Mark Lawrenson makes an amusing comment about Leicester

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson said on BBC 5 live Sport on Saturday afternoon that Leicester City are the only team who look like they are trying to win the Premier League title this season.

Lawrenson, who played for Liverpool from 1981 to 1988, made the comments following Leicester’s stunning 3-2 victory over Everton away from home at Goodison Park in the league on Saturday afternoon.

“The pace is everywhere in the Leicester team,” said the former Republic of Ireland international defender on BBC 5 live SPORT. “Once they run at you they find space and they are so very difficult to play against.

"It's that pace on the break, and their finishing, which is why they are top of the league at the moment. And I think they look like the only team trying to win it!”

The same day that Leicester won, Manchester United, who are also challenging for the Premier League title this season, went down 2-1 to relegation-threatened Norwich City at Old Trafford.

Chelsea’s chances of retaining the title have long gone, while Manchester City, who have arguably the best squad of all the English teams, lost 2-1 to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in North London on Monday night.

Leicester, who are currently two points clear at the top of the standings, have been most consistent side of all the title challengers.

Claudio Ranieri’s team are not expected by many to go all the way, but this season has been so unpredictable that it would not wise to write off their chances now.

He's changed his tune, i'm worried.

The Prem’s rubbish, guys

Can we please abandon the idea that there is anything positive about the current state of the PL? It’s like watching a prolonged FA Cup third round upset: miserable.

As an exercise in pure entertainment, perhaps the current league is more entertaining than the mid and late 00s when Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool comfortably finished in the top 4 (although I’m not convinced the PL has ever been more entertaining than when Utd won it by 18 points. It was glorious). Isn’t it wonderful that, thanks to the PL’s unmeritocratic distribution of television revenues, the likes of Leicester and Stoke can spend money they only have because they piggyback on the commercial success and profile of Utd and others? Well no, it isn’t.

Never mind that clubs are spending money they shouldn’t have and haven’t earnt. From a simple sporting perspective, the competitiveness of the PL is a disaster. The relentlessness and physicality of the competition guarantees that year after year, tournament after tournament, English clubs and players are exhausted come spring, and therefore unable to compete with the better rested squads of Barca, Madrid, Bayern etc.

The combination of this exclusion from major continental honours, and a league in which competition is physical and protection still limited, therefore dissuades elite players from coming to or staying in England. Forgive me if, after Cantona, Veron, Stam, Ronaldo, Tevez et al., I’m just not that impressed by the success of Ighalo, Jamie Vardy, Jason Puncheon or Riyadh Mahrez.

The standard to which English clubs should aspire is consistent excellence in European competition (like three CL finals in four years). Not to be competing with Leicester, Bournemouth and Crystal Palace, and celebrating a league for its lack of quality is frankly obtuse.

Here in Italy there was a decent 5 minute piece on Leicester City on 'Quelli Che il Calcio" the main Sunday afternoon football programme that runs in parallel with the Serie A games. Good interview with Claudio, a look at some of the goals and a brief butchers at the training facilities. Very positive piece. All the main papers have been carrying articles about us, the dream that might come true, etc etc. We are very much in the public domain in Italy. Long may it continue!

A lot (most?) people on this planet are extremely (individually) subjective - without realising it more often than not.

In other words - if they don't like something, then it's crap. The problem then comes when they mistake their not liking it for it being objectively crap :P

I can sympathise with opinions that the top teams aren't as strong as they were - anyone who seriously thinks they are is kidding themselves, but what a load of horrible shite that article really is. Mentality of entitlement at its finest. Don't blame anyone but yourselves for the fact your reckless spending has caught up with you.
