By some Unions, many skilled trade, unions didnt strike, and were against Scargill, and the harbour unions. Somehow forgot in the melle of confusion, often conveniently. Since, the labour party has been its own worst enemy, not one I would ever have voted for.

Blair took it far to the right.they too let the midlands, the north and Scotland down.

Its just a bloody shame ( for the Scots) that the yes vote politics, including their Whitepaper, have not shown a honest defined platform for the interim period, or near future definite necessities. You would think its a coverate move from the Conservatives, to blow any indepence out of the water.

The vows our leaders made, if NO, will not find clear air.So the Scots are bu#gered if they do and bu#gered if they dont.

I'm not sure of this point fuchs. Joe Gormley was the president of the NUM at the time, I met him seemed like decent bloke.

I think the fact that the skilled Unions were not a part of it is irrelevant, what defined the ousting of James Callaghan was the dire straits the country was in when the streets were piled high with garbage, the dead couldn't be buried and hospitals went uncleaned. That was just a few of the inconveniences we experienced.

I guess this isn't the real topic here but the SNP didn't replace the government with Thatcher, it was Callaghan's ineptitude and a weak TUC who did that.

He didn't have to say it though in the context of the speech he gave, I imagine a lot of his members weren't particularly happy with him stating such things in an effort to bend over to the Jocks.

Come on Matt, he was always going to be asked the question 'would a yes vote be beneficial to your party?', and he'd have been very silly to say 'yeah hopefully' or 'no comment', better for him to say without being prompted that it's the country he cares about. I'm not saying he doesn't care more about the country than the party, but him saying it isn't proof, he's a politician.

I''ve voted.

Confident but not certain of a No.

Those saying it's good natured are talking through their hole, by the way.

Unlike in an election, many people have plastered their homes, cars, Twitter and Facebook feeds with posters, stickers, propaganda.

A lot of it demonizes the other side.

As such, many people have taken a look at their neighbours, colleagues, friends and thought 'Ah, you're one of THEM'.

It doesn't help that the Yes side have been particularly shouty and in your face. A lot of them won't let you hold your views in peace, they want to challenge you to justify why you are for No.

Despite their evangelical zeal, I've had tell a few to leave me the fvck alone.

Festering resentment will remain.

And that's just up here. Goodness knows how Scotland has damaged its relationship with the rest of the UK, even if it is a No.

I have no problem with University being free is the country can afford it, Scotland clearly can't and how the English people haven't caused uproar that they have to pay for it whilst at the same time being taxed so Scottish students can do it for free is quite staggering. If they were anyone but students they would probably do.

As someone going to uni next year now, the bit that annoys me is that students from the EU also get it free in Scotland and students from Wales and NI get reduced tuition fees in Scotland but the English have to pay the full 9k still.

Fair enough they get given a pot and cut college places to fund free uni and I also don't really mind too much about tuition fees but to me the scottish system is deeply unfair on English students.

Yep, well done Salmond. Whatever happens, he's created a generation of Scots that will hate half of their own population.

Myself, I'm hoping for a no vote for no other reason thatn to upset Salmond, who is one of the most sanctimonious, preposterous, bullheaded politicians to ever walk the halls of power... and that's saying something.

If you vote yes, are you a racist?

No.

Whilst there are 'chip on the shoulder' anti English in the ranks, they have been shouted down during the campaign, for fear of scaring off potential voters.

I fear such sentiment will not be shouted down if No wins narrowly.

Apparently the Yes vote was leading, but then all the No voters finished work.

Real anti English racism is pretty rare to be honest. In fact there's too many English up there for it to really take hold anyway.

Agree that overt anti English racism is quite rare, but the Yes campaign has relentlessly criticised 'Westminster' and some will see that as code for 'England and the English.'

It can't fail to have had some effect.

My Grandfather was a proud Scot, he was a Warrant Officer in the Scots Gurads. Fierce defender of Scottish traditions and history, yet he was also very proud to serve his Queen and immensely proud of the British Army. He would be saddened to hear some of the rhetoric flying both ways in tnis argument.

I think Salmond has misled his supporters, he has promised that they can have their cake and eat it, not one has he admitted there may be some very difficult obstacles and barriers. They are expecting utopia if the Yes campaign wins, yet I believe it will be something rather less.

Had a few hours kip and I'm ready to go through the night.

I love election nights, so enthralling if you're into this game.

I'm staying up myself.

How's this going to happen btw? Will there be regular updates on how things are progressing like they do with constituencies in GE's? Or will we just be waiting six hours from midnight for one announcement? I'm something of a newcomer to these referendum thingys  :P

Will be similar to the GE. Council to council with results coming in then a full result expected about 6am.

Just to reinforce my earlier comment that the suggestion that it is "good natured" is a misguided myth - search "Flag Burning" on Twitter - Union Jack being burned in several places in Scotland today...
