Dickov22 Posted 23 July 2013 Posted 23 July 2013 The back 3 looked solid, but Whitbread looked a bit sluggish. Also I don't think SSL will start this season, so this back 3 won't be used IMO Marshall played well first half, played in a midfield 3- could see him and Knockaert doing a really good job in this position this season. Vardy was very good. First touch has improved, worked hard, looks quick. Waghorn was surprisingly good first half but frustrating second half. Danns had lots of energy, King quiet.
Dan Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 I was encouraged with what I saw tonight. They looked incredibly fit - even right at the end we were beating them to every single ball, they just looked full of energy. Our ball retention was excellent. We did give it away a couple of times but even Barcelona do, we just looked comfortable in possession and our movement was very decent. I'd take a 1-0 win with a performance like that over a 6-0 scrap. Also, Vardy - excellent. If he can play like that in the league then he'll be an asset this season, and I'm not joking either, he looked like the player I hoped we'd signed 12 months ago. Just a friendly but encouraging signs tonight. Good work.
Dan Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 Interviewing some superstars on RL at the moment. "Knochesky? Not noticed him but have seen someone with hair at left back." #banter
Harry - LCFC Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 Vardy looked out of the picture a while ago. Just seemed to be one of those players who would have to me moved on at the end of the season. Of course he has to prove it when the season starts but he's shown he's capable, quite a turnaround for him if he gets back into the team. Hope the fans back him.
Dan Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 I'd be more than prepared to give him another chance from a supporters view - he seemed to be mistake ridden and shot of confidence but he's looked so lively so far, very dangerous to the opposition when on the ball etc... Hope he does it too.
Bugg Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 What I noticed about Vardy last night was that his first touch was vastly improved, he was unlucky not to score after some good work to win the ball back in his own half as well.
davieG Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 Nigel Pearson is hoping that Leicester City will enter the 2013/14 campaign with plenty of options after seeing his side secure an impressive 1-0 win over Port Vale by utilising a 3-5-2 system. Martyn Waghorn scored the only goal on the night, but it was the team performance that will have pleased Foxes fans, with Paul Koncheksy and Ritchie De Laet also impressing as wing backs. A tough Middlesbrough side awaits The Foxes in the new Championship season on 3 August of course, but Tuesday night’s display at Vale Park has given the boss plenty of reason for optimism. “The players are comfortable with it [the 3-5-2 formation] in the sense that it suits our centre backs and our wing backs, who we’ve seen here can get forward on lots of occasions,†Pearson revealed after the match. “It’s an extra man in midfield too and it means we can play with the two up top. It is a decent system if you execute it properly. I think our players quite enjoy it and it does give us a different option, so we’ll hopefully go into the season with that option.†With match fitness clearly a priority, the Manager resisted the urge to make changes on the night and was delighted to see the whole team emerge from the match unscathed. He added: “We have kept the starting XI on for the entirety and I think there were spells in the game where one or two looked tired, but they came through it and I think they finished the game very strongly. “I think that’s good, and we were against a side that we knew would try and shake us up a little bit. They [Port Vale] tried lots of options in the second half, so it was a decent run out really.†The front pairing of Waghorn, and Jamie Vardy also impressed Pearson, who was pleased to see the latter back to his best with a typically energetic display. “I think tonight for the most part they both secured the ball pretty well but also made a lot of very good runs,†said Pearson. “I think Vardy looks like his old self, which is good. He looked sharp and it’s always good to have forwards who can put the opposition’s back five under Read more at http://www.lcfc.com/news/article/230714-pearson-happy-with-options-939672.aspx#xlcOX45ZgILUBCoy.99
Ric Flair Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 I was always baffled at Vardy's performances last season, his style of play had completely changed from how he played when at Fleetwood. I know the gulf in class is massive but a players natural game should still shine through, even if they don't have as much success. But instead of collecting the ball and running at defenders, shooting on sight and looking very direct. He was hesistant, with a poor first touch and a reluctance to shoot. I am glad we've not binned him off just yet as a good manager should be able to develop a player with natural ability and relax them so they can play to their strengths. Hopefully Pearson has fathomed this out and they are starting to progress.
theessexfox Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 Looking fairly promising in a number of areas. New, suited formation, the out of form players of last season getting some form and we've strengthened one reasonably important area. Looks good.
Fox92 Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 Vardy and Danns stood out the most from me. Whitbread looks like he's such a has been. Waggy looked very strong and sharp. Not suprised. Don't rate him at all. I'd soon rather have Moore or SSL over him.
suffolk fox Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 Would not read too much into this at all. It was a friendly against Port Vale. Friendly results especially pre season mean the square root of naff all. Roll on Middlesborough on the 3rd August that's when the season starts. Do not want to be over critical but we managed one goal against Port Vale a team that was struggling to put together a defence last night due to a number of injuries. Derby put five past them too recently.
theessexfox Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 Were they trying out a new formation? Friendly results mean nothing, it's the positive sounding performance I'm interested in.

Tedders Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 Thought Danns konch de laet wes and vardy stood out above the rest. Whitbread was poor again giving possession away cheaply and conceding pointless free kicks. I like players that can prove people wrong (vardy) fair play to the lad, Not been his biggest fan but he was chucked in the deep end coming here. one game has not changed my mind but improvements were shown hope he can keep it up.
GingerrrFox Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 How many times have I said Whitbread is past it? Got no legs. Gives away possession. Stupid free kicks that also cost us last season. Absolute liability. However I LOVEEEE the 3-5-2. We look much more dangerous and in control last night.
Ric Flair Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 How has Whitbread gone from being one of the best defenders in this league and not looking out of his depth in the PL to being an absolute norris for us? It's not as if he's over the hill, he's only 28. I hope he can find his form again, I don't buy he's crap. That said, i'm yet to see him put in a composed performance for us, bizarre.
GingerrrFox Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 If you look shit against Leamington and Port Vale you got no chance against the likes of Reading, Bolton, Forest etc.

He's had some serious injuries hasn't he which could have an impact on his legs. He's been fine for us in large chunks and then manages to pull off a few clangers! The defensive spell people rave about with SSL was no better as a team than the one with Whitbread playing in reality. He just cocked up personally a couple of times.

He's also probably had virtually no competitive games in about 6 months. I think we need to be patient here. For me, he has something we need and should get off his back. Some of our supporters just sooooo need a 'go to' figure to fix the blame fast!
LCFC FOX Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 Good Performances: Zak Whitbread Neil Danns Martyn Waghorn Paul Koncheskey Okay performances (nothing special) Wes Morgan Sean St Ledger Kasper Schmeichel Ritchie De Laet Ben Marshall Jamie Vardy (Even that all he does is run round like a head less chicken but can't finish which was proved yesterday again) Under performed Andy King
Dan Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 If you look shit against Leamington and Port Vale you got no chance against the likes of Reading, Bolton, Forest etc. You mean like the Newcastle side that lost 6-1 at Orient before hitting over 100 points in the Championship? Honestly, the emphasis people put on pre-season results is truly astounding.

Whitbread was 'okay', Morgan was very decent last night, a Vale fan outside said "I absolutely despise the bloke" and then told me it was because of how good he is Vardy should be straight into the 'good' section. He looked a different player last night. Credit to Danns too. He looked so fit, and whilst he did give the ball away a couple of times, he produced some very decent skill on occasions. I'd still get rid personally but fair play if he's doing it with a fight.
