GLC Posted 6 March 2012 Posted 6 March 2012 Sven-Goran Eriksson is still convinced he could have got Leicester City into the Premier League. The Swede spoke yesterday for the first time since he was sacked in October after just 13 league games of the current campaign. Sven-Goran Eriksson • • And Eriksson said he still believes City could have challenged for promotion had he been given more time. The 64-year-old said he felt he had spent the money of City's Thai owners wisely but, having been given more than £10million to recruit 12 new players last summer, he admits he should have been more successful in the short-term. However, he still believes that City can gate-crash the play-offs under Nigel Pearson. "I was happy there," said Eriksson, who looked relaxed and refreshed as he met the Mercury at the London Hilton in Mayfair. "I liked the club, the people and the city, and the players. "The results were not as good as we wanted, but it was a good time. "I should have been more successful, I think. I am disappointed to finish the job too early, but that is life. "I would probably do some things differently if I could do it again, but I can't, so there is no point having regrets. "I thought at the time we could still get promotion and I still think it. I still think they have the possibility of reaching the play-offs. It always takes time when you make so many changes, but that is football. "I think we spent the money wisely, most of it was well spent. "If you take the goalkeeper, Kasper Schmeichel, some of the defenders we took in and the midfielders, and David Nugent is scoring goals for fun. "But the problem was the same as it always is in football – results. "I think, unfortunately, with Leicester, the whole season the club hasn't been able to win five or six in a row. "It was always up and down, and that was the main problem." Eriksson remained popular with the vast majority of the City fans when he was sacked and thanks them for their support. "The fans were fantastic to me and I thank them, even if it is late now," he said. "Sooner or later they will be back (in the Premier League) and I hope sooner because, if the owners continue to invest, and not just in the players but in the club, they will get there. "They have to start to win regularly, but they still have the chance. "The Championship did surprise me last season, but I knew what it was about this season. It is a tough league, very competitive, but I liked it. "It was a shame when it was over."
Trouble Decker Posted 6 March 2012 Posted 6 March 2012 I honestly thought that Sven underestimated the Championship and it came back to bit him just where it hurts, he panicked and bought everything that moved within reason. Pearson said it all when he said "i build a team,i don't buy one" Maybe Sven would do a good job taking over a very good Premiership team but i wouldnt trust him to build one again
Jace Posted 6 March 2012 Posted 6 March 2012 I think he would of done given time but like Pearson you can't just buy it in a season it takes time to develop watched the documentary on QPR last night and they struggled for ages with money Sven brought some class players to the club.
Heskey2011 Posted 6 March 2012 Posted 6 March 2012 hardly any better under Pearson than under sven so i don't know how people can say Sven was rubbish and then praise NP, end of the day if / when we get promoted, there is no way Pearson will be in charge then we'll be looking for another Sven (probs MHughes) And on NP not buying a team - he play wellens regardless why... because he bought him.
Libertine Dream Posted 6 March 2012 Posted 6 March 2012 I think you're wrong Svennis. We stand a much better chanve with NP Short term and Long term, we should never have pushed him out in the first place.
cc_star Posted 6 March 2012 Posted 6 March 2012 Spent too much money for too little results, his points per game was enough for mid-table as with his ppg the gap would have widened with each passing week. Could he have turned it around, who knows but the players looked liked they'd stopped responding so the likelihood might have been that it actually got worse. Individuals are better than when he arrived although results prove as a team they weren't as good. Anyway no point dwelling in the past, we're on an upward curve now & with a manager who won't risk the existence of the club Onwards & upwards!
Happy Fox Posted 6 March 2012 Posted 6 March 2012 I thank Sven for bringing those players in but that is all, he couldn't motivate them for a toffee, NP seems to be doing this and results have steadily improved.
_Fatboyslow_ Posted 6 March 2012 Posted 6 March 2012 Shame he did not spill the beans on what was said that resulted in him to leaving ?

Guest Col city fan Posted 6 March 2012 Posted 6 March 2012 Sven just on talk sport now... He's simply trying to get himself back into the shop window IMO.

Would rather have him as England manager for the Euros than Pearce, I hate to admit that given i'm patriotic and want an Englishmen in charge but Pearce is a goober as a manager.

I think Sven is probably sniffing.. And for the Chelsea job too I would guess. Nope... I stand corrected, He's just said he ain't on the short list for the Chelsea job..

Fox92 Posted 6 March 2012 Posted 6 March 2012 Sven spent lots of money, too much maybe, where as Nigel is more tight with our budget. I'd rather have a manager like that. Additionally, Sven changed the team on a consistant basis (look at when he dropped Vitor after he scored two goals at Glanford Park) for my liking and in the end, having spent lots of money, we didn't get results, but more than that, the team didn't look motivated and sometimes not even organised. Don't understand the love in either, he was our manager for a short while and didn't achieve anything. I don't see him as anything more. Would rather have Pearson as manager anyday.
Thracian Posted 6 March 2012 Posted 6 March 2012 Inconsequential and largely indefensible claptrap. A play-offs place is still highly unlikely but at least Pearson seems to have balanced the team better and in more positions, They are also looking more threatening as a unit with each player looking as if he at least knows what he's supposed to be doing. Seven wins out of 10 has improved confidence too and I saw no great signs of that under Sven - or of many other things.

Looking back, I'm glad we got rid. Especially after seeing the financial year results!

Pearson spent additional money on Morgan, Drinkwater and Marshall (all three of which weren't exactly cheap). So, in that regard, he stretched the budget even further. As for Sven spending too much money, that remains to be seen. After all, he was given the money, so it wasn't just his decision to buy "big". I thought Johnson was on the brink of match fitness (but that was just as Pearson arrived), Konchesky, regardless of his wages, has been immense so far, Beckford seems to have found the spot, Danns is playing better, etc. etc. And just wait until Vassell is back. The only player that Eriksson brought in and who hasn't lived up to his potential (yet) is Mills. I think he should've been given more time, but now all of my theoretical approach remains hypothetical. He is gone. I wish he was still here, but I've got to live with the fact that he's no more at Leicester.
Corky Posted 6 March 2012 Posted 6 March 2012 Sven just on talk sport now... He's simply trying to get himself back into the shop window IMO. Or maybe, given he was England manager and they were talking about it, he was qualified to discuss it? I disagree with him on this, we weren't going up under Sven.
yorkie1999 Posted 6 March 2012 Posted 6 March 2012 Apart from mills, i don't think he spent too much. What is their value now? i bet kasper is worth a hell of a lot more than 1million, someone should add up the team value now and compare it to what we paid. If Nugent gets 20 goals this season, which is looking likely, he must be worth 2.5 - 3 million and considering we were looking at strikers for 8-9 million pounds, we must be quids in.
Saxondale Posted 6 March 2012 Posted 6 March 2012 Despite what he says, he couldn't get the tactics right for this league. Can't see how it would have improved much with time. Not to mention the fact that the players appeared not to be particularly motivated under him.
