Saxondale Posted 27 March 2012 Posted 27 March 2012 So, drawing with the Florist has taken the wind out of our sails a bit but, strangely, the table isn't looking too bad. Bring on the an away day at the dump that is London Road, where Sean St Ledger learned his trade and ruffled a few feathers doing it. 3-0 Leicester. About time we stuffed these lot.

Posh really are so poor, will be so pissed if we dont win there.
AKCJ Posted 27 March 2012 Posted 27 March 2012 Cardiff play Millwall at home. Brighton and Middlesborough play each other at Brighton (draw please). Hull play Cov at home. Leeds play Watford at home. West Ham play Reading at home (interesting game regarding autos). Blackpool play Southampton at home. All teams nearest to us play at home. This is a must win game for me.

acooling08 Posted 28 March 2012 Posted 28 March 2012 Must win game. I despair at people still wanting Bamba to play in midfield. Yes he shows glimpses of skill and passion, but he is just not right for the position. I remember at least 3 occassions tonights when he gave the ball away needlessly which put us under pressure. He is also definintely not the player we need there for creating oppurtunities. He is too bumbling and clumsy to set up chances. He also gives away quite a few fouls. Same team as Forest but with Wellens/King in midfield for Bamba. Please Nigel, play 4-4-2. Nugent and Beckford had NOTHING tonight with the formation we played.
Out Foxed Posted 28 March 2012 Posted 28 March 2012 goals galore. i agree about the bamba comment in terms of giving possession away. but there was also numerous dangerous situations he saved us from with his tackles.

That's because he's a defender so you expect him to win tackles! He isn't bad, obviously he's in a position he isn't specialised in. Can't believe that when we have midifielders fit to play, they'd rather have a central defender! A defender in midifield is even more desperate than bringing on Steve Howard.

I thought you were describing Wellens there People are so impatient players need time to adapt to a position they've not played in for a long time or with played the current players. It's like when we sign some one new there is an expectation of instant integration and success.

Whilst far from perfect, I thought Bamba was far more effective than Drinkwater on the night, for whatever reason I thought he (Drinkwater) played like Wellens with a haircut, slow, wasteful and lacking in energy. What is it about our midfielders.......

What is it about our midfielders....... You really do need to get to games. Drinkwater had no energy last night? You're so far off the mark there it's starting to become almost eerie Dave my man..
marbelladave Posted 28 March 2012 Posted 28 March 2012 You may well be right Col, but I did watch the game on a very decent stream (you have to register) and I thought Drinkwater was ponderous last night. Given his partner he really needed to control midfield and provide our attacking fulcrum but I saw no evidence of that. Sure he ran about a bit but there was no snap to his game. The only time I recall us breaking forward at pace was with Bamba, maybe our front 4 were not showing for the ball but for the home side our attacks were powderpuff. Mind you, I think it does show the difference of perception that you get from being at the game compared to even fairly decent TV.

To be fair Dave I was only commenting on your 'lack of energy' observation. I consider Drinky as a very energetic young player, and will come to replace Wellens because of this IMO. It was difficult for him last night. He was getting himself into space lots of times but wasn't getting the ball enough because, for all Big Sols strength and endeavour, he obviously hasn't had any time to develop an understanding of Drinkwaters positioning. Very often, the ball was coming out wide when it should have been slipped through the middle more. And I maintain that the lack of runs from the front men resulted in very few options for Drinky to exploit, thus forcing him to turn and to play it sideways again. I think the forum remains split on this from what I can read. Some suggest that it's the fault of the 'midfield players' who are not sufficiently creative. Others, like myself, suggest that the options going forward are not sharp enough, the runs aren't clever enough, which thwart midfield creativity or, at least, don't allow it enough. And last nights tactic of lumping the ball into the box for Nuge or Becks to get their head on it did not work. The Florist central defence and Camp, gobbled up everything that came their way. The key to unlocking stubborn defences is a double edged thing.. It necessitates creativity from the attack minded players, but, just as importantly, effort and guile from the strikers to earn themselves space. Last night, unfortunately, we had neither.
chris_lcfc_85 Posted 28 March 2012 Posted 28 March 2012 Despite what people say, we missed Wellens' bite and drive last night from midfield. For me, he has to come back in. I'd like to see Bamba push more from midfield with Wellens sitting. That way, Bamba can create and get at people, he looked so good/skilful on the ball at times and has pace to get forward. His attributes in midfield are better for attacking than defending! I do believe in Drinkwater, think he's gonna be class for us but, for now, i'd ease him in! Needs to be 4-4-2 as well with Nugent back up top with Beckford
marbelladave Posted 28 March 2012 Posted 28 March 2012 Col. Certainly not knocking Drinkwater, it was a difficult night, bit of a patched up team and a determined Forest. To win, that we really needed was some real energy first half and a goal but we started slowly and were back to the long ball well before half time. Strange, but the ability of NFP's teams to 'get it done' that was so evident in his first spell as manager simply does apply to our current line up, and it is this that failure that I often descibe as a 'lack of intensity'...... We only really looked dangerous when we broke quickly and that only happened two or three times, the rest of the time was the usual City nonsense, pass the ball about until the defence was really well set and composed, then launch it forward........

Hey... nothing is more desperate than bringing Howard on This is a must win though if we dont win this the gap will be a lot bigger come Saturday evening. and If we cant put away teams such as Forest and Petoborugh we dont deserve to be going up.
Corky Posted 28 March 2012 Posted 28 March 2012 Need to win to keep the season going in all reality. Going to be good watching us from a terrace again.
philce Posted 28 March 2012 Posted 28 March 2012 We still played sideways, so it isnt all Wellens fault!
squidsworth Posted 28 March 2012 Posted 28 March 2012 Again it was a case of a team came to shut up shop, and we failed to break them down. Last night was tedious in the extreme, a fairly average first half was followed by a seriously dull second half. For me Nugent looks completely knackered, and has been struggling to get in games lately. Becks is also blowing hot and cold, but last night it was Lloyds inability to finish when more or less clean through that cost us. If that had gone in, we would have forced Forest to open up and I think we could have then exploited the space. Most of the attacking play we did have came from the wings, but the standard of crossing was awful, constantly hitting the first man or completely missing everyone! The same was true of our set pieces. I thought DD struggled, I dont think he is the finished article at all, and looked very exposed without someone more familiar by his side. I will be relieved if Wellens is back on Sat, we really need him whilst Danns is out. At least we're still in touch, though it could well be we're 6 points off the pace, due to Bhams game in hand, so 2 wins against posh and donny are a must for me. Also 3 of the next 4 are away (posh, ipswich, millwall) - so I think for sure we'll know our fate by the end of these. And I dont think it will be good news, as we rarely win away and all the teams we play in the next 4 are in the bottom half of the table!
Craig Posted 28 March 2012 Posted 28 March 2012 If we stay within 4 points of the play-offs on Saturday next weekend is the weekend we'll make our move; the fixtures look very decent for us next Friday/Saturday.

cc_star Posted 28 March 2012 Posted 28 March 2012 I thought DD struggled, I dont think he is the finished article at all He's not, he's a young lad who will grow into the role & will improve the more he plays. He's at the right age to have a long career with us & give us his best years. He needs our support throughout, much like everyone else does really.
????? Posted 28 March 2012 Posted 28 March 2012 I really hope vassell is in the squad for this, him and dyer wide in a 433 would be immense. But cant see nuge or Beckford being dropped IMO.
