

Howard missed a good opportunity from one I remember which wasn't shown on the highlights - it was a true head in hands moment. (Much as Brown's miss was.)

If a bit more work can be done on them in training they could be a decent threat.

stringer on the radio did'nt seem that impressed with neilson what do we all think

I'll judge him in a few games time when he's got a few games under his belt as he's stepping up a league from the SPL so will need to get used to the game. Admittedly, whilst watching on the live internet stream, I probably had the same impression as Stringer, but as it's early on, I'm not too fussed.

Neilson generally looked a bit off the pace, but too early to judge really. This being off the pace contributed to a lack of support for N'Guessan who often looked unsure as to whether to go for it or hang back and support his right back, thus frequently being caught out of position

s for his throws, suffered through not being able to have a run up, Portman Road being so tight. I think they will be a threat in some circumstances.

He makes the front post routinely, and one early throw made level with the penalty spot in terms of distance

Definitely.

N'Guessan often got himself stuck in that position just inside our half where he wasn't posing a threat going forward and he wasn't helping out defensively either. I suppose that sort of thing will have to be coached into him. He was very hesitant when receiving the ball when it looked like he could have done something if he'd knocked it into the empty space behind their left-back and tried to run him.

Lloyd was a bit like this at times last season but he has improved no end in his positioning and you rarely see him let a full-back come forward or see Berner isolated now. Gradel also improved this over the season. Hopefully the same will happen with N'Guessan.

As for Neilson, he is very one-paced and he is not suddenly going to become Usain Bolt overnight with match practice. He will get done regularly over the season by quick wingers, I have no doubt about that. He's fully committed though and in this league, that's often more important than having lightning pace - hence why Wayne Brown has been such a success at this level.

He reminds me so much of Nils-Eric Johansson, both in his lumbering sprint and Viking hairstyle. I've got a feeling he'll be a similarly unspectacular player for us and hopefully he'll pop up with a goal as important as Nils at Preston one day.
