Best Own Goals

The Times is featuring the best 5 own goals in the Premier league. Unfortunately, two of these are by City.

At number 2 was Sinclair's back pass - 3rd on link below of some of his own goals (I like the comment about Izzet taking him out!)

And number 4 was Ian Walker's fumble:

The only positive comment is that we were in the top tier for these to be featured.

Felt sorry for Walker that night. Bolton came and did that free kick jinx, which we see a lot now, but back then I don't think many people knew about it. I recall Nolan standing about 5 yards offside then going onside when the ball was played. He missed a chance earlier in the game when he ended up kicking the advertising boards.

Must of confused Walker, well he even said it did, hence that fumble happened.

Oh, also, can anyone remember Matt Heath's own goal against Ipswich? It was a midweek game I think. We were 2-1 up (I recall Darren Bent scoring in the first minute for them) and I can't remember if it was a set piece or open play, but Heath literally scored one of the greatest own goals I've seen. To this day, I think he actually meant to do it.

(I can never find footage of it unless I watch the season review from that season).

I remember the Matt Heath one, it was the 04/05 season. It would've been easier for him to head it anywhere else but the goal

Sorry, but I felt anything other than sorry for him that night. It was that period when we seemed to be dominating for spells and scoring goals but just shooting ourselves in the foot at every opportunity. It was a horrific mistake, he should have been hanged in the town square (from his undies).

Yeah, in stoppage time as well. And he'd already scored in the right net that game!

Think it might have been Ian Westlake with the goal in the first minute though...

Weale didnt score. Andy King did technically.

Ah Chris Weale, the only man to **** up against Derby, Forest and Forest in consecutive seasons.

Mad Frank will always be the own goal king, some own goals are unlucky swipes of the foot but every one of Frank's would need you to check twice that he hadn't done it on purpose.

Keith Weller away at Luton, bent it around Mark Wallington......

On this video. Remember it well.

The season after we had mullered them in the cup!

The player that holds the rather dubious record is actually Steve Walsh with Seven!

Frank Sinclair is credited with three, one of which was against Chelsea. And as you say, he may well have done this on purpose - to redress the balance when he scored an own goal when he was playing for Chelsea against Leicester!

It's the quality not the quantity Stocky. Misfortune is one thing, there was something more sinister with Frank's, it made you question whether he truly know what was going on at all or whether he was merely impersonating a footballer and hoping for the best.
