Decline in Punditry and Commentary.

Anyone else notice the decline this season?

From Match of the Day, to BT Sport, ITV and Sky Sports, it's gone real bad on all fronts, from the TV presenters, the studio guests and the commentary.

Monday Night Football is the only programming where you are engaged, and that is purely down to Carragher and Neville, they have taken punditry to a new level, they're more in the know with modern football.

Commentating has become shocking, some of the main culprits for the decline.. Sam Matterface, Michael Owen, Niall Quinn, Ian Darke, David Provan and I can only presume I have missed some off the list.

Don't get me wrong it's not just Carragher and Neville who are clued up and worth a listen, Glen Hoddle, Owen Hargreaves and Lee Dixon I think are good as well.

Jamie Redknapp has become a dope, Shearer, Lawrenson, Hansen, Keane, Strachan, Wilkins and Souness were all great footballers but they're not with current football and the way the game is being played now.

The presenters are absolutely shocking, Ben Shepard, Adrian Chiles and Jake Humphries are not good.

Going off topic, did anyone else know Sam Matterface was married to Natalie Sawyer? Lucky bastard.

Couldn't believe it when I heard that, he is well and truly batting above his average unless of course his family is loaded.

I only found out the other day, I couldn't believe it either.

Clarke Carlisle is an awful Co-Commentator.

  • Name Drops in every game he can "Oooh i know *player name here* he's not usually that type
  • His voice sounds like Gary Barlows (But even more soul distressingly monotonous, if possible)
  • Last game I heard him commentate on he spoke for 5 - 10 minutes about ankle injuries.

He makes Towsend seem like Mr Personality!

Correct about Richardson. Absolute fantastic presenter, has the right balance of everything.

Martin Tyler is unbeatable as a lead commentator and Fletcher is the best of the rest (remember the Century 106 days).

As for pundits, Gary Neville's head and shoulders above anybody else but he's generally fixated on football and not cliche's and his own ego.

The most annoying thing about most commentators is they refuse to disagree with a refereeing decision. They also always refuse to blame a player for diving or cheating when it is clear for all to see.

Alan Green on radio five live is bloody annoying with his 'i'm right, you're wrong' attitude. Robbie Savage as a pundit grinds my gears too. Mark Chapman does a decent job as the anchor though.

Just a quick one whats the name of the commentator who does the majority of football league games on sky? The guy who did the old "DEEENNEEYYY" when he scored in the playoff last season?

Bill Leslie I believe.

I barely pay attention these days, the majority of it is painfully bland, textbook stuff.

Fully with Albert about who he's praised. Carragher, Neville and Hoddle are my favourite three by a mile.

I noticed Niall Quinn was included on that list, but I actually think he's one of the more clued-up pundits. Experienced at the highest level both playing for and running a club, which not many in the punditry game have.

Close this thread, it's just been ruined.

I enjoyed Monday Night Football until Carragher joined in.

Not only do I have to really concentrate to understand a word he's saying I don't think he adds anything more to the show that Neville did'nt already.

ITV Sport has been embarrassing for years so I don't expect anything more from them either, however they have lost the Champions League to BT sport so there wont be much Football left on there soon anyway.

BT Sport had the chance to do something fresh, but with the likes of Owen commentating it's as poor as the rest in all truth.

Hairy Keys and his jock sidekick were a pair of neanderthals, but at least they did a decent job of the coverage for me.

I think Carra is an excellent addition. Obviously Neville is fantastic but they have good chemistry and it adds another intelligent and tactical opinion. He adds more because he doesn't just share the same thoughts as Neville.

Horrible to admit but that was a great piece of commentary to go with a ridiculous few minutes of football.

Pat Nevin is pretty good as well.

I actually disagree with the thread.  Punditry's got much better this season.  Neville has raised the bar and others have followed, which is about time.

Gabriele Marcotti got a mention earlier.  He's someone I usually listen to when he's on.

Completely agree with James Richardson being the best of the current crop. Very knowledgeable about the game unlike some of the bland sky presenters and anyone that listens to football weekly podcast will know how witty the bloke is.

Rose tinted specs I think. There have been plenty of bad commentators as long as the game has been on the airwaves! Remember Jimmy Greaves and how shit he was!

After years of playing FIFA I can't face Clive Tyldsey at all any more though.

On the flip side who are the greatest commentators in your eyes?

Bring back Nev to radio Leicester!

Brian Clough use to be a laugh when he was a pundit.

I doubt you were able to appreciate the humour of Brian Clough at the age of 10 and even younger than 10..

To call someone a great commentator I personally remember commentators calling the major moments in games, for me personally I liked Andy Gray just because of his over the top reaction to Steven Gerrard's goals v Olympiacos and West Ham.

There was the old BBC one, I cant remember his name for the life of me he commentated on Liverpool's win v Alaves in the UEFA Cup Final in 2001, he was good at calling the big moments.

I'm not too fussed about the commentary as much, unless they are real bad, like Matterface and Carlisle combo.. It's the punditry that I find terrible now.

I can't believe someone has said Pat Nevin!
