Tilley Posted 19 August 2009 Posted 19 August 2009 What about O'Neill? Is it too soon for him? I haven't seen him play mate, so can't comment.
jonw88 Posted 20 August 2009 Posted 20 August 2009 Morrison looks pretty good filling in at right back, when he's done it so far he's looked accomplished, and doesn't mind getting forward either. I'd be tempted to slot him in on Saturday, and replace Brown with Tunchev for once.

flanimal Posted 20 August 2009 Posted 20 August 2009 Brown has been immense in defence (no rhyme intended). As much as I think Hobbs will get better and better, Brown has been the kind of defender we've missed since Matt Elliott, or even Taggart - we got a scary hard ****er in the backline who wins everything in the air. Tunchev was and is quality, but I doubt he puts the shits into strikers the way Brown does. Let's just say, there's more than one type of Brown on the pitch when he's in the starting line-up.
potter3 Posted 20 August 2009 Posted 20 August 2009 What about O'Neill? Is it too soon for him? He looked pretty decent against Macclesfield, but they are 2 divisions lower, never wasted the ball though.
Joe. Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Cut the bloke some slack people. I'm not going to start a thread ringing the guy's praises, but he's never been as bad as a lot of people have already made out on here. He was never going to be a spectacular player when we first signed him, we all knew that. I actually think he's been a very solid right back so far, and I don't recall him making any great errors. Even last night when a couple of mis-placed passes where made by him he was back there to try and get the ball back, most of the time in which he actually succeeded. He might not be the best going forward either, but he'll always be there to support N'Guessan wherever possible. I also believe that those pair link up quite well at times down the right. I just find it odd how people manage to pick him out as a weak performer despite looking pretty secure thus far. Give him a bit of a break here, he's done a sound enough job so far.
James. Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 I alluded to this earlier in my post in the ratings thread. Agree with everything you've said Joe.
dandannieldanok Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 People, for no good reason, need a scapegoat and unfortunately for Neilson it appears to be him. Some of the comments have been ridiculous really, complete overreactions after one defeat.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 First time I saw him last night. Didn't look great but wasn't woefully bad.
Maybes Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 People, for no good reason, need a scapegoat and unfortunately for Neilson it appears to be him. Some of the comments have been ridiculous really, complete overreactions after one defeat. Aswell as Dany N'Guessan, some fags on this site ripping him to peices.
Samilktray Posted 1 September 2009 Author Posted 1 September 2009 Not impressed me both times I've seen him.
Father Ted Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Good points: -Tough tackling -Supports the winger -Half-decent throw. Bad points: -Slow -Poor crossing -Technically not great Give him time to adjust and I think he will be fine though.
Bert Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 His worst game last night by far, would still love Mr Gilbert back here ahead of him, but I'm not going to question our management team.
JimmyK Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 I thought he was very good on his debut at Ipswich, wasn't amazing last night, but I wouldn't say he did that badly.
Flynny Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Aswell as Dany N'Guessan, some fags on this site ripping him to peices. I think Neilson was okay, but I thought N'Guessan was actually woeful. I hope he was just stifled by a classy left-back but I suspect his decision making is just terrible, on the couple of occasions he was free and clear for once he played it backwards or shot instead of going for the cross he didn't manage to get in all night. (Hope I'm wrong)
whitlock Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 N'guessean didnt particularly help Neilsons performance last night.
Pricey Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 His worst game last night by far, would still love Mr Gilbert back here ahead of him, but I'm not going to question our management team. I'd have to agree with, Neilsen is solid but just nothing exciting, by no means a flop though. I liked Gilbert alot though, I would much prefer him.
davieG Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Most of us have only seen Gilbert at Division3 level so it's not that fair to compare them. Of course they have different stylesbut Gilbert had his weaknesses as well which could have been exposed more at this level.
teblin Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 I don't think he has let us down in any of the games i have seen him. He was always busting a gut to help going forward, didn't really get skinned. Few dodgy passes, but for christ sake wayne brown found touch more than Jonny wilkinson. I think Neilson is simular to brown in many ways not the best footballer, but wears his heart on his sleeve and won't often let you down, and is a solid defender. Gilbert was fast, but also not the best footballer and his pace got him out of situations that it might not in this league. Though positioning can be learnt i guess. (i liked gilbert btw)
Fox92 Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 I was going to start this thread earlier and didn't for some reason. I have seen him live at Sheffield United, Barnsley and most recently Newcastle United and Robbie Nielson has impressed me really. He has come from Scottish football and adjusted to life in England superbly. He is strong, attacking, good in the air, has good long throws and gets stuck in. To me, he is one of the best full backs we have had in the last few years after seeing him perform so far this season. (Ok, Kerrea Gilbert was on loan). He may have had some dodgy pass backs in one or two games but every footballer has that, even Stevie Gerrard gave it to Thierry Henry once at Highbury. To admit though, N'Guessan didn't help him much at Bramall Lane or St. James' Park.
Sods Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 I dont think Neilson has done a lot wrong to be honest, defensively he is a lot better then Gilbert, also gilbert on the ball was quite shocking at times.
Legend_in_blue Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 Good points:-Tough tackling -Supports the winger -Half-decent throw. Bad points: -Slow -Poor crossing -Technically not great Give him time to adjust and I think he will be fine though. I have to agree with you Father Ted. Although as far as the bad points are concerned, turning them into good points is what makes a Premiership RB. With due respect, where do we think we'll get one of those from and how do you go about attracting them to the club? Gilbert may have had pace but he was suspect defensively, which Nielson hasn't been yet. I'd rather have a RB that holds the line well and can defend, not one that bombs forward and negates his defensive duty. Give the guy a break people. He wasn't the worst performer on the pitch last night.
CKB Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 I'll give him a chance like i do all, but for my 1st time in watching him i wasn't impressed
CosbehFox Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 I am keeping relatively stum. I don't rate him. In fact I remember have a reet moan about his inability to cross as a full-back last night.
iancognito Posted 1 September 2009 Posted 1 September 2009 He didn't have a great game but the 3 times I've seen him play have all been good solid performances. This always seems to happen with our right backs though. Go back down the years and players like Grayson, Morgan and even Gary Mills who rarely put a foot wrong have gone through spells where unless they win the ball in a flamboyant sliding tackle, recover and beat four men before planting an accurate cross onto the head of our star forward, they're "shit and shouldn't be wearing the shirt. Bastard!" At Filbert Street it was understandable because the right back spent most of the game running the line in front of the whingeing bastards in the West Stand, now it just seems to be everyone chipping in. Maybe it's our fans in general. We're not happy unless we're moaning and at the moment Neilson is The New Maybury in some people's eyes.
