Ipswich Post Match Thread 2 - 1 WIN

Buzzing for Matty James today it hasn't really clicked for him so far this season and today just gave everyone including himself a reminder of how good a player he is and can be. Personally feel he should go on a little run in the team now whilst King seemed lacklustre and could do with a rest.

Cracking from Nugent, that is what everyone knows he can produce it's just frustrating when he's goes slightly off the boil. Kinda game we would have lost last season IMO.

I was absolutely distraught at half time.

Our first half performance was awful, the sort of timid, defensive setup that signalled our impending demise this time last season. No energy or attacking intent whatsoever, so easily closed down in midfield we ended up going back to the hoof.

The half time change in personnel made a difference but for me the change in attitude was everything. So much more aggressive and positive and overall a great team effort, showing the ability we have seen this season to just 'get it done'.

That said I have the horrors about a number of aspects of our play but it is hard to be critical given the results so far. One thing I feel we really need to do is to get Moore back into the middle of defence, without him we seem to lack composure, Morgan and Wasilewski are too similar I think, both very physical but lacking in organisation and composure.

Great result today, my 50th away game with city and the first I've seen us win coming from behind!

First half limp and lifeless, not quite the horror show some are making out but we just didn't get out of first gear.

Second half came screaming out of the blocks, dyer, drinky and Nugent all excellent.

Good end as well despite the wailing banshee behind me who would scream whenever we got in their half and kept saying 'I'm so pissed I don't know where we are'

Some were seriously tempting fate towards the end with the chants though!

how did we change formation in the second half?

The big change in the game for me was woods coming on.

First half kasper kicking it long and it came straight back.

Second half wood was covering ground to make the kicks and holding them.

Why oh why as pros can they not see when long punts do not work.

The big change was when Wood came on, even though we were already 2-1 up when he came on? Ok then.

Good news no international break, we should now finish the season without defeat...

Yeah so you can't change or improve a game if no goals are scored while your on the pitch then.

The way the ball was coming back upto then they would have had every chance of pulling one back.

We look a hell of a lot safer when he came on.

lol

So the 'big' change in the game wasn't us turning it around to take the lead, it was us holding on to the lead? For what it's worth I can't remember a Wood holding a single ball up when he came on anyway, he looked way off the pace.

We always win 2-1.

how much could you have made backing that every week?

So long as we dont fcuk v the wall. Then we have one hell of a week in dec.

Middlesborugh - 17/2 (£1 returns £9.50)

Wycombe (Cup) - 15/2 (£1 returns £8.50)

Blackburn - 7/1 (£1 returns £8)

Derby (Cup) - 8/1  (£1 returns £9)

Barnsley - 7/1 (£1 returns £8)

Yeovil - 7/1 (£1 returns £8)

Huddersfield - 7/1 (£1 returns £8)

Bournemouth - 7/1  (£1 returns £8)

Ipswich - 9/1 (£1 returns £10)

So if you placed £1 on us winning 2-1 at every game this season you would have staked £20, winning £77 meaning you are £57 in profit so far this season. Not bad.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing though, no doubt if we all start betting on 2-1 from now on we won't win another game with a 2-1 scoreline! lol

Funny that others around commented on how he was meeting the long ball and holding onto it.

Thought Wood did ok, without being anything special. A different sort of player to Vardy or Nugent so yes, our game did change but not to any great effect.

For me the problems remains in defence, Wes and Was are too similar, both big imposing players but lacking the pace and the composure that Moore was beginning to bring to our play before the re-shuffle, without Moore's covering Morgan has looked much less assured.

We are missing De Laet too, primarily in transition where is ability to get forward quickly and give us another option is sorely missed, no idea when he will be fit.

Same setup against Millwall but with James for King who needs a rest and Knockaert for Dyer who is largely ineffective against a massed defence. Tempted to play Schlupp for Konchesky, particularly as De Laet is still absent.

This is crucial, Moore is a promising and very competent defender but going forward he looks less sure whereas De Laet looks natural.

Just read through the match thread. Some total and utter c**** on here. Get behind the lads hey. Listen to Nuge's post match interview, saying fans have been getting on his back, not the biggest surprise we seem to implode after Christmas, think all the players are fed up of the moaners by then.

Sounds like he is still jetlagged after the trip from New Zealand... :dunno:

De Laet is a much worse defender though.

I wouldn't say it's crucial anyway, our form and performances have been good without De Laet.

Couldn't De Laet play out wide on the right, leaving Moore available to defend?

I'm sure De Laet would be better suited to that position than Knockaert.

If you are advocating that, given Pearson's current line-ups, Knocky would have to be dropped?

Do you drop your most creative player?

Could play him as a central midfielder (playmaker), in a 4-4-2 but then that would defeat the purpose of our 4-4-2 because we play 2 box to box midfielders.

Not at all, I would rather Knockaert was given a roaming role where he can drift around behind the strikers. Think he could be more effective than on the right wing.

The substitutes undoubtedly changed the game. We have a few little issues atm and NP addressed them. I'm not sure if Moore was injured or not, however it is evident that Wes struggles on the left side of defence and bringing Miquel in and shifting Was to RB solidified the defence.

King also seems to be run into the ground somewhat with a heavy schedule already, starting almost every game for club and country so far (22 games Stringer said today) which takes its toll. Bringing on James and providing more energy and dynamism was the boldest move. Sometimes it's easy for a manager to sit there and say 'give them another 10/15 minutes' but NP made the right choices at the right times today.

Playing with pace away from home has helped too. Vardy and Dyer always look dangerous on the counter and Knockaert provides that bit of flair and creativity that allows us to express our attacking side away. The resurgence of Drinkwater has been vital too.

Not surprising you avoid commenting on Nugent scoring two goals from 'open play'
