davieG Posted 6 August 2012 Posted 6 August 2012 Warnock knows! Leeds United: Peltier’s a star of future - Warnock Published on Monday 6 August 2012 08:30 Neil Warnock claimed he could see shades of England international Kyle Walker in Lee Peltier after wrapping up a deal to sign Peltier from Leicester City. The defender joined Leeds United for an undisclosed fee – thought to be worth as much as £800,000 – ahead of Saturday’s pre-season friendly against Preston North End, with Warnock winning his long battle to bring a new right-back to Elland Road. Twenty-five-year-old Peltier became United’s prime target after a shortage of funds scuppered an attempt to sign Joel Ward from Portsmouth in May, and Warnock admitted he had landed a player who he believed was out of his price range at the start of the summer. The recent sale of Robert Snodgrass to Norwich City helped to make the transfer possible and Warnock paid Peltier a glowing tribute by likening him to Walker, a player he took on loan to Queens Park Rangers while the London club were in the Championship and Walker was out of favour at Tottenham Hotspur. Walker made 20 league appearances for QPR and has gone on to break into the senior side at Spurs and the England national team, and Warnock vowed to inspire a big improvement in Peltier after tying the defender to a three-year deal. The United manager said: “I liked Joel Ward, I won’t pretend otherwise, and he was my target but I love Peltier too. I was surprised that we were able to afford him and we’ve worked so hard behind the scenes on this deal. “He’s a young player who’s full of energy and talent – an exciting player to sign. “I look at what I did with Kyle Walker and I’m not saying Lee can be the same level of player but I do see a lot of attributes that Kyle had. “When Kyle came to me at QPR in the Championship, he wasn’t really wanted at Tottenham. He wasn’t thought of as a top player. I’d like to think I helped him with that and I think I can help Lee too.†Peltier was a regular part of Leicester’s line-up last season but was seen as expendable by manager Nigel Pearson, despite finishing the term in Pearson’s starting line-up. United and City agreed a fee last week and Peltier passed a medical at Thorp Arch on Saturday morning after negotiating the severance of his contract at Leicester.
dave_the_fox Posted 6 August 2012 Posted 6 August 2012 Warnock has obviously got mixed up with when we had naughton
somebum Posted 6 August 2012 Posted 6 August 2012 Nothing special, good bit of business as well. Thanks for everything though Pelts. Mind blowing. How much did he take in wages? "Thanks"?!?!?!? **** me
KFS Posted 6 August 2012 Posted 6 August 2012 Thats the spirit, liken him to a player who was 4 years younger when you took him under your all mighty apprenticeship scheme. The difference with Pelts is that he's supposed to be nearing his peak, and that description of him above just simply isn't right. Don't know who you think you've signed, Neil?
Master Fox Posted 6 August 2012 Posted 6 August 2012 It's amazing what horse shit managers and football clubs feed the supporters. A lot of Leeds fans will believe this statement to be true. To me this reads as "Sorry, we're too shit to attract decent players and have to settle for rejects from a mid-table championship club". Warnock has lost his marbles
Guest Col city fan Posted 6 August 2012 Posted 6 August 2012 It's typical Warnock isn't it? Bigging up his new signing? Is anyone really surprised at this? What would you rather he say: 'I've just spent 800k on a defender who is actually pretty average so don't expect much from him'? It's Warnock being Warnock..
marty78 Posted 6 August 2012 Posted 6 August 2012 Mind blowing. How much did he take in wages? "Thanks"?!?!?!? **** me You find it mind blowing that when someone leaves a job someone says thanks? You would make a great employer. As for Warnock - manager in "I am pleased with my signing" shocker.
Grey Fox Posted 6 August 2012 Posted 6 August 2012 Talk about putting pressure on the player. Warnock comparing him to one of the best right backs in the country. I hope for Pelts sake he can live up to it. I'm not so sure he will though. He failed to work under the pressure here (stepping into Naughton's shoes), so why it would be any different there I don't know?
LeicesterAreGoingUp Posted 6 August 2012 Posted 6 August 2012 liked him, but i'm glad he's off the wage bill
AKCJ Posted 6 August 2012 Posted 6 August 2012 In what way does he have shades of Walker in him? He's slow, has no positional sense, refuses to attack and can't cross. I can't believe we made a profit on him. Excellent business Nige.
Jace Posted 6 August 2012 Posted 6 August 2012 How much was Peltier on the wage bill I know he was a Sven signing but surely it couldn't of been massive considering he was league 1 and Pantsil was signing too?

Fox92 Posted 6 August 2012 Posted 6 August 2012 Don't get this star of the future, I mean he is 25. It's young but in terms of football I doubt he has more to come?
flowwolf Posted 7 August 2012 Posted 7 August 2012 He was in my opinion a very weak link in our defense last season and that's saying something.Either there is a acute shortage of Championship standard right backs or as someone said Warnock has really lost the plot. The best bit of business in a long time, not only did we get our money back but he will continue being a weak link for one of our rivals. Well done Nigel !

I think the midfield made him look a lot worst than what he is, but that's just my opinion!
blueblood88 Posted 7 August 2012 Posted 7 August 2012 Leeds fans are creaming themselves over this, think they'll be in for a shock when they realise Peltier can't defend, can't attack, can't cross, can't shoot and has no positional awareness whatsoever. Seriously happy getting 800K for him, honestly preferred Robbie Neilson, at least he was solidish in defence, and wasn't costantly out of position, jogging back to defence when the opposition counter attack. Will not be missed.
MattyFromLE Posted 7 August 2012 Posted 7 August 2012 I really don't think he is as bad as some of your are making out. As I have said before, I think he had massive shoes to fill in Naughton who was a class above. We're Leicester City, not Chelsea. He'll do well at Leeds.

As I have said before, I think he had massive shoes to fill in Naughton who was a class above. We're Leicester City, not Chelsea. He'll do well at Leeds. I do not think he will though. He was a weak link in the team for us so I see no reason why he would be any better for Leeds. He should be reaching his peak now so how will he improve sufficiently to do well for a Championship team. Seemed like a decent bloke but could not defend against anybody half decent for shit. One thing to note is that NP knows how to build a defence and if he does not think he is good enough than I believe that he is not good enough.
MrSpaM Posted 7 August 2012 Posted 7 August 2012 Sounds like they were desperate from that Warnock interview. Coming out and saying we wanted 'x' but settled for 'y' isnt very clever.

J.Lisemore Posted 7 August 2012 Posted 7 August 2012 As others have said, I think its just great that we made a profit.. his defending is abysmal at this level.

You could also compare him to Konchesky, who is 6 years older than him yet had far more stamina.

If he was a weak link then he was 1 of many with the likes of gally and Welles and king in front of him? Gallagher can't tackle, head a ball or cross a ball? But he has a couple of good shots once in ten games and still gets in the team? Wellen is shite, too old too slow! King had a bad season hopefully! I don't like to say it but warnock is no mug, he ain't going to waste money Leeds haven't got. He's got far more experience in getting Out of this league than Pearson. I don't see any teams interested in Gallagher, wellens or any of the other dead wood!
muzzycomeback Posted 8 August 2012 Posted 8 August 2012 An average championship defender IMO, but not in the same league as naughton, so possibly underrated

I don't see any teams interested in Gallagher, wellens or any of the other dead wood! Obviously there were a lot of weak links in the team and pretty much every position bar goalkeeper has been strengthened - Pearson's no mug. Gallagher obviously has his weakenesses, but he's got his strengths too - he scores regularly, he takes a decent free kick, his crossing is better than people give him credit for, he's worth a place in the squad for sure. It annoys me when people say 'Pearson sticks with his favourites' - when Ben Marshall came in and started playing, who made way for him? Gallagher. Peltier was an absolute defensive liability and so many cheap goals started down his flank - if Warnock thinks he can get more out of him, fantastic. I'm glad that we've seen there is a problem there and addressed it by moving the player on and getting in a fairly cheap replacement.
