Craig Gardner

I've always liked Gardner and he would be a tidy addition to the squad on a free transfer. Has fallen out of favour under Poyet at Sunderland, with two of Poyet's boys (Scocco and Bridcutt) being favoured it seems. Could also cover well at right back.

Just been reading on wikipedia he was playing at Right Back last season, maybe I do his defensive abilities a disservice, I just remember some horror tackles for red cards, but I still think we would be too lightweight in the middle with Gardner and one of James or Drinkwater, and apart from his goal threat I would prefer James and Drinky.

I'm glad you spotted that because I was about to be all over it like a bee on some honey!

Interesting reading, but considering they are slagging off all their midfielders, including Larsson, Colback, Cattermole, who have all been good players for Sunderland in the past, suggests the problem is with the club not the individual players. I think all of them would do a job at another prem club, there is clearly something rotten in Sunderland, whether it is Poyet or a hangover from Di Canio, or something else.

Last season there were many slating Drinkwater and James, but the issue was a collective one, not an individual one, and we have seen what they can do in the right environment, so I'm not going to be put off by their fan comments.

Larsson was being linked back to Arsenal and to some other big teams a few years ago so its got to be a collective issue. Him and Gardner are very good prem midfielders when on form.

I've been down Sunderland a few times over the last 3 years and he's toss. Rated him at Birmingham but since he's been there he's been garbage. Will put the ball out of play frequently.

We had him at Villa and I thought he was a good player and was sad to see him go, good thing about Craig is he can play in many positions across the field. I remember a few times he filled in at right back, he kinda did okay. The only problem would be if he we signed Craig then we'd probably have to offload either King or Hammond. There's no point in having six centre midfielders including Danns though he's likely to be leaving in the summer, One thing I like about Craig is he's certainly got some pace and some power in his foot. So a yes for me

You can't refer to Villa as "we" and Leicester, make your mind up boy!

Views on him don't look good.

Still think Steve Sidwell is one of our best shouts, he is out of contract as well.

We can get better than Sidwell. Hull were able to sign Huddlestone and we are 10 times bigger than Hull. I'd try and sign someone like Jack Rodwell, or Gylfi Sigurdsson.

We are a bigger club than Hull but Rodwell and Sigurdsson!? lol

I think we'll need to play with 3 in the middle a lot next season, definitely away from home.

You make me sick.

Surely a name change to villapool would suit.

Interest remains, us and WBA to fight it out to secure his signature.

Meanwhile, Craig Gardner has been informed that he will not be receiving a new contract with the Black Cats.

Gardner, whose current deal expires next month, has not started a Premier League game since early December and is expected to return to his native Midlands, with West Brom and newly-promoted Leicester City both interested in acquiring his services.

I think we can do better than Gardner. Apart from a good shot, he offers little else. No better than what we have already IMO.

Hamer, Jones, Gardner... Not many pound notes being spent.

Starting to wonder if we've been told a few porkie pies and we might miss FFP and end up with a big fine.... Massive jump to that thought obviously ha.

As we've let Whitbread and St Ledger go, I see people like Gardner, Jones and maybe Hamer just adding to the squad numbers and would therefore would be very useful additions, particularly Jones and Gardner who have some Prem experience.. As they are all free, the key marquis signings is where the cash will be spent IMO

If Sunderland have released for not being what they need how can he be good enough to fit into our side... How many relegation medals the guy has worries me! Aim higher Pearson...

No thanks. Not creative enough and tackles worse than Scholes. Only really good for the odd goal from distance and pens, if we wanted a player who only had those qualities we'll just play Gally!
