Sven Goran Eriksson is making an ambitious move to sign Wigan’s out-of-favour keeper Chris Kirkland for ambitious Leicester City.

Eriksson wants to take Kirkland on loan initially but would sign him permanently if he helpes the Foxes move closer to the promotion pack during that spell.

Kirkland has been out of the Latics side for the past couple of months, playing just once in the first team when on-loan Ali Al-Habsi was ineligible to face Bolton Wanderers.

Former England cap Kirkland may be interested in the deal as he has admitted he will review his Wigan future at the end of the year if he is still on the bench.

Kirkland’s wages are among the biggest at the DW STadium and owner Dave Whelan may be keen to have them off the payroll - and to take a cash bid if Leicester make the switch permanent.

I'm happy with Weale for now.

It seems he's getting his confidence back after 3 clean sheets in 4 matches, and to disrupt that would not be beneficial for the team and the connection that is being gained with the defence. Consistency is key and unnecessary changes, as we all fully well know, don't bode well for results!

Kirkland, when fit is good enough for England so to say Weale is just as good is laughable

Agreed. No problem with Weale but before Hart Kirkland was by far the best English goalkeeper.

Kirkland would be a great asset to the squad. Weales a good keeper but lets not forget one position we had covered was left back and sven still bought in cunningham and what a worldy player he has turned out to be ahead of berner! Just a rumour as of now but imo good move..leicestershire lad as well!

Regardless of his past injury record, I think Kirkland is just about to hit his prime.

Should Wigan really let him go, we should snap him up - even though Martinez recently stated Kirkland would be "going nowhere in January".

He can be a world-class goalkeeper and what better club to get back to where he belongs than the one in his hometown Leicester?

Together with Weale, they'd make a great goalkeeping pair. Something LCFC's been missing in the past 45+ years.

Is he a Leicester fan? I know he is from Barwell and has also briefly lived in Burbage, but he also played for The Shitters and I wonder whetehr he's one of them? If he's a Leicester fan then I can see him wanting to come here and if we could get him then bang on!

I'm under the impression he's not a Leicester fan,

I could be wrong and I don't think that would stop him from wanting to join us anyway

Agreed! :)

No disrespect to everyone but you all know what my views are on Weale are anyway, so if Sven is looking to strengthen this area - then about time!

Not that it matters anyway in his thoughts but I am pretty sure he was a Liverpool fan as a boy. I think I remember him saying so when he joined them.

Everyone who joins Liverpool says that.

I think there will be better keepers available if we get promoted, he is clearly not prem quality. If we didn't have so many loanees then I would welcome him on loan, but Weale is a good keeper certainly good enough for the Championship so I don't see it as a priority at the moment.

How the bloody hell do people consider a goalkeeper who has played for liverpool and also England not to be of premiership quality?

I dispair sometimes. It beggars belief....

Lazy journalism on at least two counts.

1. it's just some journalist who has gone "oh, he's from Leicester, he's out of favour and Leicester need a keeper." It's too easy.

2. Use of the word "ambitious" twice in one sentence. Seriously, it's the kind of word that you would avoid using twice in the same paragraph if you took your writing seriously.

No thanks, I'm happy with Weale ATM , His wages are amongst the biggest at Wigan and he is way to injury prone for a goalkeeper . If he did come don't think Weale would stay around long and then if Kirkland got injured AGAIN we would be left with Fatty Logan in Goal

Weale is a decent keeper but as we continue to strengthen in other areas he will begin to look more and more like the weakest link. If the signings talked about go through we will have a premier league standard defence, an exciting midfield with Abe and King in particular capable of who knows what, and a decent attack led by an ex england international. If there is a chance to sign Kirkland now then I think we should because quality goalkeepers don't come onto the market all that often and because it would represent keeping pace with our progress in other areas.
