JmorsonLCFC Posted 28 June 2011 Posted 28 June 2011 Of all the multitude of strikers we've been linked with, Nugent is the one who excites me the least...at least since the Marlon King rumour thankfully died an early death. OK, the bloke is decent in the air and half-decent on the ball, but he's certainly not a prolific goalscorer - or someone who'll fit in well with a flexible, passing, fast moving side, which I assume Sven is trying to build. I suspect that in a few years time, history will tell that the peak of Nugent's career was a few years ago, when he did quite well for an over-achieving Preston side in the Championship. People will think the idea of him having been an England international as bizarre as Carlton Palmer, Paul Goddard etc. Now, Mackail-Smith and Jong Tae-Se running defences ragged, with the likes of Gallagher, King, Danns, Vassell etc. using the space...that does excite me. £3m for CMS is a better deal than £0 for Nugent, IMHO! well we could have both for the same price as one but still no?

The thing is, we have neither Korean guy nor CMS. Nugent for free seems a tad rosier when you compare him to our current strike force.
Alf Bentley Posted 28 June 2011 Posted 28 June 2011 well we could have both for the same price as one but still no? Same transfer price, yes, but everything suggests he wants Premier League wages, and I assume the overall budget is not unlimited...and Nugent obviously sees himself as a Premier League player, so would not be happy unless he was playing regularly....and I'm not sure he's Championship promotion standard...
MPH Posted 29 June 2011 Posted 29 June 2011 Signing a team of scousers!! Those quotes are old above though, seen them last week. Hey! Calm down!!!
Alf Bentley Posted 29 June 2011 Posted 29 June 2011 The thing is, we have neither Korean guy nor CMS. Nugent for free seems a tad rosier when you compare him to our current strike force. Nor do we have Nugent, so they are all "potential signings" compared to our current strike force - and Nugent is the worst of the three, in my opinion (you may disagree). Neither Chong nor CMS may end up coming here, but nor may Nugent - he's a free agent who's currently opting not to re-sign for Pompey, having previously failed to agree terms with Burnley after going there on loan, and is yet to sign for us...suggests he's hoping for a Premier League club, maybe? I reckon Nugent would be a big step back compared to Yakubu & co, when presumably we're hoping to have at least as much threat as last season... We might get the odd good free signing (e.g. Danns), but will probably have to pay a large fee for at least 1 striker.

Nugent isn't a bad option though, especially not for free, and as long as he doesn't demand too high wages (as has been reported) he would certainly fit into our squad. As we need at least two or maybe even 3 strikers, having one that doesn't command a huge fee, like Maynard or CMS, will be quite handy. The fact he hasn't yet appeared interested in any champ offers is a fair point. I suppose he must be keeping his options open to see what opportunities materialize, who can blame him. The same can be said about Yakubu. Still im sure 'ole :sge: will have a few more ticks up his sleeve yet!
Bezzanator89 Posted 29 June 2011 Posted 29 June 2011 Nugent has a goal-scoring average of 0.26 per game (80 goals form 303). Me = Not convinced.
Jimmy Posted 29 June 2011 Posted 29 June 2011 Nugent has a goal-scoring average of 0.26 per game (80 goals form 303). Me = Not convinced. take out the premier league games and its a hell of a lot better
Bezzanator89 Posted 29 June 2011 Posted 29 June 2011 take out the premier league games and its a hell of a lot better Not really. Now 0.28 goals a game when Premier League games are discounted.
Liamlcfc1 Posted 29 June 2011 Posted 29 June 2011 Looks like Bert is right again IanStringerBBC Ian StringerWell Foxes fans, I reckon tomorrow could see some business at the club. Lots of names, Nugent looks nailed on and hopefully defenders
sphericalfox Posted 29 June 2011 Posted 29 June 2011 Looks like Bert is right again Yes but is it going to be massive? Now that he's back off his hollibobs, can we look to a degree of contrition or simply more of the same old same old?
Walshy5 Posted 29 June 2011 Posted 29 June 2011 Looks like Bert is right again Its stringer so i wont hold my breath!
Clazie Posted 29 June 2011 Posted 29 June 2011 Nugent has a goal-scoring average of 0.26 per game (80 goals form 303). Me = Not convinced. Good solid centre back. I liked him last season so I'm gonna trust his opinion here and agree.
roblcfc84 Posted 29 June 2011 Posted 29 June 2011 14 goals last year isn't bad, especially when you consider he wasn't playing through the centre week in week out. Very good record for Preston. Think this signing could be much stronger than people think. More to being an attacker than goals per game ratio.

Agreed, Also people seem to forget he is still only 26, dont believe he has lost all his ability and with a little confidence back could be amazing at this level! Definitely got some years ahead of him
jonno24 Posted 29 June 2011 Posted 29 June 2011 Reliably Informed that this will be comfirmed tomorrow. Also that we have bid for Ben Mee and Man City have accepted offer.

jonno24 Posted 29 June 2011 Posted 29 June 2011 There was originally talk of a double deal for Cunningham and Mee but Doubts over Cunninghams leg scuppered that deal. But it may happen in January. Not sure if Mee will be unveiled tmoz but have been told this is nailed on. Also Rommedahl,Mills,SWP,Maynard = No goes
