Ecuador striker Christian Benitez, also known as "Chucho", has passed away this morning, his agent and the national team co-ordinator have confirmed. The 27-year-old's sad death is a huge shock, and has come about after complications relating to appendicitis, according to his father-in-law. The disease then became peritonitis before leading to respiratory arrest. Benitez played for El Nacional and Santos Laguna in his career before a season on loan at Birmingham City in the Premier League, before returning to Mexico with Club America before joining El Jaish in the Qatari league. He also played at the 2006 World Cup for his country, picking up 58 caps in his career. The highly-talented striker's surprise death will come as a huge blow to football. Antonio Valencia, a close friend of the striker, took to Twitter earlier to tweet his condolences to his family and mourn his death as reports began to filter through, which were confirmed by the player's club, agent, and father-in-law. I can't believe it he was one of my favourite players, RIP Chuco.
Wymsey Posted 29 July 2013 Posted 29 July 2013 Even fit people can have devastating heart attacks. Only remember him briefly; was more of a provider than a goalscorer imo. RIP
stevelcfc Posted 29 July 2013 Posted 29 July 2013 Wow, I rated him, wasn't great at Brum but he was a decent striker. RIP
MC Prussian Posted 29 July 2013 Posted 29 July 2013 What a sad story and what a terrible way of leaving this world. R.I.P.
RonnieTodger Posted 29 July 2013 Posted 29 July 2013 Absolutely shocking, RIP. It was only about last month that he was linked with Spurs after a very good season in Mexico.
EnderbyFox Posted 29 July 2013 Posted 29 July 2013 Last picture he tweeted, him and his twins. Heartbreaking stuff

Super_horns Posted 29 July 2013 Posted 29 July 2013 Sad news - sure our fans will pay their respects at Birmingham on Saturday.
Jordan Posted 29 July 2013 Posted 29 July 2013 I really liked Chucho as a player. He was fantastic lately for Ecuador and Club América, and was just about to start an new chapter in his career. By all regards, he was a class act on and off the field, and he will be sorely missed. I have several friends and acquaintances from Ecuador, and they are shocked by the news.
morris1234 Posted 29 July 2013 Posted 29 July 2013 Such a tragedy at such a young age. My and, I'm sure, everybody's thoughts are with his family and thinking of him at this difficult time. May he rest in peace.
Guest Bilo Posted 29 July 2013 Posted 29 July 2013 Terrible to hear of somebody dying so young, one can only feel for his family at this time.
Mack Posted 30 July 2013 Posted 30 July 2013 I see he played in Qatar. I wonder how hot it was during his last game?
Manwell Pablo Posted 30 July 2013 Posted 30 July 2013 Something seems a bit wrong to me, rushed to hospital with suspected appendix problem and ends up dying of a "heart attack"............
Bert Posted 30 July 2013 Posted 30 July 2013 Something seems a bit wrong to me, rushed to hospital with suspected appendix problem and ends up dying of a "heart attack"............Respiratory arrest.
FrankieWorthoYaggedMyWife Posted 31 July 2013 Posted 31 July 2013 Obviously sad.... But lets be about right, he was utter guff
z-layrex Posted 31 July 2013 Posted 31 July 2013 Something seems a bit wrong to me, rushed to hospital with suspected appendix problem and ends up dying of a "heart attack"............ I've sadly seen a few young and previously healthy people die from appendicitis even here in the UK. If it was picked up too late and he contracted peritonitis, that can lead to full blown septicaemia, and in a country that I bet doesn't have a very good critical care service like Ecuador you're in big trouble. RIP. xx
