Bert Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 Our best performance of the season for me. Brighton were never in it bar that miss from CMS. What impressed me was that we'd clearly done our homework on Brighton, and stuck to the task. We kept a high tempo and made Brighton look poor.
Webbo Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 I thought Brighton were a dirty side today, I wonder if they're always like that?
Drift Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 Was at the game today... Great all round performance. Couldn't understand the disallowed goal. If we'd won the free kick why couldn't we have the advantage? Beckford took the "goal" really well. Matt Mills won pretty much every header and had a good game. Beckford had a great first half, was a bit quiet in the second half. Vassell had a great game, gave them loads of problems. The passing was tight, and makes a change to have almost no defensive mishaps. The few mistakes made we recovered from and got the ball back quickly. Not much for Kasper to do apart from one punch out and a couple of catches. Mackail Smiths miss from about 3 yards was funny. So overall very happy. Was disappointed by the lack of lap of honour from Pantsil though!

We made a good side look very average today

Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 Good win and deserved, but lets not carried away. Improvements can be made still defensively, but they looked more organised and I'm delighted with a clean sheet. Sven got his selection bang on and finally we played 442! Brighton were a good side and thats a valuable three points.
Drift Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 Are you talking about the disallowed goal? If you are that was Peltier not Beckford. Then I stand corrected, thought it was Beckford. Oh also forgot to say. Did anyone else see the Brighton #20 taking a pee whilst warming up? He was crouching down pretending that he was stretching, but you could see a stream of water coming out of his shorts! Dirty git.
Wymsey Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 Passing was much better. Wellens is off the track at times. Abe should be in the team more. He's read the game very well today. Mills- Still not convinced; seems to me, he was limping even before the game slightly.. Kasper's kicking contribution was yet again naff. Much prefer Peltier than Pantsil, but Pantsil also played well when he came on. Bamba - Made me worried again but he's done alright and consistent throughout the match. Their goalie pissed me off hogging for the ball for a minute then finally passing it to their defence.. Atmosphere was alright I suppose..
Ozwin Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 First half we were dog shite. Second half we came out a different side and totally outclassed them. If they're the best team in the division then **** me sideways. Sven got it tactically spot on today, the way we pressed from the front was great to watch, seeing Brighton have no ideas or plan B was great to see, it actually looked like we knew what we were doing for once. That bit where their keeper didn't know what to do with the ball and our strikers wouldn't close him down said everything to me, we weren't going to sabotage the gameplan just because everyone was getting the arse. Loved it. Also how good is Gelson Fernandez? Literally got an engine like a monster truck, he was everywhere breaking up play and being a nuisance. Great player. Loved how he pulled Paintsil over the the kop at the end and proper went for it.
Corky Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 At last! We've had a performance that has lasted longer than one half. We were full of commitment and endeavour and vitally didn't sit back on our lead. We created by far the better chances and should've won by more. Sven got the selection and formation right, Peltier in at right back and Abe for Danns. Brighton started okay but we got on top and dominated, and a baffling decision to disallow a goal could've upset us. Thankfully it didn't. What a good goal it was too, Vassell sent in a beauty of a cross and Yuki's desire won the day, great header. We weren't really hanging on at the end pleasingly. Vassell and Beckford were excellent, Bamba had Mackail-Smith in his pocket and Mills showed much improvement along with Konchesky. Not impressed with Brighton, very cynical and couldn't cope with Beckford so decided just to kick and trip him. Southampton will be up there, not sure about Brighton. God win today, need to build on it now.
Wymsey Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 Can I just say Derby are in talks over a loan deal for Oakley. Set to be finalised by end of next week. (Really)
thybluefox Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 Management have come in for a lot of stick recently for not getting tactics right. Today was different though, high line stopping them building from the back, and then we were winning every high ball in defence. Also closing them down and stopping them passing. Got to keep playing like that now though.
Webbo Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 First half we were dog shite. No we weren't. After Peltier had his goal disallowed around 15 minutes we totally dominated.
Thracian Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 Radio referred to this being the first 90 minute performance of the season by City and I wouldn't argue. As for mocking the Sven critics I'd say City did a lot to react to that criticism and prove them right. a) We closed the opposition down quickly and restricted the service to their ever-dangerous strikers. b) Our full-backs were a revelation compared with previous games offering stacks of support and a fair bit of attitude. c) The "kamikaze's" mentioned in relation to MON were relaunched with Mills, Bamba, Beckford, and King all trying to make their presence known at set pieces - a threat that can be developed considerably, especially when Nugent returns. d) Those set pieces were slightly improved and Konchesky in particular was unlucky to just miss the target with the keeper beaten. e) King was back in a starting role and, with the full-backs supporting, there were passes everywhere allowing us to retain possession far better. f) Effort was made to drive forward into the box even when we were noticably tiring, with King and Vasssell partularly determined. g) We competed for everything. h) We played 4-4-2. That's the two top teams beaten and there was clear enough evidence today that if we do play a hard-presssing, fast passing game we can beat everyone in this league if we show some belief. Can't say I agree with Radio Leicester making Vassell man of the match. The bloke played well, delivered a great cross for Abe's goal and was a constant threat. But for me Bamba was MoM because he had such a difficult opponent in Mackail-Smith and restricted him to one serious chance that I can recall. Watching CMS's movement I cannot imagine why Sven supposedly changed his mind about the bloke. He's so hard to mark because he never stops still and is forever making the most intelligent of runs, changing direction at pace and giving defenders nightmares trying to keep an eye on him. Bamba responded by winning every personal dual - and doing so fairly so as not to concede daft free-kicks. He also made a brilliant last ditch clearance to save a really dangerous situation and still managed to pose a threat up front for what was to an outstanding all-round performance. Brilliant. Mills, though not at his best, helped out on one particular occasion when CMS seemed to have lost everyone and was waiting for a close range header. Thankfully, Mills had judged the flight path better and was just able to leap high enough to clear. Lots of pluses, lots of good performances. One points-saving save from Schmiechel, excellent involvement and accuracy from King together with a couple of shots and a couple or breakthroughs that might easily have produced goals. Altogether a definite 8/10 performance with some credit due to everyone. As for the referee disallowing our opener at least he dreportedly had the decency to apologise to Peltier. But how do they make such a decision when the rules are so clear? Players get punished for such minor infringements but referees make major cock-ups and get away with it. And when will they start to be consistent?
ramadaone Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 Not very ofeten we totally dominate a team physically but we did that today all over the park - can't think of a single 50/50 we lost out on which was great to see. Brighton were ok but are fighting way above their weight and Southampton are a much better team Surely 4 4 2 is now here to stay ?

I love his attitude. Don't stop all game.
dpjfox Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 I assume we had a "diamond midfield", who played where?
Brown Fox Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 Konchesky finally showed us what he can do today. When we bought him I was really happy because I thought he'd be solid and reliable and today he finally was. Mainly because he had support back with Abe whereas in other games he's been isolated. Free kicks weren't too bad either!

Been missing in every game up to today.

Cant say as I agree totally - first half we let the keeper throw or kick out to the full backs and you could see Sven going mad - especially when their keeper kept if for what seemed like 5 mins with no one closing him down - second half we made the keeper kick it and we won virtually everything and as you say made Brighton look poor

Thing is we won everything in the air because they had small attackers, it wouldn't have been so one sided if the opposition had a big striker to win the ball from a goal kick. Can't really moan at all today which is disappointing so I'll just have to moan about the weather instead.. It's $hit!
Happy Fox Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 Very pleasing performance all the players performed throughout the 90 minutes, we could have scored more goals, overall a fantastic game and the start of great things to come
Number 6 Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 Yuki was kind of the forgotten man, put in a nice reminder to us all today.
