bald reynard Posted 11 March 2014 Posted 11 March 2014 I see Chris Powell has just been given the boot by Charlton's new owner (and replaced by a Belgian, from ONE of the owners clubs !). Could he make a return to City as a Coach ? We know Nige didn't want him to go and he hasn't been replaced by anyone else, but perhaps KP is lined up for that job at the end of this season ? I'd have him back. He did a great job for us - he's a good bloke (and he hasn't been a total disaster at Charlton).
kingcarr21 Posted 11 March 2014 Posted 11 March 2014 Dont think he will want to go back to being a coach now he has tasted management. Would welcome him back if he was to come.
Hungry Hungry Fox Posted 11 March 2014 Posted 11 March 2014 Don't think we need another coach tbh, and I'm not in favour of hiring someone for sentimental reasons
indierich06 Posted 11 March 2014 Posted 11 March 2014 Don't think we need another coach tbh, and I'm not in favour of hiring someone for sentimental reasons Nothing sentimental about it, he was great when he was here and the players all loved him - he'd certainly be an asset to have on the coaching staff. But as others have said, why would he want to come back and take what would essentially be a massive step down in terms of his career? He's a manager now and he'll want to manage, he's certainly proved he's got the ability. Completely overhauling and getting Charlton out of League One on their non-existent budget was no mean feat. I'd say Powell getting Charlton promoted is more impressive than Pearson getting Leicester out of League One IMO.
Monsell1976 Posted 11 March 2014 Posted 11 March 2014 Would take him back as a coach in a flash, appears a good bloke, and would be good to have around. But like has been said, he's a manager now, and hope he gets a managers job soon.
Ross 'LCFC' Turner Posted 11 March 2014 Posted 11 March 2014 Maybe being a coach is his limit? Promotion to the championship and consolidation in his first season isnt bad going. Lets be honest he's had his hands tied with little funds & now a new owner bringing in his own players from his different clubs.
HesNotGudjonsonn2 Posted 11 March 2014 Posted 11 March 2014 On an additional note, doesn't this make Pearson the longest serving Championship Manager currently?

Would have thought KP will be coaching the forwards if he is giving a coaching opportunity, Powell for the defence?
Guy Posted 11 March 2014 Posted 11 March 2014 On an additional note, doesn't this make Pearson the longest serving Championship Manager currently? If you're talking present tense then I would say quite possibly yes, as it's already been two and a half years now since Pearson came back to us from Hull. That stat alone re length of service credentials is scary to me!! Longest serving manager is Wenger of course, followed by Paul Tisdale at Exeter. Also I suppose the obvious thought is - it depends if you mean present or if you also tot up both spells of managers in this division's reign. If you did the latter then he'd be there or thereabouts in that long serving regard - as you could also argue the same re Eddie Howe at Bournemouth, B.Davies at Forest and Gary Johnson at Yeovil with reference to all of the above's two spells there too, past and present.....but as hard as it is to do so, I believe Pearson is now the longest serving Championship manager on current duration alone!
Jakemoore Posted 11 March 2014 Posted 11 March 2014 Would personally love it but I doubt it'll happen as he'll be looking for another managerial job now. He got Charlton promoted from league 1 so he'll have a few L1 clubs after him I reckon. Also, doesn't this mean Pearson is now the oldest serving manager in the league?
Agent Fox Posted 11 March 2014 Posted 11 March 2014 Surely Jason Roberts has something important to say about this?
Jace Posted 11 March 2014 Posted 11 March 2014 I do believe Pearson is now the longest serving manager in the Championship, I did suggest on the previous thread on here that he returns back to us before it was moved to the general football and sport category. Would be good to see him back and possibly the opportunity to be involved with a Premiership team rather than a manager possibly at league 1 level again would be appealing to him if Pearsons interested.

lancyclaret Posted 11 March 2014 Posted 11 March 2014 I heard there is a story in Mirror saying Powell could be QPR's next manager if Redknapp quits at end of season.
Guest Col city fan Posted 11 March 2014 Posted 11 March 2014 I personally see Powell as a better coach than a manager. I don't think I would have him back now. Why disrupt our already excellent management team? He will want to manage elsewhere I suspect.
indierich06 Posted 11 March 2014 Posted 11 March 2014 I don't get where this idea that 'he's a better coach than manager' is coming from. Charlton was his first job, he built a team and took them up as League One champions (something that people are always quick to praise Pearson for on here), he consolidated in his first season as well, finishing 8th ahead of much more 'experienced' managers and teams with better resources. I get the feeling that if his name was Cristiano Powellinho then half the Championship would be raving about him. For me, his record isn't too dissimilar from a certain Nigel Pearson's during his first tenure at the club. Yeah, it's not been great this season, but when your ground's so shit you have to call off multiple games and your club gets taken over by some nutter who sells your best players and tries to force you to play rejects from his other clubs then what do you expect? I think he's done a reasonable job in some very unreasonable working conditions this season. They're bottom of the league, but what do you expect when you've played 4 games less than everyone else? If they won a few games on the spin they'd be mid-table by the time they caught up with the rest of the league in terms of games played. Still think he won't struggle to get another job at a League One club or lower end Championship side, he's more than good enough.
_Fatboyslow_ Posted 11 March 2014 Posted 11 March 2014 Still think he won't struggle to get another job at a League One club or lower end Championship side, he's more than good enough. He will be back in a job before long and despite our fans respect for the guy I just don't see how it could work for him here
Grewks Posted 11 March 2014 Posted 11 March 2014 Those who wouldn't haven't got a clue in my opinion. What could be better next season than the players having 3 ex premier league players in NP, Chris Powell and Phillips? NP in the stands, KP, Shaky and Chrissy P on the sidelines. Totally disagree with the 'don't need another coach' argument also. Compared to other PL clubs our coaching setup is ridiculously small.
Leicesterpool Posted 11 March 2014 Posted 11 March 2014 Would love to see him back, maybe a short term contract until he finds himself another job.
ealingfox Posted 11 March 2014 Posted 11 March 2014 Are we not overstating our association with him a bit? He might have finished his career with us and coached for a bit but he played 250 times for Southend, over 200 times for Charlton and 100-odd times for Derby, compared to around 20 times for us. It's possibly quite fanciful to think he's a fox at heart. Also it's pretty naive to think he'll want to come back to us and be a coach. His sacking from Charlton is mostly circumstantial, they might be bottom but if there's such thing as a false position in league tables then Charlton are in one owing to their numerous games in hand. A title and promotion in his first full season, consolidation up here in his second season, and a 40% win rate overall means that League One clubs will be queueing round the block to get him in now, if not lesser Championship sides.
