I can't believe that its the best situation.

I had high hopes when they brought in an online appointment booking solution between 2 of my local surgeries.

It was meant to handle repeat prescriptions also.

Obviously it simply does not work though.

Back in the day before self certification certificates it used to be horrendous, you'd go to the Docs and there could be up to 50 people all waiting to see one doctor, no appointments then either, you'd be sat, if you were lucky in a crowded room full of people with infectious diseases all sneezing, blowing and scratching etc.

In my time of going down to see the local Docs, i've often found the female Docs to be far better than their male counterparts.

Thinking about it, the better doctors I've seen have been female. Apart from one horrible bitch, but she was a nurse so that doesn't count.

They have smaller hands which can be an advantage sometimes

Doctor's receptionists have got to be among my least favourite people........they can drop the attitude!! They will always ask me what it is concerning & I always tell them that is between me & my doctor. I tend to go into the surgery & avoid the telephone lottery. I'm not going to discuss my condition with a receptionist & anyone standing within ear-shot.

The problem I always seem to have is trying to make an appointment in advance - because of their policy of wanting to see me the same day. I'm not dying & it's not urgent, so can I make an appointment in a couple of days at a time that will suit me? "We can't make appointments days in advance. If you want an appointment on Friday, you will have to ring on Friday". It's a crazy situation.

I think there is a clash between what you want, what the doctor can do & what guidelines/targets are being enforced by the government

Are you sure it is the receptionist with the attitude? Sounds like they are just trying to do their job

I must be spoilt. I never seem to have any trouble getting to see my doctor, who is bloody ace, within a couple of days. He's even performed minor surgery on me in his room, seemingly just because he can

As a self harming, depressed teenager my then GP, who is now leader of the SDLP, told me to buck up my ideas and catch a grip of myself.

That wasn't minor surgery.

Could have been worse, if he'd been leader of Sinn Fein he might have blown you up.

I find them very stuck-up usually.

I don't mind them asking the questions they need to ask to do their job but they always seem to want to know what exactly is wrong me. They aren't qualified to form an opinion & I don't want to discuss anything with others in the reception area listening in. The last time I went, I had a problem in my groin/ possible hernia.......I don't want to talk to her about it & others probably don't want to hear about it.

She might want to know if I am wasting the doctor's time or not? Is she going to turn me away if she considers my complaint not worthy of attention?

I have never had a single problem with the doctors or nurses

Seems to me that you're the victims of socialized medicine. Since it's a business rather than welfare over here, I am overwhelmed with their desire to get me to see the doctor. If I don't have regular checkups the bugger refuses to give me my prescriptions. he's right of course, prevention is better than dealing with a cure.

Someone told me that in China you paid the doctor when you are well , and then when you're ill he comes and pays you until you are better which is a good incentive for him .

In a strange way it makes sense , but it could be a load of old bollox that someone has given me

But surely that is an incentive for you to be sick? And in a country where people pop out sprogs for a few extra quid, they will be constantly eating uncooked chicken and having unprotected sex with girls from Nottingham.

Fair play if she is interrogating you about your crotch she does sound annoying!

Bit of a hernia symptom right there.

On a positive note, maybe it's a bit of a chat up line, "How's the meat and two veg today, Mr Sinatra?"

While we're on doctors....Anyone got any suggestions on getting a quick referral to a consultant/specialist?

Went to the docs before christmas about a rugby injury to my lower back. He told me to rest it for a week or two and come back in if it's still a problem. I slipped a disc a few years ago and it caused me all sorts of pain and it was a horrible period in my life. I'm just worried and really don't want this to develop again and i'm anxious to get it seen to. I've rested for the last few weeks but it's still an issue.

TL;DR - Want a quick referral to consultant because of previous back injuries that took 6 months to get treatment for

I would advise going in with a very clear account of your problem, including what you yourself have tried to remedy the situation and precisely what the impact upon your life is. GPs are under great pressure from secondary (ie consultant) care to keep referral numbers down. If you have a clear problem, not amenable to conservative care which is having a tangible impact upon your life, chances are you will get the referral.

Given that your doctor has already said to you to return if the problem has not resolved in two weeks, I believe he will have no qualms referring you. A simpe musculoskeletal injury in a young person should resolve following a short rest period followed by mobilisation with painkillers, if that is not the case it warrants investigation.
