Most Clinical Strikers

I know Bergkamp was an absolute legend but would you class him as a clinical striker. In the time it's taken me to write this I've come to the conclusion that he was lol

Last 20 years is tough, but Ruud van Nistelrooy was one of the first names in my head.

I love Dennis Bergkamp, I think he's the best Premier League player ever, but I don't think of him as a clinical finisher. He's more of a magician.

Ruud. Every time. Wasn't ever his biggest fan but the guy had no strength, no real pace, didn't have a great leap. Just always in the right place and a ruthless finisher.

Bit like Superpippo (one of my favourite players ever) really. He had an okay turn of pace when he was younger but no great touch or technique and forever in offside or near offside positions but a ghost off the ball and a reliable finisher.

van Nistelrooy is my favourite player of the Premier League era, quite possibly just because of his finishing.

He also had a great first touch and was unrivaled with his back to goal but his finishing was a class above.

Fowler, Shearer, Romario and Owen were all pretty lethal in their day too.

Brazilian star Sócrates is a doctor of medicine, how fookin clinical is that ?

I can't believe that two people on this thread thought of that!

The great Ferenc Puskas must be up there.

HiS record (off the top of my head like).

Club record APPS GLS

Kispest 177 (187)

Budapest Honvéd 181 (187)

Real Madrid 262 (242)

Total 620 (616)

International record

Hungary 85 (84)

And yes, I was going to post the same FleckneyMike, Romario was unbelievable.

If we could go back slightly further then the answer can only be Gerd Muller "Der Bomber" in terms of pure finishing. No one can touch him.

Some of these players are ok , but all they do is score goals .

Messi and even Lineker was quite masterful in his day

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. He played on too long and spoiled not only his stats, but how younger people remember him (some geezer who dad said used to be good, but now can't even get to the halway line without use of his buspass.)

That's a bit harsh

The majority of the Prem players suggested here aren't even close to being the best finishers, they may be good forwards but not finishers. My answer remains Romario but here are some other notable omissions from the lists compiled so far for the last 20 years

Jardel had an unbelievable 9 seasons before his fitness completely went. From 96 to 2002 (7 seasons) alone he scored 267 goals in just 274 games.

No one has mentioned Crespo either, he was a phenomenal penalty area player.

Hugo Sanchez has also been overlooked.

Most criminally (though he hung his boots up in 95) is Marco Van Basten

I'm sorry but Ruud van Nistelrooy is absolutely, definitely one of the best finishers of all time.

You can't compare different generations of football and expect the stats to be equally impressive, they just aren't. Nor can you overlook the fact that Romario spent a large part of his playing career in weaker leagues in Brazil, the States, etc.

Even Jardel spent a majority of his career in a Portuguese league system where most teams were of no match at all for Porto and Sporting or for his own ability.

That's not to suggest that they weren't great players, clearly Romario was one of the best of all time, but it does make the point that goal scoring statistics alone do not qualify someone as a good finisher. Obviously they're a very good indicator but there's far more to it than just numbers. Otherwise some fifteen year old Sunday players who probably bag a hattrick every week against fat pubescent "defenders" would be among the greatest strikers of all time.

Anyone who's ever seen RVN play knows just how emphatically accurate and unforgiving he was when chances came his way and how miraculously he'd find space to carve them out. Absolutely phenomenal.
