DennisNedry Posted 27 June 2013 Posted 27 June 2013 This morning I went to the doctors to get some blood taken, to be sent for tests regarding vitamin levels, all fairly routine. All through my childhood I've been absolutely fine with vaccinations - obviously never liking them - but I've never had any trouble. I'm now 20 so I didn't give it much thought, and I was fine before and during the blood being taken. Afterwards as well I felt fine as I left the practice, got in my car and started driving off. After a minute or so I started feeling really sick and dizzy, so I pulled over as quickly as possible. My vision went all blurry and I wound down the window and started dry wretching (I hadn't had breakfast so had nothing to bring up). I got out and lay down across the back seats and after about 10 minutes I felt well enough to drive home. Even now, 3 hours later I feel a bit sick and weak. Has anybody else experienced anything similar to this? I kinda feel a bit pathetic having such a reaction to a drop of blood being taken.
Fox92 Posted 27 June 2013 Posted 27 June 2013 Yeah, I had the same problem. I had my blood taken, went to work the next day and went dizzy. Told me to go home actually, and that's what happened. Was fine after I went to sleep etc.
ealingfox Posted 27 June 2013 Posted 27 June 2013 After I donated blood I went for a pint about 3 hours later and threw it all back up about 5 minutes after leaving the pub. Also had to lie on the grass near the puddle of vom for about 20 minutes but luckily as it was a sunny day bypassers thought I was just chillin'.

HEGGSY Posted 27 June 2013 Posted 27 June 2013 Happened to me almost as soon as I walked out of the doctors office , last time I had blood taken. I felt fine as he was taking blood, once the Dr. had finished, I walked out the room into the reception area, felt dizzy and fainted. Woke up about 20 minutes later laying on a bed in an empty doctors office, I was like "what the fvck"
Webbo Posted 27 June 2013 Posted 27 June 2013 My wife gets it sometimes after giving blood. We always assumed it was something to do with her low blood pressure.

StanSP Posted 27 June 2013 Posted 27 June 2013 I always thought you weren't meant to eat before a blood test as well. They usually give you crisps/fizzy drinks to get your sugar levels back up and hopefully prevent you fainting/feeling sick.
Bryn Posted 27 June 2013 Posted 27 June 2013 It is almost certainly because you didn't eat. The only reason you need to have fasted before having your blood taken is if they were assessing your blood glucose.

I was given a course of D3's which I was supposed to take until gone. 3 containers 60 in each. Just reminded me. If you are eating the right foods and drinking plenty of fluids you'll be OK.

cambridgefox Posted 27 June 2013 Posted 27 June 2013 Mentioned a few weeks ago that I had six blood tests for the first time ever.Really Didnt realise how much they take,anyway the last one just wouldn't give any blood.Whilst she wiggled the needle in my arm I went clammy and dizzy,she wasn't too shabby for a late 40s women( not 1940s) but not that good to make me go dizzy. She told me to strip to the waist.How was I to know she meant the top half! No,she fanned me with some leaflets and I was fine.Think it happens a lot,guys at work said the same.
Parafox Posted 28 June 2013 Posted 28 June 2013 Seems unlikely to be due a drop in blood pressure from a simple blood test sample. They only take 5-10 mls, per sample, if that. When you donate blood its 500 ml so it's quite likely a person would feel some effect from that. It must be more to do with the lack of food.

Smudge Posted 28 June 2013 Posted 28 June 2013 It's probably a drop in blood sugar. Drinking alcohol, drops the blood sugar even lower. Eating a sweet biscuit and or drinking orange juice after the test should steady the glucose levels.
Rincewind Posted 28 June 2013 Posted 28 June 2013 When I was in hospital One morning the nurse put a jug of orange juice by my bed and said I want that drunk today. My levels were low. I started to drink a lot of hot chocolate. I thought it was supposed to be bad for you but was told it was good.
