Clarendon Park and Stoneygate were former Quaker areas. The Quaker House is on Queens Road

Had no idea, makes sense.

It’s strange that there aren’t really any proper pubs in Knighton, Stoneygate and Western Park. It doesn’t even seem like there used to be either. Only 4 entries ever for Allandale rd

Many covenants have prevented pubs in those areas. Plus (historically) the built environment of those areas does not reflect the type of place that would have had pubs.

Yeah also reading the Donisthorpe et al families likely inserted those covenants

Sounds familiar

May be an image of 2 people and text

I suppose there is some truth in this but it's interesting how cities like Manchester and Liverpool have attempted to reinvent themselves as some kind of last socialist bastions against globalisation and corporate greed (and even Englishness in Liverpool) when they both basically owe their entire existence as major cities to industrialisation, empire and rapacious capitalism.

Shame that, had a few good nights there.

Same. I thought it was a good addition and certainly more affordable than the leisure sites within the city.

The Curve falling to bits - or bits falling off.

It's only been up 5 bloody minutes.

Council, ie you and me, will need to foot the repair bill as original company has gone out of business - perhaps not surprisingly.

Modern buildings are mostly shit

It shouldn’t have been in theory but clearly as others have said, it was. Got a half decent variety of drink places in the area, Chutney Ivy, the Curve and some large offices, it should have done well.

That's not a lot of money in the grand scheme of things and its small quirks like that which do/can make a difference to peoples perceptions of a city.

Plus it would have been great for the local artists.

I'm not so sure.

In my view, it'll encourage more graffiti by giving a perceived 'green light' to those who wish to deface areas with their 'art'.

The graffiti around the city centre is 1 of the few interesting things about it at the moment

There's already plenty of 'commissioned art' on buildings in the city so the encouragement is already there.

I'm not a big fan of grafitti commissioned or not I don't even like painted brickwork, but others do so be it it's great for the arists especially if they're local or from the Colleges/Unis

This. We have one of the best up-and-coming street art scenes in the Country. One thing Leicester is known for that isn't horrifically negative.

It was built 16 years ago so its probably 6 years out of warranty.

Its probably a maintenance issue, it usually is with Public Sector buildings.

Iconic Leicester store Blunts Shoes confirms closure
The store has been in Leicester since the 1980s

ByTom MackSenior Reporter

Iconic Leicester city centre store Blunts Shoes is to close its doors for the final time later this year. Bosses have blamed falling footfall for the end of the shoe business which has been a mainstay in the city for 40 years.

The iconic Granby Street store is among the first people see when arriving in Leicester by train, but it will close in the coming weeks after Blunts head office in Kidderminster decided it was no longer financially viable to remain open.

Jazmin Blunt from Blunts head office said the news was "sad" to announce. She said: "After 40 wonderful years, we are sad to announce the closing of our Blunts Shoes Leicester store. It has been an honour to serve this community, and we are truly grateful for your support and loyalty over the years."

Blunts, which has 10 other shops across the region, also owns United Footwear in Newbold Verdon. The company has confirmed that store, which is to the west of Leicester, will remain open.

Was the footfall comment an accidental pun
