fleckneymike Posted 17 March 2014 Posted 17 March 2014 I'm ignoring every post that doesn't include the Oxford English dictionary definition of something ignoreverb to intentionally not listen or give attention to:
Raj Posted 17 March 2014 Posted 17 March 2014 Anyone see the Space Programme yday live from ISS? The way the astronaughts spoke about looking at the earth from 250,000 miles away. It has no borders You cant see different colours of humans. you realise just how fickle it all is.....mind you i hate Brummies!!
The Year Of The Fox Posted 17 March 2014 Posted 17 March 2014 These kind of moronic threads are popping up on here too often nowadays. Bigger things to worry about in life than the next mans skin colour or nationality. I think the reasoning behind it runs deeper than that. I start to have a problem when immigrants can't speak our language after a period of time. Surely it must hamper other kids' education for example?
Haydos Posted 17 March 2014 Posted 17 March 2014 I refuse to call it by that name. When I played there as a lad in the early fifties, it was Ayleston Park. The country has gone bonkers, pandering to the ethnics, especially Mandella who had blood on his hands, in his earlier life. Scumbag! I don't need any history lessons, either. Why do you dislike people that don't share your skin colour or who are attracted to people of the same gender? It's crazy, are you scared of them or what? I just don't get it.
Zingari Posted 17 March 2014 Posted 17 March 2014 Anyone see the Space Programme yday live from ISS? The way the astronaughts spoke about looking at the earth from 250,000 miles away. It has no borders You cant see different colours of humans. you realise just how fickle it all is.....mind you i hate Brummies!! The ISS is only about 250 miles away in low earth orbit isn't it , 250,000 is about as far as the moon . I don't like Geordies much , except Cheryl Cole of course .
The Year Of The Fox Posted 17 March 2014 Posted 17 March 2014 The food immigrants bring over is the greatest thing about it all. Nothing brings people together better than a good bit of nosh. We should do more community food festivals, give people a good chance to get out and meet people from all cultures and share a common love. I love a good nosh. Its been a while though
Finnegan Posted 17 March 2014 Posted 17 March 2014 Finners my point is, it is great to have small sections of other cultures merge into our own, but why do we need ~50% of the City being foreign to achieve that? We can import whatever we like without having to import people from the source country. There are some parts of other cultures that are negative and damaging to Britain as well. You don't "need" it, no. I'm just waiting for someone to tell me what's the damage or risk is, culturally. I accept the arguments about over-crowding the labour market with skill-less labour, I get that, that's fine. I understand the arguments about taking on perceived lower-classes of another nation (although I'm not saying I agree with it) and the risk of the criminal element that comes with it, I think it's over-stated hyperbole but I get where Moose is coming from. What I don't understand is when people start talking about culture in the broader sense as if we're going to lose any sort of "Britishness." What's intrinsically British that we're on the verge of losing, exactly? The national character seems to be, to me, much the same as it always has been. We're a bit crude, though not completely uninhibited, we're dry, cynical, fairly pessimistic but ultimately fairly rugged people. Our holiday resorts are the same as they've always been, our hobbies and interests are the same as they've always been (football and shit TV), our diet is either largely the same or generally improving - and certainly becoming more diverse, without losing anything (alright you can now get a tidy curry but there's no shortage of village pubs dishing out good old English nosh.) What's vanished that was so special in any cultural sense? Shit comedians can't tell predictable racist jokes on the TV anymore? That's probably about it. I'm sure it still happens in the right Con Clubs / WMCs if that's your thing.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 17 March 2014 Posted 17 March 2014 Nothing better than a Sunday roast or English breakfast. Not a fan of foreign food, and I'm probably in the minority with that. "Lets go for an Indian", "lets go for a Chinese" ... NO! I can't really stand Indian food. Not the next morning anyway. I don't mind a chinky every week

Finnegan Posted 17 March 2014 Posted 17 March 2014 Ps: anyone that doesn't like "Chinese food" has probably not given it much of a chance. It's so ridiculously diverse there's got to be something for everyone.
Webbo Posted 17 March 2014 Posted 17 March 2014 Ps: anyone that doesn't like "Chinese food" has probably not given it much of a chance. It's so ridiculously diverse there's got to be something for everyone. Compared to Indian food I find it a bit bland. I have a Chinese takeaway once about every 3 months because my daughters like it, doesn't do a lot for me.

Jon25747 Posted 17 March 2014 Posted 17 March 2014 English food is great. Mind you someone will probably chime in and say what we eat now isn't the same as the druids ate so it isn't really English. Thanks for the cue... Hypothetically then, Where do you draw the line of 'Things between these dates are English'
Finnaldo Posted 17 March 2014 Posted 17 March 2014 This is the Ginza, Tokyo in the 1930's looks pretty Western to me. It does indeed. Didn't get that totally correct, but it was Westernisation brought in around 1868+ after the Meji Restoration. If you've ever seen The Last Samurai, that explains the situation pretty well. In fact it's because Japan had came into Western influence so late they had to make radical changes and drastically speed up their economy that eventually led up to their inclusion and WW2, but either way Western influence has had a pretty radical influence over the East.
Alf Bentley Posted 17 March 2014 Posted 17 March 2014 There were 2 nationality/ethnic origin questions in the 2011 census: - How would you describe your national identity? (tick all that apply) - What is your ethnic group? (tick one box to best describe your ethnic group or background) The tedious bores in the video completely ignore Leicester's responses to the "national identity" question, opting only to use responses to the ethnic group question. I wonder why..... Here are the stats for Leicester: - Total population: 330k - Ethnic group: "White British" 149k (45%), "Indian" 93k (28%), all other ethnic groups 4% or less - National identity: "British" 273k (82.7%), "non-British only" 56k (17.2%), "non-British" & "British" 4k (1.2%) http://www.ethnicity.ac.uk/census/869_CCSR_Bulletin_Does_Britain_have_plural_cities_v7.pdf So, these dullards choose to ignore the fact that 82.7% of our citizens see themselves as at least partly British. Instead they concentrate on ethnic group (where you had to choose one option). These morons believe that you cannot become British through naturalisation or assimilation over generations - you have to be ethnically "White British" to be British (or "English", as they prefer). That says everything you need to know about them! I find it encouraging, but not surprising, that 82.7% of people in Leicester see themselves as British, when many have a different ethnic origin (like me - I ticked "Irish" for ethnic origin as most of my family is Irish, even though I was born here and am British). So, how far back do you have to be "ethnically White British"? Presumably, the likes of Michael Portillo, Ed Miliband, Frank Bruno & Monty Panesar are not British in their eyes. What about the Royal Family? They only arrived from Germany a couple of hundred years ago, didn't they? Maybe I could demand that everyone descended from the Anglo-Saxons & Jutes should be sent back to Germany and Denmark, as those immigrants forced my Celtic ancestors off to Ireland a thousand years ago? Then again, one of my grandparental lines is of Norman descent, so maybe my right leg would have to be repatriated to France?! Don't experts reckon that the first humans descended from the trees in what is now Congo, so maybe the entire population of the globe should be sent back to Congo? Nah! There are serious issues around immigration (how many how quickly? from where? policies to address housing, pay rates, cultural assimilation etc.)....but insisting that only people of (undefined) "white British ethnic origin" can ever be "English" is NOT the way forward!! Racial/cultural segregation is not good, but multiculturalism with inter-culturalism is great. The fact that 82.7% of Leicester's population self-define as British suggests this is going fairly well, some problems notwithstanding. By the way, anyone else think that a lot more Asians have been coming to LCFC home matches in recent weeks? Fair-weather fans!! Not serious - a good sign, I reckon!
MrsJohnMurphy Posted 17 March 2014 Posted 17 March 2014 I live on a council estate. The house next door is for sale I'm hoping that a Polish (or other immigrant) family moves in rather than it being bought by a landlord to let out to an English family on benefits.

Not serious - a good sign, I reckon! Yep. I have a number of British Asian friends who attend regularly. Good for the club (yay!) in terms of ticket revenues and it shows that British Asians are integrating well with society. Very pleasing trend.

Rincewind Posted 17 March 2014 Posted 17 March 2014 I was unable to access FT earlier. Thought it might because of this thread. It has deteriorated into the usual standard whenever them and us subject emerges.
Voll Blau Posted 18 March 2014 Posted 18 March 2014 I have no problem consuming products from abroad, wearing clothes from abroad, having a foreign car etc. To have all of those things we don't need to have multiculturalism! Not yet really, but what about in the future when English people in Leicester gets so low that pubs/bars etc can't stay open? If that ever happens I'll kick off. But it won't, so I won't. Stop being such a hysterical moron.
