Guest Basildon Fox Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 I thought Hobbs and Brown were awesome tonight. I thought Brown was all over the shop in the first half but a lot better in the second half.
sdb Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 1 other thing - Andy King. Does he go about his job quietly and effectively (allowing Wellens and Oakley to 'play') or does he go missing in most games? I never, ever notice him.
LoughboroughFox Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 Not quite sure why people are bad mouthing McGivern, i thought his distribution at times was excellent. was i watching a different game???
AjcW Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 Enjoyed that very scrappy win... watched it with my mum witch was an interesting change... her main observations: 1) Pearsons hair is immaculate. 2) Reading have nice socks 3) Neilson is a(said three times) "DICKHEAD!!" Im thinking Howard and Waghorn up top friday... so so wish howard has score that goal at the end, would of done him the world of good. Also... was Kingy playing???
Tommeh Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 Who really gives a shit Re.the performance? We're fresh up from the league below after 4 years previous doing fack all in the same league. I'm absolutely over the moon with our position, the squad, manager everything...if it continues then hey you never know. Calling it "not too shabby" "poor performance" "must do better" is in my opinion ludicris. 2 points however: 1. Tv football is shite end of. It felt hideus watching that even in the pub, just a totally wowed feeling I never want to experience again. 2. Get Mcgivern out and Bruno Berner (our best and most consistant performer thus far) back in please. I really cannot understand that selection the last 2 games. Also tonight was the best I've seen Robbie Nielson, great solid display from him.
Thracian Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 1 other thing - Andy King. Does he go about his job quietly and effectively (allowing Wellens and Oakley to 'play') or does he go missing in most games? I never, ever notice him. He seemed quieter than usual today except whenever I looked for him there he was covering exactly the right position and limiting Reading's options. Even when they hit the post it was King doing just enough to hurry the striker without getting a potentially calamatous deflection. You don't get four clean sheets out of five if your defending isn't organised and while I did think we were loose at times in the first half I thought we tightened up dramatically and King's part was typically responsible especially as it seemed clear that helping keep us sound defensively was his principle role today leaving Wellens/Oakley with the greater licence.
samuel Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 An absolutely appaling show of Football.I know the cameras aren't kind to Leicester but Fook me! McGivern was dire! Weale did what was asked nicely. Wellens is not what everyone thinks. Oakley doesn't do corners. Fryatt cannot do one on ones and needs to admit he shouldn't be a banker to start! Neilson is very basic! King is a division too high! Waghorn has a little potential, not sure Sunderland will keep him! Gallagher should not be on the wing! Brown is the only reason we are deceiving! Hobbs shows why Liverpool cashed in, not a chance in the Premiership!. Campbell is a speed apart and isn't as offside as we all think! Howard must wonder why even without him, we play as if he was on the pitch! Well that was a result and a half wasn't it? The same as Blackpool, drew strength from another teams inability to score. I hope at some point soon we start to play because Nothing saps the utopian feeling we are all feeling now, that a footballing lesson!. And QPR Will dish out that lesson!

I keep meaning to watch him closely to see if he's as good as thrac says. But I just never see him, i think he sneaks off and hides in the toilets when the match starts.
Thracian Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 Oakley doesn't do corners. Oakley might not do corners especially well generally but it was his cross which Waghorn steered into the corner of the net for our winner.

maddog Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 This was easily the biggest win of the season, smash and grab, robbery at Reading. They had all the chances, we played poorly first half up top, Fryatt looking off colour for the 6th game in a row and missing 2 one on ones. Cardiff Fox called Dj for missing one against Palace, but Fryatt starts every game, and added 2 more misses to his tally. Good goalkeeping BUT he should score in those positions. Gallagher looked good, our defence were shocking and just let Reading in, we all know why they never win at home, missing all those chances against us today. Then we steal a headed goal from the shortest man on the pitch Waghorn, Howard should learn a thing or 2 because it was a class header. Possibly our 1st headed goal this season i'm not sure. Reading continue to miss chances, Howard did ok when he came on but i think Waghorn holds the ball up better than him and normally makes a better pass. Dj had another impact, such a shame he didn't get a goal again though, he looks dangerous. 3 points, 5th place, and after winning tonight i certainly believe we can win at QPR. Fook knows what the team will be, i guess maybe Morrison, Berner in and possibly Gallagher partnering Waghorn up front with Dyer on the left, although NP is more likely to start Howard with Waghorn which won't please me at all. Woo

Onion Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 very important win for us, mcgivern was a right weak link in the side. Hes lucky they didn't punish us with the amount of times he let them in and taking fryatt and wanghorn off left our attack abit lead.
GloverFox Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 It wasn't that bad and a win is a win is a win, especially away and winning when you're not at your best is exactly what you need to do to get up the table.Criticisms of the full backs is harsh IMO, I thought they both had OK (not great) games, King was a little anonymous but didn't do anything particularly wrong. Howard was very strong when he came on, Weale did everything right, Oakley was solid and did his best to ensure we held on to the ball when under pressure and Gallagher had some lovely touches. We're far too negative as a bunch of fans. I'm just very happy with the three points and very aware that in the past these were the types of games where we capitulated. Credit where it is due. great post ... totally agree ... 3 points is winning! personally thought Chris Weale was again very good and Oakley excellent .... Howard made an impact and perhaps could have been brought on for longer ... but hey, who cares ... 3 points and we're going in the right direction ... total support from me!
Salieri Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 Just back from the pub, delighted with the win. Wasn't the greatest performance but classic smash and grab. Having said that, despite all their possession i think we matched them on clear cut chances. You can dissect the performances all you like but the fact remains we have had a very sound start, and i'd like to see the stats in regards to how many managers have suffered less defeats since the start of last season. Nige has made us a tough side to beat, and fair play to him.
Legend_in_blue Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 We won the game and never left 1st gear. We didn't need to bother leaving 1st gear. We still won. Bertrand. Berty - WHO's THE BIGGER CLUB NOW FELLA? Keep the mouth shut! JOB DONE. Edgar Davids get yourself down the Walkers and sign up fella.
Hitesh Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 I've just got back from the game and what a smash and grab win that was! We did have chances ourselves but not as many as them. Their strikers were awful at finishing!! They played some nice balls through the middle and opened our defence a lot but we were lucky they cant finish! Us on the other hand showed good character and stuck to it but one thing that did concern me was the lack of control in the middle. We never used the middle men and we kept losing posesssion. I know we were away but we just didnt have the want to keep the ball - even at the end when we should have kept it in the corner! King went about his job in the DMC role but I felt he let too much through and was lacking that bite we need in a role like that. I'm not saying Davids is the answer though - far from it. We could do with another MC though as we don't have the depth and if any of those 3 get injured then we will struggle. McGiven was given a hard time and was outpaced on numerous occasions. He was done a number of times by McAnuff and then by Kebe. If you know someone is quicker than you then you need to give yourself a yard but he never did that and got done over many times! Up front, Waghorn and Fryatt did a good job I felt and just lacked the support from the midfield and then Howard did a very good job when he came on. DJ, only one thing to say - STAY ONSIDE!! He def isn't match fit and was struggling near the end, he needs more game time to be sharp. Overall, I think this win is a very good one in terms that we pick up points when we don't play well - which is what you need to do well in this league! Its two wins on the bounce too! On the other side, I feel this may hide over the cracks and we will get trounced by QPR if we play the way we do today. I feel NP knows this though and we'll see a different style on Friday. All in all, I'm really happy with the win, just felt we could have played a bit better!
BedsFox Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 King allows the others to play. Time after time his positioning is great in breaking up attacks Good sign for a holding midfielder, you hardly notice him and the team keeps a lot of clean sheets with him in the team Only a young player, going to get even better. We miss him when he doesn't play, Brown and Hobbs far more exposed Berner for McGivern please. Bruno is far more solid Oakley on the right game after game. Just doesn't work for me.
ibbosuk Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 We are not a top six side, there are MANY sides in this league that are better than us. We should have been hammered today, had we been playing QPR, we would have been beaten by 4 or 5. We look wooden and inflexible compared to most sides in this league, Oakley legs have gone he looks a shadow of the player he used to be, McGivern looks like an accident waiting to happen, I shit myself every time he touched the ball! Oh for a couple of Tom Cleverly's and a Jermaine Beckford and a Neil Mellor. We will get absolutely smashed against QPR if we play anything like we played in tonight game. Yes we are winning, but boy are we in a false position!!!
lavrentis Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 If I'm honest I didn't actually know King was playing until there was a close up on his face. Surprised me.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 If I'm honest I didn't actually know King was playing until there was a close up on his face. Surprised me. This. But that is no bad thing. He goes around his business quietly and effectively.
AjcW Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 If I'm honest I didn't actually know King was playing until there was a close up on his face. Surprised me. This. But im sure he played well as readings midfield... including the forgotten man brian howard did nothing.
martyn Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 We weren't great but lets be honest, Reading can't have played much better than that all season. As everyone else has said, McGivern was the weak link, he has some ability but his positional sense was dreadul for most of the evening and got skinned far too much. Never saw King for the 90 minutes and although he generally does go about his job quietly and mostly effectively, I thought our midfield were very poor on second balls today, any balls up to their front men which we won were invariably picked up by a Reading shirt, something which Kingy should be impacting on. Chris Weale looks Premier League class, exactly what you want in a Goalkeeper.
